I saw an ad on Shaw community access channel 4 that they would air the Sep 8 game vs UMan Bisons -- start time 2pm.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

This actually wasn't the Shrum Bowl. The Clan and Birds play twice a year. The Shrum Bowl is October 6th hosted by SFU.

Pretty brutal schedule though, SFU played friday night against Calgary and then had only 3 days to prepare for UBC.

Anybody planning to attend the 2008 Shrum Bowl on Thursday, October 9th, 7:00 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium?

I suppose none of you attended the exciting Shrum Bowl last night - perhaps one of the most exciting one ever as the Clan eeked out a 20-19 game to even the series at 15-15-1. And there was a dedication to Bob Ackles at the game.

SHRUM: Clan Beat 'Birds With Last Second FG

Thursday, October 09, 2008
VANCOUVER - Add another chapter to the Shrum Bowl history books.

With 1:17 left on the clock, SFU’s second-year QB Bernd Dittrich led the Clan 54 yards to the UBC 30-yard line, setting up Jeffrey Biles game-winning 38-yard field goal to give SFU the 20-19 victory over UBC as time expired in Shrum Bowl XXXI.

Dittrich converted two third downs for the Clan in the last drive including a nine-yard toss to Brandon Halverson on a third and four. The biggest moment of the drive, however, would come three plays later as the QB from Austria hit Tony Strong for a 21-yard gain on a third down to get the Clan to the edge of field goal territory. Another short gain and a down to stop the clock set up Biles for the game winning moment.

The victory all but assures the Clan of their first playoff birth since 2003 as they lead the Canada West at 5-2 and will clinch this weekend if Saskatchewan downs Manitoba. Any Manitoba loss from this point on will earn the Clan their coveted birth.

For the ‘Birds, the loss drops them to 2-5 on the season and mathematically eliminates UBC from the post season.

“You know what, we played hard for four quarters and we played a good football team. Someone is going to have to lose that game and unfortunately it was us,” said UBC head coach Ted Goveia. “I’m not embarrassed by the effort that our guys showed – we played outstanding – but unfortunately that is the way it goes some times.”

A Sam Carino interception at the 9:15 mark of the fourth quarter helped sway the momentum back to the T-Birds who had been held scoreless in the second half. Rookie starter Billy Greene drove UBC to the SFU 19, setting up a Shawn McIsaac field goal that gave the 'Birds a 19-17 lead.

The rookie from Surrey made his second start of his CIS career and was 14-for-27 for 149 with two interceptions. He led the T-Birds to a 16-10 half-time advantage but he was only 5-for-15 in the second half with a pair of picks in the fourth quarter.

His counterpart for the Clan, Dittrich, was 17-for-30 for 169 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The top offensive performer on the evening and go to guy for the ‘Birds was second year RB Dave Boyd who had a season-high 149 yards on the ground and one touchdown.

The T-Birds ability to move the ball on the ground gave them the huge time of possession advantage. They had the ball for more than 36 minutes but were unable to finish off their drives with majors.

UBC ended 4-for-4 in the red zone but three of those conversions would be of the three point variety. Fifth-year Shawn McIsaac continued his amazing season, making four kicks on as many attempts, converting once from 22 yards, twice from 27, and once from a season long 37 yards.

He came into the game leading the Canada West in field goals made (14), attempts (18), and percentage (77.8) and increased each of those totals this evening.

The ‘Birds took control of the game in the second quarter thanks to a pair of McIsaac field goals and the Boyd touchdown to take a 16-10 lead. SFU had a 10-7 lead after the first quarter following a Jeremy Levy TD just over 12 minutes into the game.

The win by the Clan snaps UBC’s four-year winning streak at the Shrum Bowl and evened the series at 15-15-1 all-time since the first bowl game back in 1967.

SFU faces the Saskatchewan Huskies (4-1) on the road next week in a battle of teams atop the Canada West while the T-Birds have a bye week before hosting the Huskies to close out the season.

Game Notes: One of the greatest finishes to a Shrum Bowl ever came fittingly on a night dedicated to one of the greatest supports of football in BC, the late Bob Ackles. The UBC Thunderbirds, SFU Clan, and BC Lions made a donation of $2,759 to the BC Football Hall of Fame, an initiative being developed by Ackles at the time of his passing…On hand to present the Shrum trophy to SFU was Gordon Shrum Jr, son of Dr. Gordon Shrum for whom this game is named...SFU RB Gabe Ephard had 85 yards on 10 carries while Dittrich had 72 yards on eight carries…Spencer Betts’ had a 47-yard punt return in the first quarter in his first play in returning from a mild concussion suffered two weeks ago against Regina…SFU’s Ray Wladichuk and Anthony DesLauriers each had a pick…Tyler Codron had UBC’s other interception.
