After being demolished in Baltimore last week, the Seahawks look to rebound against the Washington Commanders. Things looked bad when the Seahawks defence allowed a long TD pass shortly after kickoff, and then allowed two more TD's late in the fourth quarter to allow the Commanders to tie the game twice. Fortunately with 52-seconds left Geno Smith managed to get the offence to field goal range to allow Jason Myers to make a 43-yard game winning field goal, the fifth of his game and going 5 out of 5.

While Geno Smith completed 31-47 for 369 yards, 2 TD's, and no interceptions, he did miss several open receivers. Had the Seahawks lost this game, then I wouldn't be surprised if Pete Carroll would start Drew Lock in the next game.

Another nail-biter when the Seahawks should have won easily against an inferior team who just traded away two of their better defensive linemen. Geno Smith wasn't great (although he was much better in the 2nd half), despite the late-game completions that set up the walk-off field goal for the win. His QB rating now stands at 89.2 for the season so far (compared, for instance, to Russell Wilson's 101.7) placing him 19th among all NFL QBs. At this point, Smith is clearly a part of the reason the offense hasn't lived up to expectations. I don't know about Drew Lock, but I think we can expect the Seahawks to look hard for a QB in the 2024 draft.

Here's a brief article, however, that puts Smith in a much more positive light:

https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1769164/ ... arroll-qb/

The Seahawks currently stand at 6-3, which might be good enough to eventually make the playoffs, but a string of very tough games awaits them, and I don't really see a strong finish for this team. They have many of the necessary pieces to be a very good team, but their inconsistent and underwhelming performance so far is alarming. There have been a few bright spots, such as the play of rookie CB Devon Witherspoon (who has been sensational) and 2nd-year edge rusher Boye Mafe and, at least yesterday, of rookie RB Zach Charbonnet, but the team just hasn't seemed to have found its identity and is underperforming.

Last night's Monday Night Football between Denver at Buffalo ended with a repeat of the 2009 Grey Cup game. The Broncos prepared for a game winning field goal and missed, but the Bills had 12 men on defence and gave the Broncos got a second chance which they capitalized to win the game and Russell Wilson was back to his usual form of his great scrambling abilities and completing important passes.

Revisiting the issue of clock management between the CFL vs. NFL, another huge difference which you won't seen in the CFL but would see in the NFL during desperation time is seeing the offence scrambling to scrimmage before time runs out. In the CFL, since a clock is stopped after every play after the 3-minute warning and a play can be snapped with 0 on the clock there's no scrambling necessary to try to get one last play in.

But in the NFL, no time can be snapped with 0 time on the clock other than cases in which there's a defensive penalty. And when a team on offence has no time outs and made a completion in-bounds, then there's so much desperation to line up and try to stop the clock - usually in the form of a QB spike but in the case of MNF, running an actual play which was the first attempted FG try and this involves getting the placekicker, holder, and long snapper into the game all the while getting the appropriate players out to ensure there are 11 on the field. And last, the desperation play actually confused the Bills defence as they ended up with 12 men on the field. I do respect the NFL officials especially the umpire or back judge who is responsible for placing the ball in the correct line of scrimmage as fast as possible to help the desperate offence but there are still some cases in which the umpire took too long resulting in the clock going to 0 before another play was run.

And the Commanders vs. Seahawks game had a somewhat similar ending in that after a long pass from Geno Smith to DK Metcalf with 16 seconds left and running with no timeouts the Seahawks offence had to scramble big time to get to the line of scrimmage and the Back Judge helped the Seahawks by working quickly to put the ball in its correct location with the help from the cooperating Metcalf who wisely gave the ball to the Back Judge for him to do his job instead of leaving the ball down or throwing it away which would have wasted several precious seconds. Russell Wilson also wisely gave the ball to an official when he kneeled without any time outs on a fourth down. Videos from both games.

Despite leading most of the game, the Seahawks were unable to avenge their season opener loss to the Rams with another loss mostly because of undisciplined penalties by the defence to allow the Rams offence to extend their drives leading to the final game-winning FG.

We now know why Drew Lock is relegated as a backup with his several incompletions and interception when he was forced to play in the fourth quarter after Geno Smith got injured.

That was a bad loss. The Seahawks are now 6-4 and in serious danger of missing the playoffs. Had they won and gone to 7-3, I believe the odds of making the playoffs would have been quite high. But now, the picture looks much worse. They have just a brutal string of games coming up—the 49ers twice, the Cowboys, and Eagles. They’ll need to get to 9-8 at least, and that will not be easy. In addition, Geno Smith injured his right elbow, and his availability for this Thursday’s game against the 49ers is in some doubt, although Pete Carroll seems think that Geno will be able to play. Lead RB Kenneth Walker also came out injured and is questionable for Thursday.

Seahawks suffer their fourth straight loss just when a month ago they were in first in the NFC West. Might as well say goodbye to the season by now.

Valient effort by Drew Lock in his very first start after the Russell Wilson trade by fighting back for a 10-7 lead after the Seattle secondary allowed a terrible play from scrimmage. But it was not enough as Lock could only manage one more TD in the second half while the defence allowed two more TD's to seal the loss.

If Geno Smith recovers next week, he will likely reclaim his starting job.

For all their offensive woes, the Hawks bigger challenges are on Defense. Their secondary isn't particularly suffocating but even more problematic IMO is their front 4 on DLine. They don't have the horses there to put any sustained pressure on opposing QB's. Too often the other team has all day back there to pick apart the rest of the D.

Yes, I agree, Sir Purrcival. One part of their defense that has greatly underperformed this season has been their safety group. Jamal Adams has not had anywhere near the kind of season that was expected, and free safety Quandre Diggs seems to have lost his speed and ball-hawking effectiveness. In addition, their newest safety, Julian Love, obtained in free agency from the Giants, has also been mediocre. I think that the corners--especially Devon Witherspoon--have been OK, but as you say, the front 7 have failed to get much pressure on opposing QBs. At this point in the season, I'm beginning to see the team's flaws as more scheme-related and the fault of the two coordinators--especially DC Clint Hurtt--than the quality of the players. We'll see whether they can pick up a few wins once this brutal span of games (49ers twice, Eagles, Cowboys) has ended.

Finally, the Seahawks break their four game losing streak by upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles. Certainly not an easy win with the careless defence allowing the Eagles to take 10-0 and 17-10 leads. But the defence rose to occasion in the fourth quarter by a pick and then by forcing the Eagles to punt when the game was on the line and another first down would have given them the win and the second interception in the end sealed the deal.

Drew Lock managed to pull off the game-winning drive. If Geno Smith has recovered by next week, then it's important decision time on who starts. Seahawks will be on the road for 2 of their 3 final games and they need to win all of them if they want to make the playoffs and fortunately they are against weaker teams - Tennessee and Arizona on the road and home against Pittsburgh.

I liked this Sean Payton comment following their last game:
‘They are a good CFL team’: Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton compliments Detroit Lions’ 1st and 2nd down efficiency
By Justin Dunk -December 17, 2023
Denver Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton was getting flashbacks to his time in the Canadian Football League during Saturday night’s 42-17 loss to the Detroit Lions.

The 59-year-old bench boss marvelled at his opponent’s early down efficiency and delivered a compliment of the highest order.

“First and second down, they are a good CFL team,” Payton said. “Most of your top offences are real good on those first two downs so it’s hard to get them to third down. They had quite a bit of chunk plays. Listen, it’s a good offence and we struggled with it.”

That was just an incredible game last night wasn’t it, with the Seahawks pulling out the win on what has to be seen as a spectacular 92-yard drive with under 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was Drew Lock's finest moment and demonstrated the offensive strength of the Seahawks with DK Metcalf and outstanding rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba (along with Tyler Lockett) showing that they are one of the best 3-receiver tandems in the NFL. In addition, 2nd-year RB Kenneth Walker was dynamic, picking up 86 yards on 19 carries against what is generally regarded as one of the best defenses in the league.

I thought Pete Carroll had the defense ready for this game, and they played well, holding a top team like the Eagles to just 321 total yards and 17 points. They were shorthanded in the secondary with both star rookie Devon Witherspoon and all-pro Jamal Adams out, but managed to hold the Eagles to just 143 passing yards. The backup corners played pretty well, especially Michael Jackson, and the two safeties, Quandre Diggs and Julian Love, were strong, particularly Love who had a huge game with his two interceptions, including the one that ended the game. Up front, Leonard Williams was outstanding. He has been a great mid-season acquisition for the 'Hawks and has put some steel into the D-line. I hope they can keep him in 2024.

The 'Hawks now sit at 7-7 with three games left. If they run the table and end up 10-7, they'll very likely make the playoffs (a prospect seen as extremely remote before last night's game). The odds-makers now give the Seahawks a 46% chance of making the playoffs, so not terribly different from the odds they were given before the season began, 54.95%. If they win 2 of the 3, they'll be at 9-8 and could possibly still make the post-season, although that’s very dicey. So we’ll have to see what this win produces for the Seahawks going forward, both physically and mentally. We can hope Witherspoon and Adams will be back for the Titans game and that the team will have been energized and lifted by this win to go on a 3-game winning streak. If any coach can get his troops energized, it would have to be Pete Carroll. None of the three teams left on their schedule has a winning record, and so the opportunity is there for them, starting on Christmas Eve in Nashville.

When it comes to trades especially players on the same position, after a period of time one can get a general idea of which fans would lament more on the loss of the traded player. As a great example, while not a trade per se in 1992 Lions fans miss Doug Flutie a heck of a lot more than Stampeders fans missing Danny Barrett.

According to recent media:
https://sports.yahoo.com/broncos-fans-r ... p_catchall

It looks like Broncos fans really miss Drew Lock simply because of his great play in the last game and some went as far as saying Drew Lock is better than Russell Wilson. To be honest, I'm a little surprised about that given the fact that Drew Lock didn't even win the starting job upon his arrival in Seattle, while no doubt Russell Wilson was the starter for the Broncos. And was Drew Lock a huge superstar in Denver who won many games? No.

I guess it's because Broncos fans simply had too high expectations with Russell Wilson and as such, they are taking it out on him by claiming that Drew Lock would have done much better had he stayed team. But Drew Lock's performance last week was just one game and there's not enough consistency yet especially since he didn't do all that well two weeks ago when he started, and it still remains to be seen whether he will win the starting job from Geno Smith.

Yeah, Robbie, that's pretty silly talk from the Broncos' fans. Drew Lock may have had a game or two in which he was good in Denver, but, for the most part, in his three years there, he was mediocre at best. His completion percentage over those three years averaged 60.6, and his quarterback rating averaged just 81.8. Meanwhile Russell Wilson racked up QB ratings around 100 over the same period.

I don't think there's any chance Lock will win the starting job from Geno Smith unless Smith is injured again. Smith, at this point, is a demonstrably better QB. And to complete the picture, Russell Wilson is a clearly better QB than Smith. Pete Carroll has been enthusiastic about Lock from the beginning and continues to think highly of him. I think that Pete has been impressed with Lock's physical attributes. He is 6-4, 228 lbs., has good speed for a big man, and is very strong with a rocket-launcher for an arm. He is probably more athletic than Smith and can make yards with his feet. The problem with Lock all along has been his poor decision-making and tendency to throw some bad balls. I think Pete's hope from the beginning has been that Lock will mature as a backup to Smith and learn the nuances of the game, developing eventually into a legitimate starting QB. This remains to be seen.

Another come-from-behind win by the Seahawks in Tennessee to keep their playoff hopes alive. Pete Carroll opted for Geno Smith after his recovery, but after a slow start I was wondering if he would be replaced with Drew Lock at halftime. But in this case, Carroll stuck with Geno Smith who had a strong second half with two fourth quarter touchdown passes including the game-winning TD drive consisting a couple of 3rd down and long conversions late in the fourth quarter.

With help from the Detroit Lions clinging on to a small win over the Minnesota Vikings, the Seahawks have regained a Wildcard spot.

On Christmas Day, it will be a good match between the two conference leaders Baltimore vs. San Francisco with both of them having 11-3 records.

Next week will be a rematch of Super Bowl XL when the Pittsburgh Steelers go to Seattle with both teams with 8-7 records.

-----------------

Continuing on with the occasional CFL vs. NFL rules, this is one area which I like the CFL much better after a new rule change in the NFL in 2023 with regards to kickoffs. In the NFL, the receiver can signal for a fair catch for kickoffs anywhere between their own goal line to the 25 yard line, and automatically get the ball at the 25 yard line just like a typical touchback had the ball gone through the end zone or conceeded in the end zone. This play was observed several times by the Titans at the Seattle vs. Tennessee game. As a reward, the kickoff team is not rewarded by a strategically kicked kickoff that lands between 0 to 10 yard line in hopes of pinning them deep like a typical good punt.

The CFL rewards good kickoffs by forcing them to return from deep in their end or concede a rouge.

As usual, the Seahawks made life miserable for their fans, once again waiting until the last seconds to pull out a victory. It hasn't been a pleasant experience watching the 'Hawks this season, and I'd like to see just one game in which we could relax early on in the game and actually enjoy it!

But I guess a win is a win, and this one against the Titans puts the Seahawks at 8-7 now and in pretty good position to make the playoffs. The oddsmakers now have the 'Hawks at 68% to make it to the postseason. With the Vikings' loss, if the Seahawks win their two remaining games (Pittsburgh in Seattle and Arizona in the desert), they're in. I think the Steelers game at home will be a tough one for the 'Hawks, and Pete Carroll will have to work hard on getting his guys up for it. If they lose to the Steelers, they can still make the playoffs with a win in Arizona, but a lot of other things will have to happen.

I thought Geno Smith had a pretty good game, particularly in the second half, and he'll have to be really on against the Steelers, who are in desperate straits vis-a-vis making the playoffs in the AFC. I'm hoping that they'll get Devon Witherspoon back at nickel corner for the last two games. They missed his drive and energy out there today, and his replacements, Coby Bryant and Artie Burns, were not effective.

So, an interesting end to the regular season coming up....
