Perhaps worst of all it has been reported that he had never even snowboarded before. He had $25 million reasons to wait a few years before picking up a new hobby. He may have just really screwed himself over big time.

If you had even skimmed the article you would've answered your own question. Snowboarding is generally a lot harder on your body than skiing.
It does list behavior that's in the standard NBA player's contract -- motorcycles, skydiving and various other 'risk' behavior
