Is this a snub?

Guess which Vancouver sports team has yet to pay tribute to Bob Ackles on their website...

Whitecaps? Nope. There is a message from Whitecaps FC.

Canadians? Wrong again. The C's have a very nice message of condolence.

Canucks? Ding-Ding-Ding! Classy. Real classy. Not.

That's a very unfair and unimportant accusation. The office staff at GM Place are not there on weekends, which means there was nobody around to issue a statement. I'm sure if this happened mid-week that they would have had one up instantly. This thread should be about remembering Bobby and sharing our own personal experiences with the man, not trying to use it as a way to further add to the disconnect between Lions fans and the Canucks. Wanna know who else didn't issue a statement today? The Vancouver Giants. Those insensitive assholes!

My point is if the Canadians and Whitecaps thought Bob Ackles was worthy of calling one of their web geeks at home over the weekend to add a quick bit of content, then why would the Canucks not have thought to do the same? We're only talking about one of the most important people in BC sports history here.

I'm in a state of disbelief... sad, sad news for the Lions, fans, the province of BC, and all of football. All I can think to say right now is Thank you, Mr. Ackles - you made an impact on so very many people, and we are very much grateful and indebted to your passion and your efforts.

Heartfelt condolences to the Ackles family - our thoughts are with you.

Well said, NOJ. As I look at it now, the Canucks' website — which, incidentally, like all of the NHL's team websites, is controlled from the league's central offices in New York — hasn't even been updated since Friday anyway (at least there haven't been any news stories added since Gillis's reaction to Naslund's departure). It's not like they've been steadily cranking out content all weekend and deliberately ignored this late-breaking development.

It seems to me that BCL surfed around to all these sites with an axe to grind, especially since he chose either to ignore or not to check on the Giants' no-show. Besides, hockey isn't in season anyway, unlike the Canadians and 'Caps. And I suppose if the Canucks went full bore on condolences this afternoon, he'd have accused them of trying to grab the spotlight away from the Lions during football season. :sigh:

Strait8 said it well: "Bobby Ackles defined class everywhere he went. His greatest legacy will be the fact he saved football here in BC. Today we heard from the CFL, tomorrow we will hear from his friends in the NFL."

You'll note that there's nothing about this on the NFL site as yet... or the Cowboys' or Dolphins' sites, or any of the other teams Bob touched. Why is that? Probably the same reason the local hockey teams haven't posted anything yet: as NOJ noted, it's the off-season, nobody's working to update the sites on the weekends.

Recognition For Bob 2

First, I apologize to anyone who was upset or offended about my post about the Canucks website not recognizing Bob Ackles passing.

I was surfing Vancouver sports teams web sites to see what sort of reaction they had made, and after listening to 4 hours of radio tributes while choking back tears, and I was too quick to take offense that the Canucks had not responded soon enough for me. I wasn't looking to steer this thread away from mourning of Bob Ackles and turn it into a Lions vs. Canucks debate.

With the benefit of a night's sleep I realize that, as other posters have pointed out, the Canucks may not be totally in control of their web content. Plus with the Canadians and Whitecaps being in mid season, perhaps they are in a better position to react more quickly. As for the Giants, I never even even considered them or looked at their website, as I simply forgot about them (there was no junior hockey in Vancouver when I j used to live there so they are not on my radar).

I wasn't trying to distort the circumstances or exploit this tragedy to make the Canucks look bad. I am a huge fan of both the Canucks and Lions. But I realize that I should not have even posted my original comments last night. Not only was I premature to condemn the Canucks, but I should have considered that any negative comments about the Canucks has the potential to spark a Lions vs. Canucks debate and this was not the time or place for that.

Again, I apologize for my original post on this matter.

No need to apologize for being correct, BCL. Don't beat yourself up, because you made an observation that happened to be true.

True or not, I realize that it was the wrong time and wrong place to make that particular observation the way I made it. I'm not beating myself up, just being man enough to admit I shouldn't have posted that comment. At least not in the condescending tone in which I presented it.

At least the Canucks message board has a thread on Ackles:

I just did a quick surf of the other 7 CFL teams website. Winnipeg and Hamilton only have a link to the CFL news wire, but all other teams have a personal message of condolence.

I thought Winnipeg had something up yesterday, but maybe I was wrong about that? I can't see why it would be down already, or maybe I missed it today?

I'm very disappointed by the Canucks lack of action to publicly offer condolences. Especially now that they have updated other information on their website. No longer can this be excused away by blaming weekend staffing or NY central control.

If you are part of the professional sports fraternity in B.C. how can you not extend your sympathy when someone like Bobby Ackles pases on? This makes the Canucks look very disconnected from the community.
