The Lions have signed four prospects to futures contracts for 2020, including QB Ricky Lloyd and recent practice roster DL Anree Saint-Amour. They also signed former Washington Redskins defensive end Brandon Banks (not to be confused with his smaller and speedier namesake in Hamilton) and speedy Southern Illinois receiver Raphael Leonard, who attended camp this year with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Interesting regards the re-signing of Ricky Lloyd. I couldn't quite recall why and when he was released. Here's the statement from 3DownN from early this past summer. I'd forgotten that this was why/when Danny O'Brien arrived on the scene here (assuming that this article got those details right).

"The B.C. Lions have released quarterback Ricky Lloyd.

#BCLions have released QB Rickey Lloyd. @CFLonTSN @TSN_Sports @TSN1040

— Farhan Lalji (@FarhanLaljiTSN) June 25, 2019

The 26-year-old signed with the Lions last April and spent the 2018 season on the West Coast, spending most of the year developing on the practice roster. Lloyd was once viewed as having the potential to be B.C.’s quarterback of the future.

But an injury in training camp caused the Lions to add former Edmonton Eskimos QB Danny O’Brien and changed the quarterback dynamic at least for now."

Yes, Ricky Lloyd suffered a concussion in the first preseason game in Edmonton. He completed 3 of 6 passes for 56 yards and an interception before leaving the game after being sacked by Alex Bazzie on the last play of the first quarter. He didn't dress for the second preseason game against Calgary when Grant Kraemer made his big impression.

Thanks for refreshing my memory BCF. So while much criticism has been placed on adding O'Brien perhaps the main reason he came to BC was due to Lloyd's injury as opposed to Reilly demanding it. Makes sense to me as once Lloyd went down all that was left was raw rookies. Teams will always want some form of veteran presence in the mix of backups. Somebody like Lloyd with a full season in the system would still be considered a vet as opposed to raw rookie. and much more of a fit than a Kraemer or Apodaca or Sears. Makes me think if not for Lloyd's concussion he would have broke camp as #2 with O'Brien staying unemployed. That would of course been pending how Lloyd performed the rest of the preseason. If he continued to show progress from the year before he would have won the spot. If he fell on his face all bets would have been off and maybe O'Brien still gets a call.

2019 Practice Roster players signed to 2020 contracts: WR Joey Augustin (A), OL Andrew Peterson (A), K Greg Hutchins (N)
Augustin looked good before being hurt late in the second preseason game and later released. He was re-signed to the practice roster in midseason but his natural position was occupied by Duron Carter and the Lions showed no interest in moving Carter aside for a rookie.

I noticed on TSN that Edmonton has added Josiah St.John to their PR along with Jake Ceresna.

Nope. According to Farhan (who intimated....and sometimes even stated several times throughout the season), Ricky Lloyd fell out of favour for not putting in the work that management felt he needed to put in.

When management questions your commitment, your days are numbered (just ask Jonathon Jennings).

Then why bring him back... another puzzler decision.... Seems like the basis of most signings is familiarity....

Lemar Durant has been re-signed through 2021.

That's really very good news, and exactly what one would have expected. Seems a no-brainer to re-sign Durant. And for two years. Congrats! Without him our air attack this season would have been pretty one-dimensional so far as outstanding (or at least consistent) receivers go. I'm loving the prospect of two local lads (Durant and Cottoy) getting lots of attention from Reilly.

Is it just me or is that salary amount for Durant kinda high? I know Derel Walker, for example, signed for $250k with Toronto this past year and the Lions didn't want to go that high. Or are we simply seeing the Canadian premium for an elite Canadian receiver?

Walker is a free agent again this year, and if we could get him in that $200-250k range I would absolutely love to do so. I feel we still lack one more big name receiver as Duron Carter never really looked that dangerous this year. Rolling with Burnham, Walker, Durant, Cottoy, and a fifth receiver either Shaq Johnson or someone new would make the position a strength for us.

In addition to those named previously in this thread, the Lions have announced the signings of American WRs Cam Echols–Luper and Jamarius Way and DB Isiah Bennett, and have published brief bios of some of the recent signees:
Brandon Banks (6’3”, 290 – UNC Charlotte) – Following a notable four-year run at UNC Charlotte, Brandon earned a free agent signing with the Washington Redskins in 2017. He saw action in one regular season game that year before being waived and eventually signing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 and attending training camp with the club.

Jamarius Way (6’4”, 220 – South Alabama) – Size and speed illustrated, Way torched defences for 108 receptions and 1,617 yards and 12 touchdowns over two seasons and 23 career appearances for the Jags. He parlayed the lofty college numbers into multiple NFL mini-camp invites before signing with the Denver Broncos in June 2019 and attending training camp with the club.

Raphael Leonard (6’2”, 190 – Illinois State) – An undrafted free agent signing of the Jacksonville Jaguars in April 2019, the lanky wideout attended training camp with the club before being waived in late-August. He enjoyed a productive 22-game, two-year stint at Illinois State where he racked-up 91 receptions for 1,377 yards and 12 majors.

Mister Harriel (6’1”, 200 – Sacramento State) – A high school running back who made the switch to the defensive side of the ball following his freshman year at Sacramento State, Harriel earned All-Big Sky first-team honours following his junior year in 2017 with 56 solo tackles and three interceptions. He added another 40 stops and two picks as a senior in 2018.

Isiah Bennett (6’2”, 210 – Savannah State) – Claiming a starting spot as a true freshman in 2015, Bennett appeared in 41 career games over four years with the Tigers piling-up 155 solo tackles, six interceptions, 13 tackles for a loss and 18 pass knockdowns.

Thanks. I had heard Hervey talk about that re: Jennings and I think a couple previous 3rd stringer/PR QBs but don't recall mention of this re: Lloyd. Maybe my Sometimers is kicking in.

TSN 1040 just reported Duron Carter has been released (so that experiment is over).
