Coronavirus (COVID-19)

No doubt this virus has scared the entire world. In Washington State, 10 have passed now with over three dozen others tested positive. At least a dozen cases in British Columbia. And countries with serious problems are China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Italy and all these countries along with Seattle are very popular travel destinations for Greater Vancouver and most residents have close family members who live there and often travel there to see them.

Will this be a global pandemic?

Local businesses have been affected, and it wouldn't be surprising at all if attendance in Canucks and Whitecaps games will plummet.

What I'd like to know is whether or not this virus has made it to North Korea. They are a vulnerable population to be sure and ill-equipped to deal with it. It could be devastating if it took hold there.

Complete lockdown of Northern Italy. It looks like those who had planned to go to famous tourist places in that area like Venice and Milan must cancel. Sports games might continue but with no attendance at all.

I don't know what constitutes a pandemic but given the number of countries with the virus, it's continued spread to new places, I would say it is a pandemic. The good new at least is that it appears that in China and South Korea, the rate is infection is slowing which suggests that some of the measures put in place seem to be working.

Back on April 29, 2015, a Guinness World record was established in a home Baltimore Orioles game against the Chicago White Sox with an attendance of '0' because of civil unrest in that city at that time. One would think it's an extreme rarity.

But now, it looks like professional sports games in both Seattle and San Francisco will tie the record for 0 attendance because of local orders to limit crowds.

The NHL has just suspended the season.

Now the inevitable question arises. When does CFL training camps/pre season start, where is the Covid 19 problem at that point and will it run into the start of the season.

If the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo proceeds as schedule, Canada will not send a Canadian Olympic team. That's devastating for all the Canadian hopefuls wanting to win an Olympic medal. :-? :bawl:

The IOC has confirmed that the 2020 Summer Olympics will be "postponed" to 2021.

just goes to show that politically speaking, even china can do something right once in a while

If only every country had done this right from the beginning, as I was wishing they would do.

Just watch. If and when it seems like we have beat this thing in Canada, we will loosen up too much too soon, like Trump is talking about doing, and things will get worse again

A suspected Covid-19 male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, hooked to a ventilator and wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student female nurse appears and gives him a partial sponge bath.

“Nurse,"' he mumbles from behind the mask, "are my testicles black?" Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, "I don't know, Sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet."

He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?"

Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles gently in the other.

She looks very closely and says, "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine."

The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very slowly, “Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen very, very, closely:

“Are - my - test - results - back?"

Nice joke lol.. and laughs are needed these days.

Very sad for those who are sick or have lost loved ones or have family in seniors care these days as these folks are basically imprisoned and can't get out.

BC is doing our part and we should be proud as Canadians that our governments of all political stripes are pretty much in synch on clear, calm, consistent and concise messaging on what our part is while they scramble to get things done.

To me it's understandable - but a distraction - for the media demanding modelling data as it's only good for planning.

Models have been out on how this speads in communities and that's good enough for me.

But trying to instill fear is not a motivator to change behaviour.
It is just a part of the picture yes but no one stopped smoking (or vaping now) based on the risks. Same with road safety. Youth especially don't listen to fear stories as their perceptions of risk are lower than ours until often the late 20s or early 30s!

Smoking cessation sessions, information, resources preceded the gov't orders to ban smoking. Same with seat belts where enforcement is one tool.

Washington Post has a free article here and simulation of how it spreads. I can't find it now but a computer model from a US western university is what Trump's advisor Dr Birk refers to all the time.

Sounds like the decision has already been made there will be no PNE-like large gatherings. Goodbye CFL season (at least not with fans attending).
