Has anyone ever caught comedian George Carlin's comparison between baseball and football? Simply brilliant. I'm not sure if he's the all-time best stand-up comedian, but you'll have a hard time finding anyone with a better gift for the English language than George.

For your listening enjoyment....

I'm having trouble loading it but I have heard it before and it's a classic... he used it in his opening monologue when he hosted the very first episode of Saturday Night Live on October 11, 1975 (transcript for that version here).
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
