BC Lions 60 Seasons of Pride Anniversary Special Video

A good, new video about the 60 years of the BC Lions franchise.

But of course, it is very difficult to squeeze and summarize 60 seasons into a 20 minute video clip.

At least it makes a good attempt to cover as much as possible, starting with the various BC Lions logos throughout the years and there's a fair amount of coverage in the 1970's when the Lions didn't do as well highlighted by the performance of Jim Young. And there's ample coverage over the Grey Cup wins that get less media coverage and attention, specifically the 1985 and 2000 wins. Good coverage of Bob Ackles throughout the years as well. In addition, it's good to see recent interviews with Lion legends like Jim Young and Al Wilson who don't give too many public appearances in addition to the usual ones who often get interviewed like Lui, Buono, and Jamie Taras.

Even though all Lions know that 1994 GC all too well, I always like it when there's interviews with the less popular players. And this video provided such an example in the fact that there's a long interview with who I consider to be highly underappreciated because whenever there's discussions on the best and most memorable Lions running back, this name almost never gets mentioned even though he was a integral part of the championship team and also set a then-CFL record with 22 TD's in a season - Cory Philpot.

I thought the producers did a phenomenal job with this video. Lots of rare old clips. I highly recommend viewing it. It would be nice to give season ticket holders a nice collectors keepsake DVD of this, or hand it out to fans on Opening Day. At the very least, they should show snippets on the jumbotron throughout the season.

Just surprised it's coming out now (heading into the 61st season as opposed to last year).

Great, thanks for posting Robbie. I'm at work right now so I'm gonna save it until I get home so I can watch it with the sound.....

I have no doubt I'll have some comments after watching it. I doubt I'll be dissappointed. Getting to see twenty minutes of Lions video in the middle of January? Sounds good to me.... :good:

Telus uploaded their video on their channel. The difference is that they offer it in 1080p as well. Not sure why the official BC Lions channel only upload videos on 360p.

Well there isn't anything 'earth-shattering' in the video (except the Dirty30 story, I hadn't heard that before). However, I certainly enjoyed it........

So thanks again Robbie for posting.....

I'd say it's because the producers wanted to include and consider the Lions' 60th/2013 season in making the video. Had the Lions made it all the way in their 60th season, then obviously this video would be edited and include that. With the season ending in late November, then giving the producers just over a month to create and release the video in mid-January is quite reasonable.

(Sure, you're most welcome, notahomer. ) * 2

A few thoughts, comments, and questions to some of those who were interviewed and one of the Grey Cup wins.

Jim Young
1. I wonder deep down he feels a lot of anguish and heartache over the fact that despite his great individual performance as a receiver his BC Lions team was very bad for the most part in his seasons from 1967-1979 and as a result he never got to play in a Grey Cup game and winning only one playoff game in 1977. Upon his return as a coach/GM in 1990 the team was in turmoil.

2. When it comes to great receivers, there's usually discussions about great quarterback-receiver pairings but with Jim Young, none if his quarterback counterparts were legendary as well. Jim Young is a memorable, legendary Lion receiver but Paul Brothers, Don Moorhead, Eric Guthrie, and Jerry Tagge were certain NOT memorable and legendary BC LIons quarterbacks. :bang: Unfortunately by the time the Lions finally received a good, memorable Lions quarterback in the form of Roy Dewalt in 1980, Jim Young retired.

Al Wilson
1. He was Jim Young's teammate starting in 1972 and both legends endured the terrible seasons of the 1970's. Fortunately and unlike Jim Young, Al Wilson's persistency finally paid off with a Grey Cup appearance in 1983 and a championship in 1985 and rightfully he deserved to carry the cup first.

Wally Buono
1. I wonder whether he has better memories in his involvement with the Calgary Stampeders or the BC Lions.

2. Although there's no doubt Wally Buono can very well be the best CFL coach ever, he certainly had his share of huge heartaches and most of them occurred as the head coach of the Stampeders. Despite wearing three Grey Cups with Calgary, he also suffered:

Grey Cup losses (3): 1991, 1995, 1999
Home WDF losses (5): 1990, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2000

Lui Passaglia
1. He mentions that after the Lions game winning 1994 WDF TD, they didn't do a convert. But of course as that's the rule in that if on the last play is a game winning touchdown, then a convert is not to be attempted. The Lions touchdown with no time on the clock gave the Lions 6 points to change the score of 31-36 Calgary to 37-36 Lions.

2. He said that everything went well in his sixth field goal attempt in the 1994 Grey Cup which gave the Lions the win. But what exactly happened and what did he do wrong in his 5th attempt, the 37-yard attempt from the left hashmark that went wide right? Did Darren Flutie hold the ball improperly? Did Lui kick too fast or was he too nervous? And in the 2000 Grey Cup despite the fact that you made the game winning points with the last field goal, why did you also miss three other field goals and almost costed the Lions the championship in the eventual very close game?

Had Lui made that field goal, we're left to wonder if the results would have changed. Had he made it, BC would be leading by 3 with 1:04 remaining and that was certainly enough time for Baltimore to drive down field to tie the game or even make a quick game winning touchdown.

3. Did he feel heartache or even fury over the fact that the MVP award trophy and GMC truck were given to him originally, then have them take it away? :bawl: :bang:
Unlike say NFL players and their high salaries in which a brand new truck might seem like pennies, CFL players especially back in 1994 did not have a high salary and I'm sure Lui's contract was certainly not even remotely as high as Doug Flutie or Rocket Ismail. So a brand new GMC truck would indeed be a huge financial bonus for him and his family.

4. Was he ecstatic to win a fourth Grey Cup ring in 2006 as a member of the Lions staff when he was the team's director of community relations?

1994 Grey Cup
1. Looking at the audience, I noticed that the vast majority of the fans were NOT wearing BC Lions jerseys or CFL jerseys for that matter.

2. I mentioned before about audience members who are wearing jerseys of other leagues - which team are they supporting? At a Lions home game agains the Stampeders, if a fan is wearing a Calgary Flames hat then does that make him a Stampeders fan as well? At 14:48 of the video, you see two guys wearing Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys in the front row. Are they Toronto Argonauts fans the:hn? Are the BC Lions fans? Or....are they Baltimore fans because their white and blue uniforms are the same colours as the Baltimore's uniforms? :hmm:

Actually David it came out around August. I have Telus TV and happened to stumble upon it in their On Demand free section. Not sure why the club or Telus for that matter were so low key about it's initial release.
