Random topic. Hopefully generates some discussion.
I was thinking today about how special this team is in the way most players on the team conduct themselves on the field. There's a lot of character on this team IMO.
For the purposes of this thread I define character as:
- Supporting teammates
- Putting the team before themselves.
- Respecting the opponent
and most of all
- Having the drive/passion/will/want to win.
Now to stir the pot, who do you think has the least amount of character on the team?
I'll say my pick: Anthony Reddick. I admire the way he plays, and think he's an asset to the team purely from a talent point of view. Does he really WANT to win? Not so sure. Do losses bug him? Perhaps not. Bit of a headcase IMO, just from observations. I could be way off, I could be right. Gut instinct though. Mostly all speculation, but that is what we do.
And I will say it is nitpicking to single Reddick out, especially on a team filled with character guys. First player that came to mind. Unfair? Probably.
Now your turn..
Player with least amount of character

Khalif Mitchell ?
Far be it from me to be a cheerleader, but is this topic really necessary? Speculating on which member of the roster has the least amount of character? Really?
Fault guys for their actions on the field, certainly. How they treat fans? Sure. But do we really need to fill the down period of the offseason with a "who's the biggest jerk to his coworkers" contest?

Hmmm....while I agree with your point, I hate censorship on a topic that can be debated, so I would rather just let this topic do its due course and die. Why he selected Reddick is beyond me though, and I can't think of one that comes to mind, other than the now long departed Messam.cromartie wrote:Far be it from me to be a cheerleader, but is this topic really necessary? This team is built on character, but I would say the closest thing has been Mitchell...I am very interested to see how our DLine resolves itself this year...at 2 guys will be gone.

I can't participate in this when we are talking about the active roster, now maybe if you were talking players who have since departed, that might be ok but only in the realm of how they were at the time, not any indication of who they are now. Remember, that for the most part, we are talking about young men from a wide variety of backgrounds. Young persons can and do often act stupidly and it is a combination of youth, inexperience and in the case of athletes, being told again and again that their fecal matter is somehow superior to everybody else s. Not to disregard what they might bring to the situation personally but people can change. For athletes, the spotlight is bright for a time and then it is gone. After that happens, people who might have tolerated rude, boorish behaviour often don't anymore and those who display it either have to mend their ways or find themselves alone.
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.
Since a topic on which player has the least amount of character is unpopular, how about reversing the purpose and talk about players with the MOST character instead?Rammer wrote:Hmmm....while I agree with your point, I hate censorship on a topic that can be debated, so I would rather just let this topic do its due course and die. Historically, I'd say any Lions who were nominated as the representative for the Tom Pate Memorial Award automatically qualifies as one with lots of character since the criteria is awarded to a player with outstanding sportsmanship and someone who has made a significant contribution to his team, his community and Association. The award winner must display these qualities such that it distinguishes him from his peers. So far there's six who have won as a Lion:
2006 - Mark Washington
2003 - Steve Hardin
1999 - Jamie Taras
1992 - Danny Barrett
1989 - Matt Dunigan
1986 - Tyrone Crews
With these winners, I think this goes to show that having good character doesn't immediately make one extremely popular with the fans as in the end, winning is probably more important than having good character. When ranking the most popular Lions offensive linemen, I'd say very few fans would choose Steve Hardin. Danny Barrett was certainly very unpopular in 1992 with his 3-15 season and was no replacement at all for Doug Flutie as starting QB. Dunigan was more popular but only spent 2 seasons with the team. Jamie Taras is popular, but mostly because of his seniority with the team and with his good character, then fittingly he's suitable as the Director of Community Relations.

And IF individual characters and personalities are synonymous, check out this older thread about the most 25 BC Lions personalities according to the Vancouver Sun:

For the record, I too find this topic odious and completely unnecessary and would love to see it die, which is why I shouldn't be bumping it up in the queue.korey&dante4ever wrote:I could be way off, I could be right. Gut instinct though. Mostly all speculation, but that is what we do.

Unless there are tangible and proven examples of a guy lacking character, why bring this up at all? We're supposed to be Lions fans, why single out a guy out based on "speculation" and "gut instinct?" This is a man's character we're calling into question here; that's pretty sacred turf.

This is a thread that could get really nasty. Even just naming Anthony Reddick and Khalif Mitchell for least amount of character is not nice. These guys are B.C. Lions. They have contributed to a Grey Cup win. They have withstood the test of time, and many other challenges, in their time here. They are loved by their teammates. Their coaches have chosen them to be on the team. They have their fans. Why diss them? Fair play?
Some of the greatest players in sport are selfish, rude jerks. I would not put Anthony or Khalif in that bracket. Has Anthony ever been rude to a fan? Has Khalif? Is immaturity or emotional instability the same as low character? Is being a quiet, hard hitting football player a sign of low character?
One of Wally's strengths has been choosing young men of sterling character. I recall Wally when Wally was dealing with Khalif's situation with the league. Wally said the first thing he was going to do was give Khalif a big hug.
We got some indications that our veteran DBs were ticked off at Cauchy. Does that make him low character? I don't think so.
I was considering shuffling this thread off to Buffalo, and then saw Rammer say to let it go.
For the record, I like Anthony Reddick. Anthony, you have your fans. For the record I like Khalif Mitchell.
It cannot be easy living in the public eye.
Just one story ... Anyone ever hear anything bad about Sherko Haji-Rasouli? I don't think so. All I ever heard was how at his apartment building he would help any of the elderly at the front entrance, taking their belongings and packages to the elevator, et cetera. That is how I see our Lions. Virtually without fail.
Anthony
Khalif
Oh how about that Travis guy? Boy is he ever rude! I hear he says Oregon is so much better than B.C. And that Geroy guy that we shipped off to Regina. I bet he never did anything for the community.

Sigh, thought it might get this reaction. My bad? The point was that the team is stocked with high character 'good guys' that its difficult to single out guys that arent '100% on board'.
As for reddick, i didnt say he had low character. Just the least. Oops? Just IMO.
Anyway, delete thread if you must

And as for attacking his character. Its purely from a football point of view, not personal character
Just like theres a difference between football IQ and real life IQ, theres a difference between football character and real life character.

I'm a little disappointed with this thread, too. When I saw the title before clicking in, I thought it meant character in the sense of the type of guy who's quotable with the media, a guy who the media love to inteview because you never know when he might have something to say to stir the pot that would "sell papers" (or I suppose pageclicks would be the more appropriate metric nowadays). Lacking this type of character is not necessarily a bad thing; kickers often (but not always — hello, Troy Westwood) fall into this category.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
Agree that this topic is in very poor taste . How do you slag one of our players who you cheer for ? How was it determined that Reddick is of low character ? What is that judgement based on? There's a saying " if you got nothing good to say , better to say nothing at all " along with a few others . This topic really is nothing more than gossip .
I think if Reddick was of low character our coaches would have cut him loose already . Like wise Mitchell .
