1. Casey Printers - Printers was exciting to watch. I do like Flutie more but I associate him more as a Calgary player.
2. Greg Stumon
3. Lui Passaglia
4. Jim Mills
5. Geroy Simon

Casey Printers I can kind of understand. Greg Stumon? Wow! I can't say that he ever crossed my mind as a favourite Lion, though he was very good for a few years. There's gotta be some story there. Please share!

I remember liking Stumon a lot.

He began his CFL career with the BC Lions in 1986, playing until 1988. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 1987. He made the 1987 all-star team as a defensive end and the 1988 all-star team as an outside linebacker.

I remained a fan of his after he left the lions.

Thanks David, for thinking/sharing about the topic for this thread. Take care everybody.
Some great selections there, Ernie. You can't go wrong with a list that includes Johnson, Clermont, and Lulay (who is basically the Lions' answer to the Sedins  ).

I agree with you on Burnham. Seems like a nice, humble guy. I don't think we're going to realize how truly brilliant he is until he's retired. Time will view him favourably.

Unfortunately, Homer was before my time, but you and some of the other older Lionbackers might enjoy this piece. Some wonderful footage of the first "home" Grey Cup played on a sun-drenched Saturday in 1963, just 8 days after US President Kennedy was assassinated.

That's quite a find! Comparative clarity (and in colour), where other film I've seen on Youtube from that era, e.g. the following year's Grey Cup win for our Lions, is quite a visual mess, and in black and white. But at least they were victorious that next try, which makes watching worthwhile. Good-looking as your 1963 footage is, this was painful for me to re-live, even so long after the fact, my emotions engaged! But thanks, it was quite interesting on many levels. So much to note about all manner of things back then. Anyhow, if anyone has a link to a better version of this from 1964 please share. Here's all I got (sorry, viewing's a bit of a chore, perhaps only for diehards): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwZ2WK4BSEA

It's hard to pick 5 and for me it might have been better if it was divided into segments like eras, nationals etc.

Like others here say favourites might not be the best and of course I'm biased as I know some or worked with them.

1. Sonny Homer - North Van kid who I last saw when he and Jim Sandusky were signing programs at the Lions game. Liked him as he was a great we looked up to. He knew my brother and knew of me so he's always on my list.

2. Willie Fleming - my mom introduced me to him at Nor' Welters track fashion show when I was 15. When I shook his hand he made a joke about how firm we Canadians grip a handshake.

3. Buck Pierce. Holds the record of 37 completions in one game.

4. Glen Jackson - LB - clearly one of the best players ever to come out of a BC school and one of the Lion greats.

5. Lui Passaglia - I could call from the stands or TV every fake kick he would execute. Not just a kicker but a player.

____

Others:

Sol E. - one of the greatest ever here!
Darren Flutie
Jim Sandusky
Terry Bailey

Rick Klassen
Nick Hebeler
Jerry Tagge
Jim Young
John Henry White

3. Brent Johnson
4. Jim Young
5. Jason Clermont

Lions I found really tough to leave off that list: Geroy Simon, Angus Reid, James "Quick" Parker, Brett Anderson, Mervyn Fernandez.

Very well said. For a franchise that's been around since 1954, it's next to impossible to reduce everything down to 5 players.

Brett Anderson
Aside from being the full-time kickoff specialist, Bret Anderson always played more of a supporting role as he wasn't often placed in the starting lineup and you can even call him indecisive as he had to juggle between a professional football player or a fireman. As a result, he was clearly overshadowed by others but was still appreciated given his 13-years with his team.

I think Bret Anderson may have been one of the best pure athletes in Lions history. He was so good that Wally negotiated a deal to allow him to play football in addition to being a Port Coquitlam firefighter. Sure, his passport helped but he was just so versatile (slotback, kicker, punter). How many players do you think Wally would allow to miss training camp and just "start the regular season"?!? And then that player arrives and doesn't miss a beat?

Well, to stick with the firefighting theme here Robbie, I am imagining that my house is on fire. I have a house full of things I value, but can only pick my five favourite things before it burns down and I get out safely.

That is the fun of this exercise.

I couldn't stop at 5. I would probably end up hospitalized or dead from trying to keep going back in for more.

Haha, likely me as well but fortunately, this has not yet been put to the test. The point is, most people would likely want to "save" the items to which we attach sentimental value (e.g. grabbing the family photo album instead of the $500 Vitamix). Similarly, picking players also taps into our fond emotional memories or sentiment found in the limbic area of the brain known as the amygdala.

Well said, David. Anderson was not only an all-round athlete with excellent hands but a great student of the game who backed up every receiving position while performing kickoffs and occasionally punting. Anderson even served as emergency third-string quarterback at one point with the Lions, a position he had played in high school and briefly at SFU.

My favourite Bret Anderson moment was in a home game against Winnipeg on Oct. 4, 2003. I happened to be hosting some Seahawks season ticket holders from Seattle in my usual end zone section. The Lions were trailing 31-20 in the fourth quarter when Dave Dickenson hit Chris Brazzell for a touchdown at our end, then hit Anderson on a post pattern for a 2-point convert at the back of the end zone right in front of us to pull the Lions within a field goal at 31-28. Before I knew it, I heard the ball whiz by my head as Anderson whipped it into the stands. That ball would have made a nice souvenir but it could easily have broken my nose. The Lions later capped the comeback with a 103-yard TD pass from Dickenson to Geroy Simon for a 35-31 victory. It was an impressive introduction to CFL football for my Seattle visitors.

For those of you who listed Casey Printers, it's fair to say that he was one of your favourite completely because of his first stint with the Lions especially with his 2004 MOP performance.

That said, did any of you no longer listed him as the top 5 favourite after his second stint with the Lions with his less-than-favourable performance and his bad circumstances beyond his release in his last game, and his last pass as a Lion was in the form of a game-ending interception.
