Because the D Line performs valiantly, in Wally's view the pass rush is excellent. Not in the view of some fans, nor the statisticians, nor the OCs around the league.

Totally!! It's not the GM's job to break down tape for the media. Wally is not a coach anymore or at least shouldn't be. Wally is also fining players for dead ball fouls - not a GM's job either. Makes one wonder what else Wally is involved with.TheLionKing wrote:Sums up what is wrong with the Lions IMO. For so many seasons no one knew that Wally ran the short yardage offensive unit that was imfamous for getting stuffed on third and one. What the heck Wally was doing coaching any offensive unit is mind boggling. Of course everyone blamed Chap when we didn't make the third down gamble. But then again, we blamed Chap when the running game was not working and Chap didn't even design the run game - it was Dorazio - Chap only got to call the running plays but not design them or the run blocking. Cwazy stuff but we'd had a lot of crazy stuff with Wally and not just his horrible game day calls either.
Wally screwed up enough things with our defense to the point that he alsmost drove Dave Ritchie crazy during games interfering, without knowing what he was interfering with. It was Barrin Miles who finally asked Wally to back off. Heck Ritchie would have a blitz called and Wally would be yelling at the defense to back off.
Wally's success in the CFL was mostly due to his role as a manager coach. He set the tone, demanded of his assistants and was very lucky in Calgary that he had Roy Shivers and a huge budget and in B.C. he had Ackles and Obie. Wally hired some very good assistant coaches and they did all the x and o's work. Wally as a coach, couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag, dispite his coaching reputation.
So I wish he would not get involved in this kind of topic. Christ, he thought Butler was an excellent defensive end.
Here are my KEYS TO THE GAME
1. GET AWAY FROM WALLY SYSTEMS
The spread offence and the passive zone defense are Wally faves from his old coaching days and the offence of John Hufnagel when he was the OC in Calgary in the 90's. They were successful then but football has changed - only Wally hasn't. What brought success back then doesn't bring success now. If we are going to be successful offensively we need to run a more pro style offence with spread and West Coast influences in it. That's what Chap is doing and he was an old spread guy at one time. That is also what Kent Austin is doing and he was an old spread offence guy too.
On defense, the name of the game is aggressive, attack football and complex schemes that are hard for quarterbacks to read. Today' good offensive coaches, if they have a decent quarterback and recievers can slice and dice simple passive zone defenses, like the one Mark Washington uses.
PASS THE FOOTBALL
We're first in the CFL in protecting the quarterback and third in rushing. Our offensive line is opening holes for the run and giving Lulay time to throw. However, defenses are cheating more and more, to stop our run. Harris is a marked man. We need to create play action, especially on first down and be successful with it. We need more motion in our offence and we need to use our tight end properly. We're at the bottom of the CFL in passing - Lulay is too often inaccurate and doesn't hit his recievers on the break with the throw being made too late. But we need to give him help and use his strengths by moving him around in the pocket and rolling him out as well. Lulay is at his best as a double threat quarterback and so is our offence.
DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
You don't have to sack the quarterback but you have to create pressure. The difference between a quarterback who has too much time and one that is hurried can be immense. We gotta find a way to get this done. Our defnese sucks for a lot of reasons but it always starts up front.
"When I went to Catholic high school in Philadelphia, we just had one coach for football and basketball. He took all of us who turned out and had us run through a forest. The ones who ran into the trees were on the football team". (George Raveling)

Sol-E's injury could be just what our defence needs, or should I say what our defensive coordinator needs. Nothing against Sol-E, but with him being out Bighill moves to the middle linebacker position and will not be free to be 25 yards downfield covering receivers and running backs that the rest of our backfield could not or would not tackle. Keeping Bighill at home should tighten up things in the middle and make it much harder for teams to get 10-15 yards on first down plays. Now hopefully we will see Bighill going towards the QB instead of in the opposite direction for a change. The rest of our secondary will have to step up and realise that Bighill is not going to be racing downfield to save the day on every play.

This defense is the worse I have ever seen the last decade, like Swiss cheese up the middle, no one to back up Bighill

Remember when we used to have a formidable defence? Way too easy.
