Re: Speculation is over. No season in 2020.

I don't put too much blame on Ambrosie. I'm not sure that a 2020 season was ever viable for the CFL (barring a large infusion of cash). No other pro league needed such an infusion to operate. No other pro league has the challenges of the CFL. I do agree that his $150m pitch was perhaps not as well p...

Re: Speculation is over. No season in 2020.

Good article by Justin Dunk here: https://3downnation.com/2020/08/17/the-cfl-wanted-to-be-treated-different-than-every-other-canadian-citizen/ I think that one of the CFL's big challenges was getting their owners aligned. The community owned teams needed a loan to operate. Paying it back might have ...

Re: Eskimos: change your name

If I was trying to sell a product and even 5% of a particular market found the product name to be offensive, I would consider changing it. There has been more than enough evidence available around for years, if not decades, that a significant number of Inuit don't like this name and don't like being...

Re: Eskimos: change your name

I suspect the name will be Empire. Personally not a fan of empires. Not sure of the relevance to Edmonton other than it was a part of an empire, just like every corner of the globe? And starts with the letter E.

I prefer elk. Majestic animals. Are there many elk in Edmonton?

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Fair enough BC FAN. I think this will be a hard sell. On the one hand, the CFL does support jobs and there is a cultural component. On the other, it is non-essential and relies on US players making way more than most of the jobs that are supported. It would be cheaper for the government just to pay ...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

I wouldn't expect many if any US players to come up here for $2000/month. But should taxpayers pay many times that amount for them to come play for a few games? Subsidising Canadian businesses employing Canadian workers is one thing, paying foreign workers for essential services is obviously needed,...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

I am wondering how this proposal deals with US player salaries. Is the idea that Canadian taxpayers would pay Mike Reilly a few hundred thousand to come to Canada to play football for 3 months? Because that would be hard to justify. I'm not against using federal funds to pay foreign workers in certa...

Re: Eskimos: change your name

Not a great image for a league that wants to celebrate diversity and attract a younger generation of fans: https://www.cbc.ca/kidsnews/post/nfl-redskins-reviewing-name-cfl-eskimos-should-be-next-inuk-teen-says It’s a swear word, teen says Akutaq said she considers Edmonton’s team name a swear word. ...

Re: Eskimos: change your name

It's long overdue. Only one reason to use racially divisive names in this era: you are racist. Edmonton CFL team is national embarrassment.

Re: If No Season will the CFL fold

I will never understand the thinking that having "only" 159 cases of a deadly highly infectious virus in our midst is cause to relax. We should eradicate the virus and get back to normal. That is how we can save the CFL, not to mention public health and the economy. Oh well, obviously I am in the m...

Re: If No Season will the CFL fold

There are almost 30,000 confirmed active cases in Canada at the moment (who knows how many actual cases). There is no way to safely host in-person sporting events in Canada in these circumstances. I don't blame Braley for not wanting to fund a money losing venture but also don't support his approach...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

Being on an island provides several advantages if you are trying to eradicate a disease. The place in essence becomes it's own quarantine and control of the coming and goings are quite a bit easier when you physically separate from all other land mass. Here on Vancouver Island, we have had cases bu...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/13/sport/rugby-crowds-highlanders-otago-gatland-spt-intl/index.html Contrast that with this surprising event in NZ. With no new cases for over 20 days and only 22 total deaths, they decided to allow attendance (with no social distancing or masks) at a 20,000 fan even...

Re: COVID-19 : How it could impact Lions/CFL

There is no chance that the Lions will get permission to have 10,000 people in BC Place in 2020. It would be reckless and out of sync with our new reality. Not sure why Braley would waste time on this idea. I've mentioned before but would just reiterate that many players would not come for a half se...
