He's being waived because they cannot sign him back to their practice squad without first waiving him. The Jags had 2 options. Waive him or burn a spot on their 53 man active roster for someone who won't go onto their game roster unless Lawrence or Beathard are injured and unable to play.

I think that by waiting until the day before their game, the Jags have ensured that he is unlikely to be picked up by a team within the 24 hour waiver opening. As Hambone says, he would have to go on a team's 53 man active roster and no team would waste a spot by claiming Rourke and wasting a spot on the active roster when there is no way that Rourke would be able to suit up for today's game.

I don't see any way that Nathan Rourke will decide to give up his NFL dream and come back to the Lions next season.

Far too soon.

Also, thinking realisitically or to some maybe pesssimistically here, if Jags have just 3 QBs there is little chance they'll ever want to play Nathan Rourke this year and then risk waiving him to get him back on the PR if he did what they needed him to do if he did play - make plays so they win and get to the playoffs or make good plays and just protect the ball to save a win. If Rourke were to play and look like an NFL pro QB the reality is why would someone not try to grab him for their no. 2 QB?

Toppy, I agree with you that Nthan will not be with BC next season. If Nathan does play because both QB's are unable to play, and if he does well and comes through for the Jags, they could opt not to waive him back to PR and keep him on the 53 rather than risk losing him. That would be the smart play as it would keep him with the Jags if needed given the few games left in the season....

Jacksonville Jaguars place QB Trevor Lawrence in concussion protocol after waiving Nathan Rourke
By 3Down Staff -December 18, 2023

https://3downnation.com/2023/12/18/jack ... an-rourke/
Rourke was placed on waivers on Saturday with the intention of returning him to the team’s practice roster. According to NFL regulations, all 31 other NFL teams are given 24 hours to submit a claim for the 25-year-old before he can officially return to the Jags.

If Rourke does clear waivers for the third time this season, he could be bound back for the active roster yet again if Lawrence isn’t ready to go next week.
If the former first-overall pick can’t make the start, Rourke could be temporarily elevated from the practice roster to backup veteran C.J. Beathard, which would not expose him to waivers for a fourth time when he is eventually sent back down.

I am a retired Occupational First Aid Attendant, having worked for many years for a logging contractor. In B.C. if a logger gets a concussion and no light duty is available, then a minimum 1 week off work is mandatory even if no symptoms are present. This is done to give the brain a chance to "settle down" as concussion damage can be cumulative and a second concussion, if occurs within a week can be even more devastating.

The NFL claims to be taking extra precautions with player injuries these days, especially when it comes to concussions, so I guess we will see if the NFL actually meets B.C.'s high standards.

If I read the 3 down article correctly, if Rourke comes up to the game roster from the PR, he doesn't have to be waived again to go back to the PR.
I assume this means that this can go on like this for the rest of the season if the situation changes.

Quite frankly with the money the NFL teams why do it this way. Let there be a 3rd QB by adding 1 more to the number for game day. Sitting on the sidelines involved in the game is better than just PR work for development.
If the former first-overall pick can’t make the start, Rourke could be temporarily elevated from the practice roster to backup veteran C.J. Beathard, which would not expose him to waivers for a fourth time when he is eventually sent back down.
Dano, I assume the get around for a player and team is saying the player has no symptoms and he plays.

Agreed. Anybody thinking Rourke might return to the CFL in 2024 is living in a fantasy world or has a source for some really good recreational drugs. He went to the NFL fully understanding it was a "long play" that will not come without its bumps and disappointments. Success would take time and he is willing to invest that time. I think he is fully willing to grind it out for at least 3 years before he might toss in the NFL towel. Has it worked out the way his most optimistic vision was so far? Probably not but it's worked out much better than his most pessimistic vision. He's gotten a full practice squad year so far with a good organization that believes in him enough that they never brought in another QB to compete with him for that 3td/emergency spot.

True there is little chance Rourke will play but that's really the way it's been all season. If he plays it's because both Lawrence and Beathard are injured. As it's turned out Lawrence has been knicked up a couple time but otherwise has been healthy.

Beathard has seen very limited action but has done his job completing 12 of 14 attempts on the season. He got in a few reps in garbage time in two blowout losses earlier in the season. Then he came in when Lawrence hurt his ankle to end the 2nd last series in the Cincy OT loss. McManus would miss what would have been a FG to take a 3 pt lead. Cincy responded with a go ahead FG of their own leaving Beathard to take over for the final possession of regulation with the game on the line. All he did was guide them to a game tying FG with 20 seconds to go then put them in position to win in OT until a holding call wiped out a deep pass to Ridley that had them at the Cincy 2.

Jacksonville is now in a 3 way tie for 1st in their division but have the tie breaker over Indy and Houston. Still they cannot afford to stumble. Houston has Cleveland and Tennessee @home and @ Indy left. Indy has @Atlanta and home to Vegas and Houston. Jacksonville is @TB, home to Carolina and @Tennessee. They have arguably the easier schedule but nonetheless can ill afford to stumble. If Lawrence's concussion takes him out obviously Rourke will get activated again if nobody claims him on waivers but they will still ride Beathard as far as necessary.

BREAKING. Rourke is now a Patriot:

https://3downnation.com/2023/12/18/new- ... m-jaguars/
While that's interesting news so maybe it's time to just post stuff on your NE thread if he signs there.

Did the Jags just screw themselves as this time he is grabbed leaving them without an up and comer?
The team has three regular season games remaining and Rourke will be on the active roster for all three as per the NFL’s waiver rules. Per sources, Rourke will travel to New England on Monday night. His final earnings for the 2023 season will be $398,996 USD.
When asked if Rourke could play before the 2023 season is out, one source said, “Wouldn’t surprise me. Every other guy they have played this season has not got the job done.”
I haven't watched NE play this season so not sure it's a QB problem or deeper which for a QB new to the NFL like Nathan Rourke you don't want to be playing for the first time if you have a poor OL and overall poor offense.
