....as per Mike Petrie of the Calgary Herald....

Here's our shortlist of people who failed to fulfill their responsibilities in 2007:

Heads were scratched when Montreal GM Jim Popp appointed Jim Popp as head coach. This has been a colossal bust and his team is in disarray.

Hamilton QB Jason Maas was handed his own team and proceeded to drop it on its head. Many believed he would thrive with the Ticats -- including yours truly -- but the experiment ended when Maas was shipped to Montreal.

Winnipeg K/P Troy Westwood has been slipping for a few years and hit rock bottom this season. The value of a kicker can't be overstated, and Westwood's inconsistency has contributed to them adding an import kicker.

Toronto SB Marc Boerigter was handed a starting job by Calgary out of camp and handed it right back. He was cut, landed in Toronto and hasn't done anything to reaffirm his status as a gamebreaker.

Despite his chest thumping and lofty claims from the Argos, QB Mike McMahon turned out to be a total bust -- on the field and in the locker-room.

I would add Akili Smith to the list, along with John Avery once again

I agree, although the NY Rangers might not.

Nah, there's a whole other forum section devoted to that; I thought it might be a list of CFLer arrests this season, but it's been a quiet year for transgressors, actually. Can't think of any offhand.

Would it be fair to call Tony Simmons a bust, in the sense of the OP?
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
