There is no way to know. Sometimes the most important thing in life is the effort, not the outcome. The world is full of heroes, not the famous types, just ordinary people who spend their time as volunteers, work in jobs that are meant to help people (often for crap pay). They do it for a lifetime of service and maybe, if they are lucky they make a difference in someones life and they actually find out about it. More often than not, it isn't he case. The absence of knowing doesn't stop people from trying. It is the act, not the story that moves them and in the end that is all that really matters.

In light of events in Nice tonight, it makes acts of kindness and generosity even more precious and important. If our world is to fall to violence, hatred and intolerance, I would much rather go down defending the goodness in people rather than embracing the bitterness that comes with senseless animosity.
