Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Are you able to convince all these owners that guaranteed losses is okay? Maybe for years?

Of course it's about the money. Maybe not ALL about money, but it's a big factor.

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Some good points guys.

The NHL timeline has their training camp starting early to mid July. That means the playoffs would start late July and probably wrap up end of September? 5 rounds!

I agree with your sentiments, but money talks. I really hope they do it, I just question the viability.

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

What a mess for the cfl. Assuming they can even play a partial season, by the time they start, they'll be competing with all 4 major league sports. Further, they don't have the revenue scale of these other leagues to make it make much sense, as much of the overhead costs are fixed. I don't know what...

Re: why is CFL interest so tepid in toronto?

Yeah what's up with 3 bye weeks? The schedule always looks so porous now. Seems like a couple times per season there's a month between home games.

Canada Day kick off... I like that.

Re: why is CFL interest so tepid in toronto?

There's a tremendous marketing partnership opportunity here. That is, to market Canadian pride and the CFL. America and the NFL are masterful at this. Why can't we do it?

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

It just occurred to me in discussion about the stadium and it's Corporation that they may have a whole world of of financial issues going forward. Where is their revenue coming from? Seems to me that they may have trouble surviving in their current incarnation. They have this hugely expensive infra...

Re: CFL Stadiums and Game Day Experiences

BC fan. I agree they might lose some long time, older season ticket holders. My dad likes the temperature at exactly 21 degrees. Mess with the thermostat at his home and you'll here about it, for days. I think the example of attendance falling at empire field has a lot to do with that it was in a ba...

Re: CFL Stadiums and Game Day Experiences

Bingo, David. It's just a tough sell. As a season ticket holder with lots of sports fan buddies, I often can't give my second mid field seat away. It's not that they are snobs (well maybe a little), it's just not an attractive event for most. Live football, without the ambience of open air, energize...

Re: why is CFL interest so tepid in toronto?

Back to the marketing fundamentals: the 4 Ps Product: the product is very good. Exciting, athletic, 2nd best football league in the world. Price: this can be debated. A family of 4 has to spend around $300 to $500 for a game, factoring in parking and food and depending on seats. That's a lot. There ...

Re: CFL Stadiums and Game Day Experiences

Still perplexed why the province decided to blow $600m on putting lipstick on the pig that is bc place. You'd have to think the lions and whitecaps would be far more successful in a 25,000 seat open air stadium. Yes we have rain, so cover the stands. I really enjoyed games at tempire field back in ...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Good brainstorming, David. I'm pretty sure, though, that concerts and other events would be next to impossible to include, as it's way out of the lions and even bc places scope. Ie $1200 seats to a rolling stones concert - that's run by live nation. They'd say "cfl? What's that?" The leagu...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

I'm surprised that pay per view in empty stadiums hadn't been an option on the table. Maybe it's not worth the cost of setting up on a temporary basis. The canucks did ppv back in the 2000s, was around $10 iirc. I suppose it's more profitable to include the game for free and increase viewership and ...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Basically you get a certificate that shows you supported the team through covid in 2020. Additional tickets would be discounted as a further perk, but they might be basically worthless anyways. A little disappointed with the lack of anything tangible, considering they are proposing to keep our $ tie...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

My crazy plan: 12 game season starting labour day. Season starts at 1 or 2 centralized locations. Maybe vancouver for west div and Toronto for east. These cities have a massive accommodation surplus right now and surely a deal can be worked out with a hotel chain or two. No fans at these centralized...
