Any chance Lulay will "retire", take a coaching position with the Lions, and then "un-retire" once he is healthy enough to be on the active roster again? It would allow the Lions to sign a healthy back-up in the interim without wasting cap space or a roster spot on Lulay, who according to James Sybulski and Davis Sanchez (The Waggle podcast) is not going to be ready to play when the season starts.
Isn't that what Andy Fantuz did last year in Hamilton? SO there is precedent
It's entirely possible. Like Lulay he was a pending free agent thus didn't need to "retire". His playing contract simply expired and he later signed to be part of Hamilton's player development group. To be honest I was surprised that Fantuz did come back. I suppose with Lulay the question is when will he be ready? Fantuz suffered his knee injury in the second to last weekend of the 2016 season and signed back on to the Hamilton PR in mid-September 2017. Comparitively speaking Lulay suffered his injury 2 months earlier in the season. Both injuries were ACL tears. There's no way of comparing recovery time but if Lulay's is similar to Fantuz then he could be ready to resume practicing by mid-July. Could be one of those things where the Lions and Lulay wait until just before training camp to determine how to proceed. They should have a pretty good idea by then as to when he might be ready to go........that's assuming he definitely wants to continue playing.

Here's some hopeful (and honest) thoughts from Travis, as per usual.

Shaq Johnson has extended his contract.

http://3downnation.com/2018/01/19/lions ... q-johnson/

Here is an updated list of remaining Lion free agents.

BAZZIE, Alex
CLARKE, Adrian
DHILLON, Jaskaran
FABIEN, Kirby
FENNER, Chandler
FORDE, Maxx
JACKSON, Anthony (Buddy)
JONES, Andrew
LULAY, Travis
MENARD, David
MOORE, Nick
PURIFOY, Loucheiz
ROH, Craig
STEWARD, Hunter
TURNER, Bryant
YELL, Ronnie

I am personally hopeful Fenner, Forde, Jackson, Lulay, Menard, Moore, Steward and Yell return. That’s 8 out of 16 remaining, seems like pretty decent odds.

I'd replace Jackson's name with Purifoy's. I know he and Bazzie are testing NFL waters but per Wally the other night he says the phone calls from NFL clubs requesting permission to work out our pending FAs have pretty much dried up meaning most may have whatever offers they are going to get already on the table.

Of the other 8 I doubt Clarke, Dhillon, Jones or Turner will see any interest from Hervey. I'm not that fussy on Jackson. OK for depth but at 29 in March I think they can get younger and better via free agency. Even Bazzie I'm unsure of. He didn't overly impress me when he came back last year. Some flashes but overall not looking like the sort of difference maker one would hope for.

Don't like this. Maybe they have their sights on Konar in FA?

Glad that the Lions and Hunter agreed to terms. Hunter is a vital clog on the offensive line.

Hervey told Steve Ewen he was reluctantly following through with a commitment to Awe that was made by "someone who is no longer with the organization."
Just after anniversary of Bighill departure, Lions lose linebacker Micah Awe to NFL

Sounds like Ryan Rigmaiden to me. Still, it's hard to believe Wally didn't know about it. Unless this explains why Rigmaiden is no longer with the organization.
