LU is reporting that a deal has been reached on radio rights for the club, but it doesn't sound like Braley was too enamored with the offer. Whether the station came around or not is unknown, but it represented the best exposure for the club in a crowded sports marketplace.

"It may well only be a check mark on a to-do list where there were few other logical alternatives, but the Lions have made a big off-season step forward nonetheless by finalizing a two-year radio broadcast rights package.

The team will be back on TSN 1040, two sources confirmed, which may have been the only logical pairing available but was on rocky footing as late as the start of this week.

The Lions had been looking at alternatives to commercial radio, including streaming games, buying airtime to produce their own broadcasts and yes, had gone to the extent where David Braley had commissioned a feasibility study of purchasing his own Lower Mainland station, such as Redskins owner Dan Snyder once did to get his team’s games on the air to his satisfaction.

In the end though, sanity prevailed. The radio deal won’t ensure Braley will likely be ensured of a profit, but what he will get is the radio station’s gianormous production and promotional resources, no small thing when the games of just about every other sports entity in the area are already on the Bell Media network of two local stations.

Scott Rintoul, who took over from Rick Ball behind the play-by-play microphone last September, can plan his summer schedule, as can Giulio Caravatta. Now all the Lions have to do is ensure listeners they have a healthy starting quarterback for the start of training camp."

So this means Rintoul removes the interim part of his PBP title?
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

It great the Lions will be on 1040 for the next two seasons! Now all they need is a top play-by-play announcer and host for their pregame and post-game shows. NFL junkies Moj and C. Burns are wearing a bit thin.

Totally agree JH. Not since the days of Rick Dhaliwal would I say 1040 have had a true Lions/CFL insider who had great contacts and could break stories. I thought Rintoul could be that guy given his football background and also is a CIS assistant coach but has been around long enough to know that isn't going to happen and don't think he is on the same level as Rick Ball for play by play.

Not sure what kind of arrangement the Whitecaps have with Pete Schaad but that's exaclty what the Lions require. Excellent at play by play who also has a passion for the team and the league. The Lions may need to work that position into their public/media relations department like so many pro sports teams do.

I noticed this line in the CFL/Bell Media press release today on the sale of the Argos:
Bell Media's TSN and RDS sports networks have exclusive media rights to all CFL pre-season and regular season games, the Playoffs, and the Grey Cup. The agreement includes TV broadcast, digital properties as well as radio rights for TSN Radio stations in Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and Vancouver.
Was the TSN deal for the Lions' radio rights pre-ordained as part as part of the league's contract with Bell/TSN? Did the Lions have any option to shop for offers from other local radio stations?

Edm radio rights belong to CHED, even though there's a TSN 1260 affiliate there. Same with Wpg on CJOB instead of TSN 1290. So prob not. (Cgy, Ham and Ssk don't have TSN affiliates.)

SJ Roc is correct: Radio deals are separate from TV. Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Hamilton broadcast their games on Corus Stations. Saskatchewan is on CKRM, which I believe is owned by Harvard Broadcasting. Same with the NHL. On a side note, many were confused our station was still broadcasting Canucks games after Rogers ponied up for the TV package.. Separate deals for radio as well.

Update: TSN announced today the launch of TSN 1150 in Hamilton. It includes a multi year deal to become host broadcaster for the Ticats.. This is great for the network and that market.

The good news is that the fans of the NFL team in the GTA haven't been born yet.

Speaking of TSN, they have extended their TV deal with the league, originally set to expire after the 2018 season, three more years through the 2021 campaign.

Story and video here: http://www.tsn.ca/video/cfl-tsn-rds-ext ... n-1.294289

There will also now be a weekly Thursday Night Football game through the summer portion of the schedule — which they've pretty much always had anyway, but now it will have added branding and promotion a la Friday Night Football. If you think we won't be hosting an occasional one of those, keep dreaming in 4K. We already are this year (Aug 6 & 20), and I don't expect this to change anytime soon with this development.

CFL, TSN and RDS Extend Successful Broadcast Agreement through to 2021 – Bell Media sports networks extend their long-term partnership with Canadian Football League
May 28, 2015

TORONTO (May 28, 2015) – The Canadian Football League (CFL) and Bell Media’s TSN and RDS announced today they have extended their long-term, successful partnership through to 2021.

As part of the extension, TSN and RDS continue to hold exclusive media rights to all CFL games, including pre-season, regular season, playoffs, and the iconic celebration of Canadian sports that is the Grey Cup. In addition to broadcast and digital rights, the deal features exclusive radio rights to the Grey Cup for Bell Media’s Grey Cup Radio Network.

“The CFL’s partnership with TSN and RDS has been central to our growth and momentum and we look forward to working together to reach new and even bigger audiences,” said Jeffrey L. Orridge, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League.

“The CFL continues to rank as one of Canada’s leading sports properties,” said Phil King, President – CTV, Sports, and Entertainment Programming. “With many new stadiums opening across the league and a new era beginning in Toronto, this is truly an exciting time for the CFL. We are thrilled to extend our partnership and to continue to shine the spotlight on this beloved Canadian sports institution for years to come.”

TSN has been broadcasting CFL games since 1986 and RDS has been a CFL broadcaster since 1989. In 2008, TSN and RDS became the exclusive broadcasters of the CFL and the Grey Cup. Since that time, the networks have established new audience records for CFL broadcasts.

TSN and RDS’s current agreement with the CFL was scheduled to expire at the end of the 2018 season.

We've been lucky to have had Rick Ball and Scott as pxp callers in this market.

Need I remind you of the voice that came before them on another station at another time who actually had NW promo him as a "hall of fame broadcaster"? The guy who was loose with down and distance and couldn't tell a 6 from an 8 or a 9? I could go on...

Scott knows the game, gives back to it, and I can also say from way back when he's a good guy to work with. All of that counts for something in my books.
