I think the Lions will have to look hard at that list for O linemen. At least one. We can't build a really potent O-line from draft picks alone.

SEARS, Johnny DB Eastern Michigan I
DYAKOWSKI, Peter OL Louisiana St. N
PORTER, Quinton QB Boston College I
FOLEY, Ricky DL York N
PERRETT, Jeff OT Tulsa N

While centre Marwan Hage would be a good pickup, I don't think he'd leave Hamilton. Some may scoff at Porter but the Lions may need a backup QB if Reilly leaves...and Quinton has all the tools, he just needs some polishing (although the Lions rarely sign a castoff QB). Foley is a ratio-changer. While Ricky was misused in Toronto, he gets consistent pass pressure and will probably sign for less after a poor season. The Lions should load up on OL as they may need two new tackles next season. Always liked Johnny Sears. :ref:

Wally has usually done well locking up his pending free agents well before the market. Not this time (as of early December).

I sure hope he has an inside track on re-signing Gore should a decent NFL offer not come his way. I can think of at least five teams — Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Montreal, Toronto — where he would be their No. 1 non-import option at receiver and still has a ton of upside.

Have to think Yurichuk will look for more playing time elsewhere and not sure how badly the Lions want to retain Muamba given he has already rejected two offers.

Lions are going to be spending a lot of their SMS on the offensive tackle positions if they are lucky enough to re-sign Olayioye. Could see a team like the T-Cats interested in Elimmian to give their dreadful defence a spark.

Wouldn't be surprised if Vancouver College grad Joe Epple is on Wally's radar signing. Starting guard with Argos who is just 25.

Highly doubt Foley would be interested in returning to the West Coast

Put it this way, if the Argos had continued their wretched stretch in losing 5 of 6 and faded away into the night, there's a good possibility he'd be moving back to BC. His gf is from here, I really think he enjoyed playing here, still has some friends on the team, has respect for Wally and Bene AND is not thrilled by the way he's been deployed by Chris Jones.

However, now that the Argos are Grey Cup Champs (still can't used to saying that!), he will stay. His tearful post-game comments indicate to me he bleeds double-blue.

Foley wanted to play in front of his family and they watched him win the 100th Grey Cup at home. He's done that. Now he might want to do what's best for his career...and that's probably not in C. Jones defence...and for a substantial paycut in Toronto (from his reported $150k salary). A rush end in Stubler's defence is a much better fit. Could be he loves being an Argo now, but maybe he could change his mind?

Ha ha ...

Whoever talks to him last gets Foley. Just get his goldang signature on a piece of paper. Athlete's words do not connote much of a commitment, in some cases.

He could help us. So could Joe Eppele.

Hey, if Joe Eppele was a gangster, would his nickname be Joey Apples?

How about an O-line featuring Joe Eppele and Peter Dyakowski at guards between a returning Angus Reid at centre? That would be three local guys side by side who all played their high school football at Vancouver College. The Lions and the Irish would get great PR from that move, especially with the ever-quotable Reid being just a step from retirement. Canada's smartest person (Dyakowski) could fill the void for quote-hungry reporters.

Why do they call them free agents? Its when the teams really have to spend the big bucks???

Looks like quite an interesting list. In order to get other teams FA's a team not only hase to outbid the other teams but that just leaves less money for the FA's you have on your team.

Is this a bigger 'class' (or number) than usual. Obviously some will not attract much on the market and/or have to retire. It just seems large. I wonder how it compares to other years.........?

The answer is "not many."

Gore, Olafioye, and Elimimian have all said "no thanks, I want to try the NFL first"

Reilly has said "no thanks - I want to play on a team where I have a chance to start."

Muamba has said, "no thanks - your offer isn't good enough" (2x).

So it really comes down to Hameister-Ries, who needs back surgery and Yurichuk, whose status is unknown but is not a starter.

The only players we were able to re-sign were J.R. LaRose, Jason Arakgi, Joash Gesse, and Justin Conn, none of whom are every down players.

Surprised about Muamba playing hardball (if he is), I thought he had a pretty weak season overall, with a couple of good games thrown in. He might become a good safety, but IMO he isn' t there yet. Guess it all comes down to what he feels he's worth, but frankly I don't see a bidding war for him based on this years body of work.

I agree. He sure seemed the weak link in our secondary throughout the season. The book on him (at least as far as this forum is concerned) seems to be that he's very talented, but still learning. I'm not sure I agree with that, but I guess we'll know in a few more years. I always find it interesting when marginal players decide to test the NFL. Rolly Lumbala did it a couple of years ago--with predictable results. How do these guys get such big heads on the basis of their often mediocre play in the CFL? Or is it something else?

Most pro athletes have an inflated idea of their self worth.
