It looks like for his MVP award, all Gjertsen received was a small plaque.

Although no mention was ever made of him, I think it's appropriate if the Whitecaps dedicate their win to this man.

Robbie wrote:I noticed that notwithstanding Olympic events, soccer seems to be the only league sport that gives the winning (and runner-ups too) individuals medals in addition to the championship trophy.
I found these three pictures that I will post because they answered two questions that I was curious about.

The first picture shows a closeup of the championship trophy. The picture clearly shows the words at the base of the trophy that indicate the location and date of the championship game. I was wondering what it said. Doesn't the top USL championship trophy resemble the Grey Cup with the large cup at the two handles on the side?

The second picture shows a closeup of the medals that were awarded to the individuals. I was curious to see what the inscriptions on the medals were. Now, I know it reads "FIRST DIVISION USL 2006 Champions".

Video highlights of the championship game, which shows all three Whitecaps goals, can be seen here.

I think Tony Donatelli and Sita-Taty Matondo scored spectacular goals in their one-to-one play against Rochester goaltender Scott Vallow. They cleverly maneuvered the ball past him.

Well, Canucks notwithstanding, it's been a pretty good year for BC sports and sports figures: the Lions are having a kick-ass season so far, the Giants steamrolled their way to a WHL champioship, the male AND female Whitecaps both took their respective championships, Steve Nash has racked up some unprecedented honors in the NBA... it's a great time to be a sports fan in BC!

We are the Champions

Congrats. to the Whitecaps!!

This year they got hot during the playoffs and could do know wrong.
Bummer I couldn't make it to the airport to cheer the team.

Let's do it again next year.

I believe that the USL championship trophy is for keeps. In other words, the Whitecaps can permanently keep their championship trophy and a new one is issued every year - just like the NFL Super Bowl Vince Lombardi trophy and the NBA and MLB championship trophies. That is unlike the Stanley Cup and Grey Cup, which must eventually be returned to the league by the winning team.

I know that the Whitecaps 1979 Soccer Bowl trophy was kept permanently by the team. It is on display at the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Still a BC team, isn't it? Three-quarters of the WHL aren't.

Hey! What about those Millionaires?
Sure they're 1-7 and play in that old barn on Barlow but you gotta give props to the home town team. :rockin:

So did any of you show up for the Whitecaps celebration gathering yesterday morning in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery?

Congratulations to Martin Nash for being selected to the Canadian national team.
