No, the USL does not use the away goals rule. All the goals are evenly weighted regardless of whether it's a home or away goal.

All three Vancouver-based teams went into overtime in their respective games today. While all of you are still fuming in the CFL Football forum over the fact that the Lions lost in OT today, how about taking some comfort in the fact that the other two Vancouver teams pulled out a win in OT today? The three Vancouver teams played a pre-season game, a regular season game, and a playoff game today - and all three went into overtime. If it's little consolation that the Canucks won their pre-season game in OT today, then it should be a HUGE consolation that the Whitecaps won their all-important semi-final playoff game in Montreal to advance to the USL Championship game!!! :rockin:

After settling for a 0-0 draw in Vancouver in game 1 on Friday night, the Whitecaps came into Montreal on Sunday needing a win in game 2. For the record, the Whitecaps have lost all 4 of the semi-final series they played in over the last 6 seasons, 3 of which were lost via a shootout. They haven't made it to a championship game since 1992. As I mentioned above, the team seemed to be cursed in semi-final matches.

Well, the curse has finally been lifted, although it was an extremely close one. The Whitecaps and Montreal Impact played to a scoreless draw in regulation and just when it seemed to be headed to a shootout again where the Whitecaps always seemed to be cursed, they struck for two quick goals late in the second half of extra time to win game 2 and the series 2-0. Striker Eduardo Sebrango was the hero, scoring against his former team-mates on a breakaway in the 24th minute of extra time. Tony Donatelli put the game away in injury time on a similar break. Both goals were set up by David Testo.

The Whitecaps will now play the Rochester Raging Rhinos in the Final on Saturday, September 30, in Rochester.

a couple of questions for you ...

1) is it a one game take all or a combo of games?

2) will it be on tv somewhere?

3) Is there a next stage after this "final"?
Now that I don't live in Quesnel do I need to change my handle??

So I am assuming this is a one game final as compared to the 2 previous home and homes with Mtl/Miami?

Rochester is a nice city and a great minor league sports town. Nice baseball park and a decent arena for hockey/basketball.

I was there for the ABA Great Eight last year and with the local team in it and eventually wining it the crowds were really good.

Answering your questions:
LFITQ wrote:1) is it a one game take all or a combo of games?
Unlike the previous playoff series, the championship game will only consist of one game. This is a rather unusual format that seems to be used only in soccer. This was the format in the former A-League as well as way back in the NASL days. The playoff rounds usually consisted of a series of games, but the championship match was only one game.
2) will it be on tv somewhere?
Taken from that link I posted above: "Saturday's Final in Rochester will kick off at 4:00 p.m. PT, and can be seen live on Fox Sports World Canada and in the US on Fox Soccer Channel."
3) Is there a next stage after this "final"?
No.

The CBC evening news showed a highlight of Eduardo Sebrango great goal. Unfortunately, he celebrated too wildly by taking off his shirt and drawing himself a second yellow card for the game, resulting in a red card and a suspension for the final. The Whitecaps are appealing his suspension. Hopefully, the USL will allow him to play in Saturday's championship match. :cr:

Eduardo Sebrango will not be able to play in Saturday's final because the USL denied the Whitecaps' appeal. :bang:

Go Whitecaps :rockin: !!

Playing great soccer (or is that football  ) right now
they will miss Sebrango but Donnatelli is playing well right now and my buddy Sita Taty Motundo had a wicked late substitution game last time so maybe he'll play more.
There is allways Jason Jordan and Joey Gjerdsen had the flu so he is going to fill the net on Saturday!!

Yeah, hopefully Jason Jordan can fill Eduardo Sebrango's shoes.

The USL announced on Sunday that Rochester would host the final instead of Vancouver not because they finished higher in the regular season standings, but because they had a bigger and newer stadium. :?

Last season's USL championship final that was won by the Seattle Sounders was held in enormous Qwest Field. Perhaps if the Whitecaps told the USL that BC Place would be the venue for the final, then Vancouver would have been chosen as hosts.

Another reason to justify a new waterfront stadium for the Whitecaps!

You can see a good 3.5 video clip of highlights of Sunday's game 2 in Montreal, including the excellent saves, the near misses, and the great goals by Sebrango and Donatelli at this site:

It includes Sebrango's celebration during which he took off his jersey.

Congratulations to Joey Gjertsen for being voted the United Soccer League Most Valuable Player. Joey Gjertsen opened the season with five goals in the team?s first eight games and closed with seven in the last eight to finish third in the league in points (31) and fourth in goals (12), picking up seven assists along the way to finish tied for second in the league for one of the best all-around performances. He is the second consecutive Whitecap to win league MVP after Jason Jordan last year.

Exactly 27 years and 22 days to the day that the Vancouver Whitecaps own the 1979 Soccer Bowl on September 8, 1979, the Whitecaps FC won the 2006 USL Championship with their convincing 3-0 win over the Rochester Raging Rhinos tonight in Rochester. In doing so, they made some history as they became the very first team in the 16 year existence to win the championship game as the visiting team. They pulled off the win even without star striker Eduardo Sebrango who was suspended for the game. This is also the first time in team history that the Whitecaps have won three straight playoff games on the road in a single season. Vancouver did not concede a goal in any of them.

After a near scoreless first half, a Joey Gjertsen cross into the box in the 45th minute opened the scoring when it was deflected by Rhino defender Nate Craft just inside the far post for an own goal and a 1-0 lead for the Whitecaps seconds before the break.

Nine minutes into the second half Gjertsen set up the second goal. Charging down the right side of the field and into the box, he sent the ball into the center of the box as a defender came sliding in and foud Tony Donatelli open 14 yards out. Donatelli took a touch to set up his shot, burying the ball over the shoulder of Scott Vallow from 13 yards out.

The final goal in the 86th minute was a stunner as Sita-Taty Matondo came off the bench to score within second of entering the game. A through ball up the middle from David Testo sent Matondo on a breakaway that drew Vallow out. Matondo beat Vallow outside the box and slipped the ball home for the commanding lead to seal the championship.

Congratulations to Jeff Clarke for being selected as the USL Championship series MVP.

An excellent year for the Whitecaps men for finally winning the USL championship after so many frustrating defeats in previous seasons. It was just over a year ago when I created this thread in disgust after another aggravating loss in the playoffs last year. What a difference a year makes: http://www.lionbackers.com/cheer/viewtopic.php?t=7277

This has been a great year for soccer in Vancouver, with the Whitecaps Women first winning the W-League championship in August, and now the gentlemen Whitecaps FC winning the USL championship. Along with the Whitecaps women, these guys are heroes:

Were any of you at the RIO on Broadway tonight?

The Whitecaps will return to Vancouver tomorrow, Sunday, October 1 on West Jet Flight #803 Toronto to Vancouver and are expected to arrive at 5:16 p.m. Who wants to go greet them?
