$500,000-US bonus awaits Wake in NFL

B.C. knows it can't compete in bidding for outstanding defensive end

By Lowell Ullrich, The Province

January 9, 2009 9:00 AM

Monstrous defensive end Cam Wake, who played two CFL seasons almost in a league of his own, is about to completely outgrow its relevant salary structure.

It has been nearly two weeks since the two-time defensive player of the year with the B.C. Lions has been eligible to sign an option-year NFL contract, but time has had no downward effect whatsoever on his market value.

Wake has told friends the signing bonus being discussed at present is fast approaching the $500,000 US mark, a staggering sum by CFL standards that would more than ensure he will not simply be training-camp fodder. Some 12 NFL teams have shown varying degrees of interest, with the Tennessee Titans believed to be the club discussing the biggest offer.

The signing bonus might represent the amount the Lions have to spend under the CFL's salary management system in order to extend current contracts, sign all their remaining free agents and make upgrades for the coming season by plucking players off the open market.

But it won't all be spent on one player, even if Wake might deserve to become the highest-paid defender in league history after recording 39 sacks in 38 games.

Coach Wally Buono said after meeting with Wake and his parents during Grey Cup week in Montreal that he would not make an offer to the

26-year-old, because there was no way the club could be competitive. In addition to a signing bonus, Wake would make $310,000 US as rookie in the NFL. By the end of the month, when it is expected Wake will formally plot his future career path, the Lions almost certainly will be proven correct.

"Obviously we're never going to say we're not interested in re-signing him," Lions personnel co-ordinator Neil McEvoy said Thursday, "but they've got some firm offers that they are weighing against each other that I don't think we're going to able to [compete].

"Until he goes through the process, you really don't know what's going to happen. But he's getting top-two [second-round] draft-pick money."

The process was slowed to some degree due to several NFL head coaching firings last week, which coincided with the start of the option-year signing period. Among the teams that showed enough interest initially to bring Wake in for a recruiting visit were the Denver Broncos, who fired coach Mike Shanahan.

However, Wake switched agents Tuesday, dumping Brian Redden of Cincinnati for Paul Sheehy of Littleton, Colo., who has close to two dozen CFL clients and has previous success negotiating deals for NFL-calibre players.

Sheehy, who did not return several calls, concluded an agreement this week for another

26-year-old CFL player who had drawn NFL interest when standout receiver Jamel Richardson re-signed a four-year deal with the Montreal Alouettes. The Lions are not holding out hope they will reach a similar conclusion with Wake.
3 sacks in his first game for the Lions. We wondered: was that just a fluke? Nope. It seemed like he could leap over the offensive line. He probably could. He had great speed. Amazing strength. A motor like no other. He was a phenom. And, all the while, he conducted himself in the best manner one could hope for.

I have only good wishes for Cam Wake. I hope he kicks ass in the NFL.

Sad to see him go, but given the small window in pro sports to make a decent living, it's completely understandable. Hope things work out for him, he was a treat to watch.

That's serious coin for a CFL option-year player. Pass-rush specialists are valuable commodities in the NFL. It will be interesting to find out how teams plan to use him.

So sad to see him go. He was the best defensive player I have ever seen in the CFL. I wish him all the best and I just became a fan of whichever team he signs with.

Next year is looking like an uncapped year for the NFL, so it may be easier for teams to throw bonus money out there right now.

As I have said many times, I hope he goes to a 3-4 team and plays LB. That is more akin to the style he has played up here. Better chance of being an every down player as well.

He is the most dominant player I have ever seen in the CFL. I swear that by the end of this season teams were allowed to hold him as he kills the entertainment value by constantly harassing QBs. I know lots of holding goes uncalled, but I have watched way too much football and I have never seen someone get held as much in any league as Wake did.

I remember after one game the radio broadcasters said they counted 19 different occasions where Wake was blatantly held and they didn't call it. This is partly why I'm glad Jake Ireland is retiring. There were times where Wake was literally dragging a lineman draped around his neck in front of Ireland and he wouldn't throw a flag. It was an absolute joke.

Cal Murphy was at practice 2 days in a row in the Fall, checking Cam Wake out. Murphy was representing the Indianapolis Colts. I expect them to be in the running to get Wake signed.

Wake would seem to fit the defensive style and schemes that the Colts run.

DEs with the Colts

Freeney, Dwight DE 6-1 268

Howard, Marcus DE 6-0 237

Johnson, Curtis DE 6-3 237

Mathis, Robert DE 6-2 245

Thomas, Josh DE 6-5 271

These are not huge guys.

I think Cam was up to about 260 - 265 lbs in his second year with the Lions. If necessary, I think he could carry more weight, but I don't think it is necessary with his strength.

It will be very interesting, exciting and fun to see how he does in the NFL.

You can't say no to that. That's what every kid in North America (in terms of football that is ),dreams of doing. Its a dream come true. I hope he doesn't become a piece of meat, but, right on!

I totally agree that Cam Wake deserves a chance in the NFL. I understand that any American playing here would jump at the opportunity, but I only ask that when they do get a chance to play in the NFL, they remember Canada, & especially the CFL, with respect. In many cases, the CFL has given players an opportunity to gain experience & to display their talents. I was dismayed to read Brendan Ayanbadejo's comments. (see post from lions_pride26) The players have to realize that Canadian fans see these comments.
All the best Cam....it's been a pleasure!!
