This coming Thursday, the Seahawks will fittingly and appropriately induct Paul Allen as 12th member in Ring of Honor. During his ownership, the Seahawks reached the postseason 13 times, won nine division titles, enjoyed eight seasons with 10 or more wins, and played in three Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLVIII.

Allen will join Steve Largent, Jim Zorn, Dave Brown, radio announcer Pete Gross, Curt Warner, Jacob Green, Kenny Easley, Dave Krieg, coach Chuck Knox, Cortez Kennedy and Walter Jones in the Ring of Honor:

22 Dave Brown CB 1976–1986
45 Kenny Easley S 1981–1987
79 Jacob Green DE 1980–1991
71 Walter Jones OT 1997–2009
96 Cortez Kennedy DT 1990-2000
— Chuck Knox Head coach 1983–1991
17 Dave Krieg QB 1980–1991
80 Steve Largent WR 1976–1989
28 Curt Warner RB 1983–1989
10 Jim Zorn QB 1976–1984

But what is rather ironic though with regards to those 9 players who are currently inducted in the Ring of Honor is the fact with the exception of Jones and Kennedy, all of them were Seahawks during the pre-1991 years. They may have a fair amount of tenure, but the fact of the matter is that prior to 2005 the Seahawks went through some very bad and pitiful seasons since its inception starting in 1976 and the team won only three playoff games and never made it to the Super Bowl. I suppose prior to 2005, those players were about as good as it gets.

So if those nine players have already been inducted, then you can imagine how many other players will require induction by default if you then compare post-2005 Seahawks players. The Seahawks will run out of numbers for their active roster!

As a good comparison by position:

QB: Russell Wilson and Matt Hasselbeck are better than Jim Zorn and Dave Krieg
RB: Marshawn Lynch and Shawn Alexander are better than Curt Warner
Receivers: Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Golden Tate, Percy Harvin, Jerramy Stevens just to name a few are better than Steve Largent.
Defensive Players: Countless Legion of Boom members are better than Brown, Easley, Green, and Kennedy.

As as such, by obligation should have their numbers retired as well in due time. When that happens, not only will the Seahawks run out of active numbers for their roster, there probably won't be enough space at CenturyLink Field to add provide ring space between the upper and lower bowls or in the rafters if there's going to be banners as well for the retired numbers.

I think you do a grave injustice to Steve.

For a smallish receiver in a big man's league, Largent was very effective and a great team guy. Reminded me a lot of Darren Flutie

It's difficult to make head-to-head comparisons between players from different eras. The rules regarding pass-interference, receiver-protection, and quarterback-protection have changed so much from Steve Largent's time to the present that it just isn't possible, in my opinion, to conclude that Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Golden Tate, Percy Harvin, and Jerramy Stevens are better receivers than Largent. If we are going to make comparisons, it seems to me that the correct frame of reference would be Player A relative to his era vs Player B relative to his.

Contextualized this way, I don't think that there's any doubt that Steve Largent (who, although not a big man, did have decent size--5-11, 187 lbs.--and similar in this respect to Baldwin, Tate, and Harvin) surpassed any of the more recent receivers noted. He was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, and I think it's doubtful that Baldwin, Kearse, Harvin, and likely Tate will make it into the Hall at all.

Good albeit scary win in Paul Allen Memorial Night.
Russell Wilson great as usual, though very questionable 3rd and 2 play to get a first down and seal the win and instead, lose yardage and take their chances on a still weak defense which allows the Rams to complete several passes and allows them for a game winning FG attempt.

Greg Zuerlein was the one who made the 57-yard FG to take the Rams to the Super Bowl earlier this year., but misses a 44 Yard FG to give the Seahawks the win.

That was an exciting game. It could certainly be argued that the Seahawks were lucky to get the win, what with the missed, although makeable, Rams FG attempt at the very end, but the total offense figures were pretty close--435 yds. for the Seahawks (against a very stout defense), 477 for the Rams.

The difference was, once again, Russell Wilson. As usual, he played lights-out, completing 17 of 23 (74%) for 268 yds., 4 TDs and 0 ints, and running for another 32 yds. I think the most outstanding play for the 'Hawks was the completion in the end zone to Tyler Lockett. Here we had Wilson running for his life to the left and flipping a pass to Lockett, who toe-taps within millimeters of the sideline for the completion.

You can see it on the following YouTube video at about the 2:08 mark. First, click on the arrowhead, and then click on "Watch on YouTube" (and wait out the ads):

That's just a very very hard pass for a right-handed QB with all his momentum going left, and, of course, the catch was spectacular.

The Seahawks' offense looks pretty solid. The ground game is working well and should improve once 2018 1st-round draft pick Rashaad Penny gets more fully incorporated into the offense. He has the breakaway speed that Chris Carson lacks, and between the two of them, they should be able to duplicate last year's production, averaging around 160 yds. per game. The passing game is OK too, although I'd like to see another WR threat added to Tyler Lockett. The receiving corps is thin with only-average receivers in David Moore and Jaron Brown and rookie D.K. Metcalf (who shows promise but needs to learn how to run routes). If, somehow, they could pick up another veteran, proven wideout or slot, they'd be strong in all areas of the offense. The O-line needs to continue to improve as well.

The thing keeping the 'Hawks from being a legitimate playoff threat is the defense. They are pretty good up front and should improve there as Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah get comfortable in their new roles,1st-round pick L.J. Collier is eased into the lineup, and Jarran Reed returns from suspension after the next game. These guys along with their three outstanding LBs give the Seahawks what should develop into a pretty solid front seven. The problem is clearly the secondary, where the only guy really playing at the level needed is SS Bradley McDougald. CB Shaquill Griffin seems to have raised his game a little, but the 'Hawks are seriously weak at the FS position, and we saw this last night in Goff's 395 yds. of passing. Against a first-rate passing attack, the 'Hawks are very vulnerable. I'm hoping that John Schneider and Pete Carroll are searching diligently for a trade for a legit FS.

The Seahawks can now enjoy a few extra days off before heading to Cleveland for a matchup with the Browns.

Tyler Lockett is probably the longest playing receiver after joining the team in 2015. Despite still be relatively young, he can be considered the captain and leader among the team receivers. Chris Carson provided a one second huge scare to the 69,000+ in the stadium by juggling the Wilson pass before securing it for the final TD of the game. Even though he's a RB, good RB's are expected to be effective receivers when called upon. While making only one reception, Luke Willson appeared to pick off where he left off.

Good effort by S Tedric Thompson to make an good attempt at the eventual deemed interception. That should have sealed the game but a 3 and out by the offence and then a weak secondary led to a nail biting last minute.

Great comeback win by the Seahawks in Cleveland after trailing 20-6 and with help of some key defensive turnovers and a bit of officiating controversies. Russell Wilson was good as usual, and despite the turnovers by the defense they still need to improve as so far this season, it's mostly very close games that could have gone either way. :cr:

That was a good (and maybe lucky) win in Cleveland. Just a helluva shame that TE Will Dissly went down with an Achilles tear. He's gone for the season, as he was last year with his meniscus tear. He had been playing so well, giving Russell Wilson another sure-handed receiver and red-zone threat. Just really bad luck for Dissly.

It remains to be seen whether the Seahawks will reach out and bring in another tight end. They have two remaining on the active roster--Luke Willson and Jacob Hollister, the latter a third-year pro with very little playing experience. Veteran TE Ed Dickson is scheduled to be available, from injured-reserve, after the 8th game of the season (so after two more games), and, as a result, the 'Hawks may stand pat and wait for his return. One thing that may factor into this is whether LT Duane Brown is ready to return, freeing up George Fant to play some tight end, rather than having to fill in for Brown at LT.

The return of DT Jarran Reed is a positive sign for the Seahawks. He's practicing this week for the first time following his 6-game suspension. Once back to form, Reed should be a monster in the middle of the D-line; he recorded 10.5 QB sacks last season. His presence (once the rust is gone), along with that of Ziggy Ansah and Jadeveon Clowney (once they're fully acclimated to the 'Hawks' defense), should--at least in theory--lead to better QB pressure going forward than we've seen in the first six games.

The Seahawks will need better QB pressure. The secondary is still a weakness--particularly at the FS position, where Tedric Thompson continues to struggle, notwithstanding his two recent interceptions (Rams and Browns). Thompson seems to be confused at times and out of position. In my opinion, this is where John Schneider and Pete Carroll should concentrate re a trade before the deadline. At the CB position, Shaquill Griffin appears to have taken a step forward this season playing better at nearly 20 lbs. lighter than last year. Right corner Tre Flowers has had his share of problems so far. He's a converted college safety with good measurables, but only average (at best) success so far at the CB position.

The upcoming game at CenturyLink against the Ravens should be a good one. Can the Seahawks slow down the excellent Lamar Jackson?

Not a good game from the Seahawks yesterday, losing to the Ravens. Some bad turnovers sealed their fate. And Lamar Jackson was tremendous--seemed like the second coming of Michael Vick.

All is not lost, however, with the 'Hawks standing at 5-2, tied (with the 2017 team) with their best record in the first 7 games since the 2014, post-SB season. Not that we should ever use injuries as an excuse, but the Seahawks were really short-handed yesterday, with two starters, LT Duane Brown and RG D.J. Fluker, missing from the O-line, and with secondary stalwart Bradley McDougald and pass-rusher Ziggy Ansah missing from the D, not that Ansah has shown anything yet this season. McDougald's replacement at SS was rookie Marquise Blair, who played pretty well, suggesting, perhaps, that we may see him paired with McDougald when the latter returns from back spasms. Blair can play both safety positions, as can McDougald.

The pass rush continues to be a real weakness for the Seahawks. The addition of Ansah and Jadeveon Clowney was supposed to fix this, but there really hasn't been any sign of strength there so far in 2019. Jarran Reed, another guy counted on to provide push up the middle, may help once he gets back into form, having played only his first game back from suspension yesterday. Nonetheless, Pete Carroll should be concerned about the lack of pressure on opposing QBs.

With the trade deadline now just about a week away, I think the Seahawks need to get aggressive on this front. Other teams are jumping in to salvage help from the struggling teams (who have pretty much given up on 2019), and John Schneider and Pete Carroll need to move on this. There has been more trade activity across the league at this point in the season this year than in any previous year, and the Seahawks now know where they need help and must reach out and get it. Here are the areas where they need help and in which help is available:

(a) safety, (b) D-line, (c) receiver, (d) tight end.

Regarding safety, I don't feel that the Seahawks will make the playoffs (or at least go anywhere in the playoffs) with the safety tandem of Bradley McDougald and Tedric Thompson. As noted, rookie Marquise Blair may be one answer here, but I'd prefer to see a vet brought in to play either of the two safety positions, letting Blair learn the position behind the vets. On the D-line, they're pretty stout in the middle, but their pass rush, as noted, has been anemic so far. They're not really weak at receiver, but there will likely be receivers available; I'm thinking of A.J. Green from the Bengals and Emmanuel Sanders from the Broncos. Adding either one of these guys to the current pair of Tyler Lockett and D.K.Metcalf would give Russell Wilson a very solid receiving corps, and Wilson is just the guy to take advantage of another seasoned receiver. Similarly, adding a veteran sure-handed tight end to replace the injured Will Dissly may make sense--or they could wait for the return of Ed Dickson, after Game 8, if they feel he can make a difference.

The Seahawks need to rebound from this loss. Next Sunday's game in Atlanta is the purrfect opportunity for this, with the Falcons, at 1-6, looking very weak so far this season.

With reference to my previous thoughts about Seahawks' trades, they have addressed my first concern, that of safety, by trading for Detroit Lions safety Quandry Diggs. Diggs, 26 and a 6th round pick of the Lions, has been a starter for the Lions for a couple of years now and has played well, both at safety and nickelback, being also listed as a backup outside CB. He's a serviceable and versatile addition, although not really a top-tier one, and should strengthen the 'Hawks back end. It seems that the plan is to play him at SS, moving either Bradley McDougald or Marquise Blair to FS, replacing Tedric Thompson, who has been beaten deep a couple of times this season, a cardinal sin in the Pete Carroll canon. If the Seahawks can improve their pass rush and get better play from the back end , things should improve with the pass defense, which has been mediocre so far this season.

There's also a loose rumor about a possible trade for a TE (a need now with Will Dissly on IR), although this is pretty vague at the moment. The rumor involves Buccaneers' TE O.J. Howard, a 2017 1st-round pick, who has been used sparingly by Bruce Arians and may be in the coach's doghouse. This would be a great trade if it happens, with the trade deadline a week away, but I think this is a long-shot.

One possible trade at WR disappeared yesterday when the Broncos traded Emmanuel Sanders to the 49ers.

A rebound road win by the Seahawks, albeit against the lowly 1-6 Atlanta Hawks and albeit blowing a 24-0 halftime lead for a narrow 27-20 win which would have been even closer had the Hawks made their two field goals and the rather controversial fumble in the red zone. Seahawks have a decent 6-2 record in the halfway season mark but more work needs to be done in the second half if they hope to at least win the division.

Not an impressive performance against the Falcons despite the win. It's hard to understand why Pete Carroll took the team's foot off the gas in the second half, but rusty backup Matt Schaub burned the Seahawks for 460 yards passing in the game--just completely unacceptable.

It's true that some starters were missing--both starting CB Tre Flowers and SS Bradley McDougald (who played a few snaps, but was mostly on the bench). Once again, the pass rush was MIA, and Schaub was able to carve up the 'Hawks' secondary.

Unfortunately, the Seahawks did not acquire any help by the trade deadline (except for Quandre Diggs acquired last week) and now will have to finish the season with guys on hand. Surprisingly, FS Tedric Thompson, who played against the Falcons, has been put on IR today (which probably means the season), and, despite borderline play from Thompson in the first half of the season, this leaves the back end pretty thin. The three safeties that Carroll has on hand at the moment are Bradley McDougald, rookie Marquise Blair, and recent arrival Quandre Diggs. Not sure how Carroll will deploy these guys, as all three can play both safety positions. We should see McDougald and Blair next Sunday, I think, against the Bucs. Diggs may be held out another week to heal his hamstring. We'll see.

One addition on offense: TE Ed Dickson is back from IR following knee surgery and may play against the Bucs. This gives the Seahawks some depth now at TE, although I was hoping they'd trade for a top-tier TE like the Bucs' O.J. Howard.

In my opinion, the Seahawks' 6-2 record flatters the team. They've played more like a 4-4 or 5-3 team, and the second half of the schedule features better teams than the 'Hawks faced in the first half. A 4-4 second half would seem like a good bet (although it could be worse), which would leave them at 10-6 at the end of the regular season. Given the power in the NFC this season, 10-6 may not be good enough for a wild-card playoff spot.
