Re: NFL road rocky for Rourke after Patriots draft QB

The drafting of Milton (supposed cannon of an arm but with suspect other QB skills) does seem to make it even tougher for Nathan there. Even if the Pats un-load Zappe, there is still Brissett (journeyman type) with 1st rounder Maye in the wings and another draft pick (scouts there likely to hope for...

Re: Lions' receivers

I wasn't meaning to suggest the Lions should entertain a veteran presence / back-up receiver like Manny - much rather roll with young talent. And if it's just 6 receivers on the game roster (meaning just one back-up in Harty, or 2 if you include a KR with some receiver ability like Williams), that'...

Re: Lions' receivers

IMO - a really nice receiving corps has a good blend of speed, size, good route runners, very good hands = diversity - so not 4 or 5 burner smurfs with questionable hands, and not 4 or 5 slower possession types. Should be a very competitive TC to see who steps up to replace Whitehead as maybe the fi...

Re: Rourke now a NE Patriot

So, likely - vet journeyman Brissett (with way more losses than wins as an NFL starter) gets #1 to mentor and be a stop-gap till the 1st round draft pick is "ready" (hope they don't draft another Ryan Leaf). Leaving Nathan to battle it out with Zappe for #3 / PR guy? Not sure I like Rourke...

Re: 2024 CFL draft (Lion's picks)

Ok - so Ringland & States-McClean added to Greene, Bagayago & Rene = pretty decent collection/competition of Canadian secondary guys. They could maybe think of a National starting at both corner and safety on the D (doubtful, but maybe?)

Re: 2024 CFL draft (Lion's picks)

** edit ** - forgot about last year's draft pick Charlie Ringland who is a possible safety prospect - good college ball DB with some athletic testing #s - is he signed and going to TC? He might get a look at safety, and if they already have faith in him there, then might not need to draft another sa...

Re: 2024 CFL draft (Lion's picks)

Bagayago & Rene were both corners in college ball, and sure they might be able to play safety and maybe one will get a shot to win the job - which IMO should be wide-open for TC competition - and IMO that's what you use top draft picks for; potential starters in an obvious area of need. Safety i...

Re: 2024 CFL draft (Lion's picks)

The decision to award CFL teams that play the most Canadians (on O & D) is interesting, and IMO a good touch for the draft. The weaker teams still get rewarded with basic draft position, but that's a nice bonus for teams that care about Canadian talent. A number of the top 20 CFL Scouting Bureau...

Re: Lions' receivers

Jake Harty is a decent addition for depth - more just an ok possession receiver but also a real tough ST guy. I guess Dan Peterman is still around but maybe just a depth guy that they don't have much faith in - played very well for the Bombers when first in the league and has some speed, but maybe c...

Re: Thoughts on getting Stanback?

Stanback IMO is a potentially huge addition: IF he is still healthy and close to best CFL form (seemed like it late last season), and IF the Lions offence becomes more committed to a run game. The 2nd is the bigger IF - grasp what the Bombers & Argos have been able to do with big power backs ( O...

Re: Yikes! Lions 2024 potential free agents

I don’t want to spend another seven pages on this, because my stance on this is pretty clear after 20 years here. You aren’t getting NFL playing time, you aren’t making NFL money unless you are extraordinarily (he isn’t ) and sitting around in a press box not playing does no favors for your career ...

Re: Yikes! Lions 2024 potential free agents

Ooof. Some guys just never learn. Everything to gain, nothing to lose. I understand odds are not tilted in his favour but if he doesn't make their PS he'll have 9 CFL teams tripping over themselves to make him the highest paid CFL DE. Make the 53 this year and he makes USD$795K (CDN$1.1M) Make the ...

Re: Yikes! Lions 2024 potential free agents

The EE/Jonestown have just signed former Colarado star QB Steven Montez (bit of NFL camp experience) - pretty impressive NCAA ball resume that Jones would be swooning over. Makes sense for Jones to have plenty of TC competition at the key position in his desperate to win coming season, even with vet...

Re: Yikes! Lions 2024 potential free agents

I don't know if it deserves its own thread. It's almost like a free agent signing. BC has signed their 2021 1st rd pick (4th overall) DL Daniel Joseph. https://www.bclions.com/2024/01/17/defensive-lineman-2021-first-round-pick-daniel-joseph-signs-with-lions/ Interesting: I wondered if he would even...
