All Teams To Be Represented at the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards

Hometown Alouettes lead the way with three finalists




Toronto, ON (November 4, 2008) - Every team will be represented at the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards in Montreal with the hometown Alouettes leading the way with three finalists, the Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today.

"In a season where our veteran players have had career years and our young players have emerged as bona fide stars, it makes purrfect sense that every team is represented at this year's awards show," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. "Congratulations to all of our league's finalists and their teams on an exciting year in the CFL."

Forty-one (41) voters from the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC), representing each CFL market and a national chapter, plus the CFL's head coaches were asked to select players from their local CFL division who, through on-field performance excellence, best represent the awards' title - Outstanding Player, Outstanding Canadian Player, Outstanding Defensive Player, Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Outstanding Rookie and Outstanding Special Teams Player.

The Alouettes three finalists include Anthony Calvillo for Outstanding Player, Ben Cahoon for Outstanding Canadian and Scott Flory for Outstanding Offensive Lineman.

Representing the East for Outstanding Defensive Player is Winnipeg Blue Bomber Doug Brown and for Outstanding Rookie is receiver Prechae Rodriguez from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The only unanimous selection is Toronto Argonauts kick return specialist Dominique Dorsey in the Outstanding Special Teams Player category.

In the West, Calgary and Saskatchewan are sending two players each to the awards banquet. Heading to Montreal from the Stampeders is first time Outstanding Player finalist Henry Burris and the 2006 Outstanding Special Teams Player Sandro DeAngelis. The Roughriders will be represented by the West's Outstanding Rookie Weston Dressler and two-time CFL Outstanding Offensive Lineman Gene Makowsky.

Rounding out the West nominees is the CFL's top rookie and defensive player from last season, BC Lion Cam Wake who is up for Outstanding Defensive Player, and first-time finalist Edmonton Eskimo Kamau Peterson for Outstanding Canadian.

The winners will be announced at the 2008 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards show during Grey Cup week on Thursday, November 20 at the Casino de Montreal.

Well the dream of Cam Wake winning the dual role of MOP and MODP is squashed. Can't believe that Sandro DeAngelis beat out Smart for the West representative for ST. Oh well, just one reward that the team should be focusing on now, Grey Cup.

Dominating these awards has not done us much good on the field. In my whackier moments, I actually think it contributes to the sense of entitlement that has dragged the team down.

Dorsey being the only unanimous decision is the biggest surprise to me.

Kudos for the Peterson pick Phil, I had no faith in that when PJack was selected for his 4th Cdn of the week award.....guess they don`t mean anything.

Not surprised by any of these except Special Teams. Why Ian Smart or Tristan Jackson were not named is beyond me. I'm not even sure DeAngelis was even the best kicker in the west. This one is strange to me. Regardless this doesn't matter as I see this going to Dorsey.

Burris over Wake I can live with, disappointing but I can live with it. This one also doesn't mater as Calvillo will win this one.

Kamau Peterson over Paris Jackson shouldn't be much of a surprise. He had a great season and is 3rd in receptions and add to that the one play against the Lions with the #83 under his jersey, that was hugely emotional and the kind of thing the voters love. This one goes to Peterson over Cahoon in my mind.

A little surprised by Gene Makowsky but considering what he had to do this year by switching positions he was the best in the west. Again I see this award being handed out to the east.

For Rookie this is Dresslers hands down. Had Logan played all 18 games or the Riders not had so many injuries to receivers I think Logan would have had a really good shot.

I didn't mention Defensive play because we all know this one is Cameron Wake's.

Yea, i thought that was funny too....i'd have to say that makowsky at tackle was probably his worst position. Hmmm, maybe center was. Wake destroyed him in that game. It was sad. I think calvillo wins in a walk, both due to stats and the sentimental vote. Dressler obviously wins the rookie, tho it would have been logans had he had a full season. I cant believe that cahoon was the canadian, he was mostly invisible this season. How DeAngelis beat out Smart is beyond me, set the record for kickoff return yardage in a season and Congi was a better kicker than D. Poor doug brown, 0-3. I think your other winners are, Peterson, dorsey, flory, and of course wake in the defensive award. I still belive that, at any position, cam wake is the best player in the league this season. Burris didnt do much to wow me this year, as every year.

With the year AC's having, he should win MOP and the whine from Calgary will be deafening - you'll hear it clear over the Rockies...

I too, am also puzzled over how Wake was not a unanimous decision. :no: Wow, just wow.

FWIW, I think Makowsky should get the nod - he's played out of position most of the year - his natural spot is guard but he's played tackle and center and done a respectable job at all of them.

And BTW Zarquon, of course he had to get help defending against Wake - teams have been double-teaming Wake all year - that's the only way to defend against him!
