On another note. It is sad that people feel that they have to get together in large groups with lots of noise and fancy lights and booze and yelling, etc, in order to have fun.

Never needed any of that to have loads of fun on New Years, or any other day.
WADR, you're long since on record as hating big crowds for anything. That puts you squarely in the minority and sort of compromises your opinion on the matter. No one is saying everyone HAS to attend such a function. Stay home and watch Dick Clark (ok, he's dead, whoever succeeded him) if you want. But for people who want to celebrate in such fashion, why shouldn't they have that option? Just because of your personal whims?

The fact is, pretty much EVERY big city in the civilised world that follows the Gregorian calendar manages to put on some sort of New Year's celebration. Except us.

I remember a time when people understood what partying meant and it didn't include vandalism, shootings, stampedes and so on.

Well that's still the case. Except for here, for some reason — which is probably why we gave up having NYE celebrations in the first place.

Could never understand why people would line up 12 hours to bring in the New Year in New York.
