Yeah, it didn't make sense any other way. Seemed like nothing to do with the possible return of Solo.
B.C. Lions coach punts rookie Brandon Peguese to Tiger-Cats

Defensive lineman dealt after arguing with players, coach

BY LOWELL ULLRICH, THE PROVINCE SEPTEMBER 10, 2012 10:00 PM

Import defensive lineman Brandon Peguese is on his way to Hamilton, not because of his work on the field but because of his comments to fellow players and head coach Mike Benevides.

There are few employees who have survived repeatedly challenging management or their work environment and Brandon Peguese discovered he is not going to be one of them.

The rookie import defensive lineman was traded for a conditional draft pick Monday to the free-falling Hamilton Tiger-Cats as a result of a series of transgressions that had nothing to do with his work on special teams and everything to do with his comportment.

The last straw, but by no means the only incident, came during an altercation during practice Thursday. Peguese had a verbal exchange with head coach Mike Benevides after being pulled away from other players.

According to eyewitnesses, Peguese also repeatedly challenged assistant coach Kelly Bates during a special-teams drill and at other stages in the workout.

The club had become increasingly concerned in recent weeks that Peguese, who had an argument with teammates after the Lions loss in Montreal, was also becoming a negative influence on some of the younger players, though he had support from some veterans.

But it may not be much of a stretch to suggest the 24-year-old had a polarizing effect not seen since the 2007 season with cornerback Dennis Mitchell, who played five games for the Lions before being released and subsequently signing with Hamilton.

“There’s a certain code of conduct. You don’t have to love everybody. You don’t even have to like everybody. But there has to be a mutual respect and unfortunately that does affect your team,” said general manager Wally Buono, who inferred the Lions also receive negotiation list rights to a Hamilton player as part of the deal.

“This was brought forward not just by us but the players.”

Peguese, who had spent time with two NFL clubs and made no secret with teammates of his desire to return south of the border, suggested last week he might have become too animated after the practice argument.

“When you’re out here and playing, there’s a certain mentality that goes along with this sport, and sometimes it’s hard to turn off,” he said. “Sometimes people get just a little riled up.”

Peguese was partly responsible for improvement on special teams kick coverage but the Lions will have other options to fill the roster spot left by the lineman, who joined the club late at training camp this year.

Linebacker Solomon Elimimian would be an obvious choice. The CFL rights to the former top rookie revert to the Lions Thursday but the club is hoping he will report for the start of the practice week so as to make him part of the game-planning for Saturday’s home contest against the Toronto Argonauts.

If Elimimian is not back, his roster status won’t be determined until next week and the 25-year-old, who has not drawn a football paycheque since last year’s Grey Cup game, will be sidelined another week.

B.C. also has a surplus of receiving help with Geroy Simon and Kierrie Johnson in a position to return. But the likely move is to bring defensive tackle Maurice Evans back into the rotation in place of a player who had become a concern for many teammates.

“A lot of guys can’t believe some of the things [Peguese] said and did,” one Lions player said last week.

According to LU, Peguese got into it with several teammates and coaches, including Mike Benevides and Kelly Bates. That's too much of a disruption for the coaches to tolerate from a rotational player and special teamer, especially with Maurice Evans and Solomon Elimimian in line for his roster spot.

Peguese was a line walker, IMO. Obviously stepped on or over it a few times during games. This either drew flags ( :thdn: ) or angry opponents ( ). Message obviously sent, and its for the team as much as Peguese.

IMO, players like Messam and now possibly Peguese, often go on to have good seasons elsewhere. Leaves broadcasters fodder for the 'why did BC let him go?' comments. Well, sometimes a player just wouldn't have succeeded without being sent a message but being cut/traded. I think the players culture in the BC Lions organization sounds/seems to be one of the best in the CFL. I know it hasn't always been. Sometimes the outlaw/rebels (1994?) succeed but I think the kind of culture the Lions have now is far more likely to lead to success on/off the field, IMO............

(Hmmm..... after reading the Fifth Quarter, learned that Toronto was one of Buono's other possible trading partners. As Ullrich noted, it was a little too soon to be seeing an ex-team-mate when these two teams battle it out Saturday afternoon....)

The Lions did the right thing...you cannot tolerate this kind of behaviour on a TEAM...we aren't the Ti Cats, we are the LIONS!

Obie has followed the principal of winning at all costs in Hamilton and has put together a band of misfits that aren't pulling together, this (IMO) is the only reason why Hamilton is on the wrong side of the W/L ledger...it takes continuity, patience, and teamwork to become a champion and no one in Hamilton is staying around long enough for this to happen...

I mean Obie shipped off Bruce to us because his name was no longer fashionable in the CFL, and Bruce only helped settle down our offence and help us win a Grey Cup...that's pretty fashionable to me...

So getting rid of Peguese is not only the right thing to do, it was the ONLY thing to do for a championship team...you add players to the mix who can contribute and become part of this family...if not, they can always have a home in Hamilton...

Evans looked very good in his ONE game thus far, and with his size AND speed, he should be a good addition to STs as well. We will be fine!

So it appears that Peguse was traded for other reasons other than just opening up a roster spot for Eliminian. I preferred Rajon Henley in that defensive end spot rather than Peguse but Peguse was a better special teams player and that part of our game needed shoring up at the time and it was not Henley;s strength.

Obviously Peguese's attitude was a negative element on a team that really plays for each other. I still don;t like the notion of players being involved in going to management regarding a teammate. I'm sure Benevedes had enough information himself.

The trade opens up a spot for Eliminian and he will play against Toronto if he gets here on Thursday. If not, it will likely be Maruice Evans who plays and he looked good when he had his opportunity.

Reading some of the things that are coming out now it seems obvious the guy was a cancer or fast becoming one. Good on the team for dealing with it in a professional manner. Life goes on and we live to win the West.

I wouldn't think that the Lions activate Elimimian on Thursday, unless he is in the dressing room this week for CFL adjustment. He is more likely to begin next game, getting in a full weeks practice. His agent should know by now if there is any NFL interest after the first weeks action/injuries. In retrospect though, his agents fight for the extra 10 days on an NFL waiver only cost Elimimian a game or two paycheque...dumbass.

Sol E would be replacing Peguese's role on the team as a ST'er and situational pass rush specialist. If Evans is also activated, then Shell would have to go. No way the Lions rip apart their league-leading defence to get Sol E on the field for a couple games. His agent said last week that Sol's commitment is with the NFL next season. If that tryout fails, then he'd probably sign with the highest CFL bidder next September.

Sol E's agent may just be posturing, but if not and Wally can't get him on a long term contract, then I see Sol E. as a rental player who can have a huge impact on ST and spot duty on D for the rest of the season.

Is there any chance we'll get a decent player in return for Peguese? Does "future considerations" mean anything?

It does and its the smart play by Wally...who we get in return will be determined by how much and how well Pegeuse plays in Hamilton...so ultimately its a win-win situation for us, and a potential risk for Hamilton.

Lionis also received a neg list player, which may or may not pan out. I am once again finding myself wondering why the CFL doesn't offer up the neg list for each team, Lions rarely even offer a tidbit to LU or 6Beamers.
