There's been some threads for Canadian Politics, Provincial Politics in BC, as well as international politics in the USA and UK. For the first time, let's talk about politics in another province. Specifically the neighbours across the Rockies in Alberta as they will be having the provincial election on April 16, 2019.

For the longest time, Alberta was always an extremely conservative province by always choosing the Progressive Conservative party, but history was made when 2015 when the PC was dethroned. In 2015, NDP won with 54 seats while relatively new merged Wildrose Party finished second at 21 seats while the PC was demoted to third place with 6 seats - a whopping 61 seat loss.

Massive changes were made as a result of the loss which essentially dissolved the once powerful Alberta PC party when they decided to merge with Wildrose Party to become the United Conservative party. Let's see if that will make any difference.

What I'll say is that traditionally, merging parties does not really improve things for the opposition(s) and it could just as easily lose voters as it can gain.

Mathematically:
United Conservative Party Voters <> Wildrose Party Voters + Progressive Conservative Voters

And I'm inclined to think: United Conservative Party Voters < Wildrose Party Voters + Progressive Conservative Voters as former supporters might go to the NDP or possibly the Alberta Party.

Do you think Alberta will go back to being conservative or continue with the NDP?

I have family in Alberta and surprisingly my middle of the road political brother likes Premier Notley (and he's a knowledgeable voter). He was saying that some of his friends like the feds carbon tax impact on them personally than Alberta's but who knows if that will factor much in to the vote there.

Notley's government had a tough situation facing them coming and successive gov'ts for years ignored the reality that O&G will eventually not be the bonanza it's been.

BC has its own challenges as successive municipal and city gov'ts in the major urban areas were afraid of the voters and voters are against two things: 1. Density. 2. Sprawl. Thus we've spread ourselves too thin in people and only now are fixing public transit (all expensive unless you get density).

Pundits suggest on TV that the Premier is personally more popular than the party being led but they don't know yet the repercussions from the news that Jason Kenny brought federal Conservative tricks to run a 'kamikaze' candidate against Brian Jean for Leader of the United party.

My personal opinion is that the 2015 election was the result of a wildly dysfunctional PC Party that believed that it was going to be in power forever. A corrupt, unpopular leader, a divided conservative movement and you got a break in the 44 year cycle. Do I believe that Albertan's have magically turned some kind of corner and embraced a more centrist kind of approach. Nope. They don't like the Libs, they don't like socialist parties and if they run true to form, this thing with Jason Kenney will be muddied and confused to a point that many will have doubts as to the veracity of the claim or it will be passed off as the actions of a few bad actors not at the Kenney level. If anything, Notley has read the writing on the wall the last 2 years and has moved more right in order to placate the masses. I might be wrong but I don't see another NDP Gov.

In the end, Jason Kenney from the United Conservative Party (UCP) won 54.9% of the popular vote and 63 seats, reducing Premier Rachel Notley's governing Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) to Official Opposition with 24 seats.

It looks like non-Conservative parties will never last too long in Alberta - at least not more than one election term.

It's hard in that province. It seems that Notley was liked but not her party.

Kenney's pitch builds on the Trump way - 'they're against us' and how regulation is hurting the economy.

The irony is that across the prairies the students are protesting climate change inaction while the Premiers there are playing politics. The irony on the carbon tax it was the right BC Liberals who brought this in and our economy hasn't had the harm they say will happen.

The social cultural war to ensure that parents of students going some club can be notified is getting push back from students and other non gay sources - that is heartening as we don't need the US style divisiveness.

The upcoming federal election will be a dirty election with the Conservatives going full on Trump .

I watched the CBC national story on Guns in Canada and it will be back tonight. For the first time in my life I felt ashamed to be a Canadian listening to the pro-gun crowd and other proponents of assault rifles and hand guns for all tell trauma doctors to "stay in their lane".

One group's commercial was chilling as it sounded like a call to arms reminiscent of the call by religious right groups that led to doctors doing abortions being shot.

I don't know why Andrew Scheer is gun crazy but check that out. It's scary.

As one doctor notes, the majority of Canadians favour tighter controls and access to assault weapons and hand guns, yet the gun nuts are winning.

I tend to agree. The problem with any playbook that garner's success, other's tend to copy it. Kenney, Ford, Scheer. I loved that Scheer's first real platform speech emphasized what? The Military. Sound familiar. "We need a stronger military, be part of the US Missile Defense Shield, take a more active role in the Ukraine" etc. etc. Unfortunately, Scheer doesn't seem to realize that we don't wrap ourselves in the flag the same way the American's do. Yes we need a solid, well equipped armed force but even military experts were questioning how Scheer proposed to pay for all the things he was suggesting. Never mind the fact that Canadians are as interested in things like jobs, education, healthcare as they are in the military. If that is their opening gambit, and it is that thin, then they had better get more well rounded quick or they are going to lose some of those who are currently disenfranchised with Trudeau. There is a truism that being in opposition is much easier than actually running things. Trump has a big mouth but little ability to actually run anything properly. We'll see how long the Ford Pony show goes along once the rhetorical promises start to fall by the wayside. Same with Kenney when he runs smack into the wall that is his provinces woes are largely the result of forces beyond his control. It's easy to make promises, harder to keep them.

Right on Sir P.

Even the Libs were naive in 2015 to say big things with the military but there are other priorities than joining the foreign war follies.

You left out how he wants the submarine for the Arctic when there are far cheaper ways including research that is vital and expeditions like that proposed by scientists. Subs aren't part of the plan for Canada.

Scheer's gun policy scares me. Check out Scheer and guns and also the CBC National as they're doing a gun series for the last 3 nights.

Where does he want to move our embassy? Stupid. The QB comments was equally stupid.
Scheer also promised to “begin the necessary work” to move Canada’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, following Trump’s decision to do so. He said he would enter negotiations to join the U.S. ballistic missile defence program, and fix defence procurement — always a tricky file for governments — in part by putting money towards new icebreakers, fighter jets and submarines.

Where Trudeau’s Liberals have talked about maintaining the rules-based world order and reforming existing institutions, Scheer said Tuesday it was time for Canada to play a leadership role in building “new international political infrastructure” to advance freedom, and even managed to avoid using a hockey metaphor to do so. “In the 21st century, some politicians want Canada to be the referee,” he said. “I want Canada to be the quarterback.”

If I recall. Didnt Joe Clarke make a similar suggestion re: embassy in his stint as PM. At that time the suggestion was deemed folly and I doubt it would be much different today.
If Scheer goes that route he is going to look more Trump like than ever. A comparison you would think that many would not want.
