Jones: Solid tackle by an Eskimo

July 21, 2009

Special to CFL.ca

EDMONTON -- A man suspected in a personal robbery was stopped short in his tracks thanks to the efforts of two citizens, one of whom is Edmonton Eskimo Kitwana Jones.

At around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, a woman in her 50's was walking in the area of 100 Avenue and 103 Street when a 29-year-old male approached her. A struggle ensued, resulting in the male obtaining a purse and laptop computer.

The suspect was pursued by a male witness. Kitwana Jones then became involved in the foot pursuit and the pair caught up with the man in a nearby alley. The males held onto the suspect until responding officers arrived at the scene and arrested him. No one was injured in the incident.

“The suspect would likely have gotten away had it not been for the quick thinking of these bystanders,” says Downtown Criminal Investigation Section Detective Bill Allen. “It’s an individual’s choice as to their level of involvement, but everyone must keep in mind that there’s always a chance that weapons could be present and an innocent person could be injured when trying to make a citizen’s arrest.”

The woman’s property was recovered and Terrance Allan Walcott, 29, was charged with robbery.

It's refreshing to read crime stories in which players are on the right side of the law.

:whs:

Not much else to say, I totally agree.
I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

It's good that Kitwana Jones acted as a good samaritan.

Unfortunately in this day and age, good deeds can backfire. Suppose the robber claimed that Jones roughed him up too much and now is suing Jones as well as pressing charges for his vigilante actions. :sigh:

As a real life example in football, baseball, and basketball games, suppose a fan runs into the field, and a player engages in a fight with the fan. The fan might face charges by the law, but the player will likely be punished by his league.

I have to applaud Kitwana. It’s not always easy to break through the socially-accepted norm of keeping to one’s self, or through the fear of a dangerous situation. But hey, as the man said, he fears only God Himself!

Nice work, Kitwana...

Now if you can only make yourself believe that the opposing Running back is holding a purse instead of a football...
-Believes in building from the trenches outwards. A great O-Line and D-Line guarantees an above average team.
-A coach that has to give a motivational pregame speech is probably a coach that is insecure about his game plan.
