BC RUN GAME:
Great insights Blitz on the offense, etc.

Not to quarrel with Blitz's perspectives other than to suggest how tough it must be for BC's O-line given lack of running play calls which gives the edge to the DEF before the snap of the ball.

BETTS ON TSN

In-depth with Mathieu Betts and featuring David Menard and Coach John Bowman a former Al :

Mathieu Betts: The Quarterback Nightmare
It's been a special season for BC Lions defensive lineman Mathieu Betts. CFL sack champion, the single-season record for most sacks by a Canadian, and now, West nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Mild-mannered off the field, the Montreal native transforms once he straps on his helmet. Here's more on Betts, his breakthrough year and the CFL legend who has helped push him to new heights.

I have felt all season that Lions rookie D Line coach, John Bowman, has been living vicariously through DE Mathieu Betts. So, in a way it is not a surprise that Betts had an all star season since he was being coach by one of the best all time DE.

Lots of great insights on what the team needs to do to secure a win.

I would like to see the pass defence get up tight in man-to-man - the zone looks too loose. Corners could get tighter on the wideouts and the safeties stand their ground more. It seems they play miles off the ball and turn and run away from the line of scrimmage as soon as the ball is hiked - leaving tons of space for easy crossing patterns and the safeties being so far off, come up late to help stiff the run. I would like to see more blitzing, especially the run blitz. Don't let the quarterback or the running backs have time to think. Perhaps have Varga play a fourth linebacker?

What would help are the two things simple things that have already been mentioned: no after the whistle or stupid penalties - they kill us. Play with professionalism and discipline and not like rookie middle school kids. Second: take care of the ball - win the takeaway battle = win the game.

Unlike other areas of our play - special teams seem to have improved as the season went along. The kicking game is solid and the return game is much improved - especially when they let Williams explore the sideline moves rather than being funnelled into the 5 yards and a cloud of Astroturf meat grinder up the middle most of the time. Like the play of their cover teams lately.

If we are getting stuffed in the run, perhaps having a fullback such as Mackie lead the way. What!!! Play a fullback!!! Why not give it a solid try - the usual running game just doesn't cut it. If you want to take the pressure off the QB why not use Cottoy as a check-down if things get too hot in the pocket: either Adams passes to him or rolls out to Cottoy's side and lets him either lead block or slip behind for a reception. Cottoy is so underutilized it makes me scream at the TV screen. Use him in run blocking - he can set the edge with that big frame. Could you imagine what Kansas City or San Francisco would be like if their QBs ignored Kelce and Kittle the way we ignore the monster potential Cottoy presents?

Let's not look to the Final with the Peg - focus on the next game: Calgary. If we bring our 'A' game it is not close.

Lions received a lot of motivation today. I see in a Facebook post that Amar Doman surprised the players today giving each player a custom pair of orange & white Nike sneakers adorned with the BC monogram logo in a few places and the player's number on the lower right side of the heel. Hopefully Doman gets rewarded for his generosity.

Jim Barker on today's playoff matchups and at the end his take on MOP and his detailed response to hiring coaches when the topic of Khari Jones' replacement came up.

Lions - Calgary Game review half way in.

Takeaways:

"Intriguing" game
* Calg not a great match up for BC given the beatdown 41-16
* Calgary physicality vs BC Offensive Line is key.
Mizzell has to be used to keep the LBs engaged
* Invoked Dick Vermeil the Greatest Show on Turf with big play VA.
