I don't think there has ever been an official game day thread for a non-football game. Even with the Whitecaps USL championship game last year, I simply used the Whitecaps season thread. But with the 2007 Whitecaps USL season over and with all the attention tonight's game has been getting, I thought I might was well create this thread just to discuss this game.
The local newspapers have produced so many articles and pictures about Beckham's arrival and today's game. Here are just a sample of them.

I gotta say, I'm more and more impressed with Beckham as a person, the more I hear about him. He's very big on using his celebrity status to benefit other people. He doesn't lug around a bunch of bodyguards or a big entourage, but always travels with the team and hangs out with them in the off-hours. They were saying yesterday, if a fan brings him something to be signed, it has to be signed by the whole team.
In other words, he doesn't seem to be one of those "superstar" athletes that basks in, believes, or even reads his own press.
Doesn't make me any more interested in watching soccer, but it's certainly refreshing given the types of stories that are normally in the news about big-name athletes, and more power to him.

He has to use his celebrity status, as his game is pretty much relegated to that of a free kick specialist. That being said, he certainly came across as you suggest in yesterdays presser, very sincere and caring of the game itself.Soundy wrote:I gotta say, I'm more and more impressed with Beckham as a person, the more I hear about him. Entertainment value = an all time low
The guy is a team guy and a class act you can say what you want about his skills but he never wants his team mates excluded from the lime light and charity work he is doing for sick kids is I believe he is visiting a terminaly ill little girl today here in Vancouver.

Sick girl meets Beckham
Siobhan Bostock, 8, suffers from Marfan syndrome
Cheryl Chan
The Province
Wednesday, November 07, 2007
David Beckham made a local girl's wish come true.
"I'm very excited, so excited," eight-year old Siobhan Bostock said from her East Vancouver home yesterday, a few hours before she met her soccer hero at a private meet-and-greet at B.C. Place Stadium.
"I have a bad back and can't play soccer . . . but I like him because he has great soccer skills," said Siobhan, who had prepared a poster and a card for the L.A. Galaxy midfielder who's in town for tonight's exhibition game against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Siobhan, a Nootka Elementary third-grader who is "head over heels" for the handsome English soccer star, suffers from Marfan syndrome, a connective-tissue disorder in which her ligaments are too weak to support her body.
The progressive disease affects her heart and vision and causes her spine to curve, pressing down on her lungs and heart.
Two titanium rods, attached from the ribs to the bottom of her spine, were inserted in Siobhan's back two years ago to help hold her up.
When treated properly, Marfan's isn't life-threatening but requires surgery every six months to extend the rods as the patient grows.
Because of her condition, Siobhan cannot play any contact sport, although she occasionally kicks a ball around with her brother Rowan, 10.
Her love for the game was inherited from her soccer-mad family: Rowan plays in a community league that dad Andrew, originally from Manchester, coaches.
Mom Jacki admits to being "brainwashed" after more than a decade of Manchester United fanaticism. Even dog Chester is named after the family's favourite team.
When their wish to meet Beckham was granted Friday afternoon by the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation, "the children were running around the house with their shirts over their heads screaming," said Jacki.
Siobhan, who has already undergone five painful operations and is scheduled for a sixth on Dec. 20, struggles with "a lot of anxiety" before and after each operation, said her mom. "It's hard to watch."
Her mom called meeting Beckham a "phenomenal" experience for her daughter. "I think it's really going to show her that everyone thinks she's a brave little girl and she can take these memories with her." At a packed news conference at the Pan Pacific Hotel yesterday, a tanned and relaxed-looking Beckham said he planned to give one of his two game jerseys to Siobhan.
"I think it's great to be in a position to help people. People talk about the financial side . . . [and] the celebrity side, but there's nothing better than being able to make a difference," he said.
It is the 32-year-old soccer superstar's first visit to Vancouver -- but not his last. Round 2 of Beckhamania is slated for early December when he returns to the city with pop-star wife Victoria -- a.k.a. Posh Spice -- for the launch of the Spice Girls' reunion concert tour.

Well this has always been my knock on the whole "Beckhamania" thing - he's really not THAT GREAT a soccer player (certainly not to the level of a Ronaldo or a Pele), yet has somehow attained this cult status (due in some part, of course, to marrying Posh Spice).Rammer wrote:He has to use his celebrity status, as his game is pretty much relegated to that of a free kick specialist.Soundy wrote:I gotta say, I'm more and more impressed with Beckham as a person, the more I hear about him. That seems to be the consensus for most everyone who's met him and dealt with him. Largely a victim of having greatness thrust upon him, as it were. That being said, he certainly came across as you suggest in yesterdays presser, very sincere and caring of the game itself.
Not suggesting that he doesn't enjoy superstar status, but he doesn't seem to have let it go to his head.

2012 Season Ticket Holder
I think this Soccer game is slowing down ticket sales for the WF big time.,
I think the lions better open up some more sections after this game tonight, or they are going to be in trouble and will lose more momentum on sales, i think it is going to take a couple of days before everybody gets over Beckham.

Well I agree, the Lions are making a big mistake waiting for every single seat in the nosebleeds to sell first before opening the Endzones.
If they had've opened the end zones earlier they could be flirting with 45,000 by now. But no, they have to sell every single nosebleed first.
Smart strategy by Bob Lenarduzzi to get this Beckham game in before the Lions WF.
One wonders who's got better marketing ideas here, Lenarduzzi or Ackles.
Right now I'd have to say Lenarduzzi as he's got the city talking soccer. Give the cake to Lenarduzzi.

I don't really follow soccer, but I must say I was impressed by what I saw of Becks at the press conference yesterday. It seems he's well aware that he is the big draw for a game like this, whether he "deserves" to be (talent-wise) or not. And he seems very willing to do whatever his team asks him to do, publicity-wise. Seems like a good guy.
Another ill-informed, knee-jerk post.120dB wrote:One wonders who's got better marketing ideas here, Lenarduzzi or Ackles.

The West Final is still a week and a half away; the soccer game is tonight. Of course the city is talking soccer. But a week and a half ago, this game had as much buzz a Toyota Tercel at the Detroit Auto Show. It's only since Beckham arrived in town that there's been a media frenzy. Nothing to do with Lenarduzzi, or Ackles for that matter.
A week from now everyone will be getting amped up for the Leos and whomever their opponent will be.

chimpy where are you sitting at tonight and are you bringing a sign?
Is anyone televising this? It's been over 10 years since I last saw a tv broadcast of a BC Place event. I don't see it in TSN's or SPac's listings.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
Yeah, that must be channel 327 of a 500-pack I don't have.120dB wrote:GOLTV (Goal TV)
