Who are your top 5 pro football coaches ever? NFL or CFL no matter
Here are my nominees:
1 Bill Walsh - as Al Davis called him: "the Genius from Northern California"
My Tribute to Bill Walsh

2 Vince Lombardi
Run to Daylight. Undefeated in Championship games.
3 Bill Bellichick
His record speaks for itself.
4 Wally Buono
His record, etc. Personnel moves. Sets the tone, expectations. Big picture.
Attention to detail. Gets the best players and coaches available and gets
them to do their thing. Makes the tough decisions that are the right ones.
It might seem that he is more of a General Manager than a coach, but unlike
most GMs he is on the field at practice, involved every day.
When he was in Calgary I remember how difficult it was to get a victory
against them.
5 Don Matthews
His record, etc. Personnel. Strategies. Giving the players confidence.

A top 5 of CFL and NFL coaches with only Landry and Walsh not ever in the CFL :
Marv Levy
Bill Walsh
Don Matthews
Bud Grant
Tom Landry
Just a few of my top picks. It is hard to compare coaches in different leagues.
You could also consider a list that includes not only Wally Buono but
Hugh Campbell - CFL mostly.
Frank "Pop" Ivy
Frank Clair
Dave Ritchie
Other NFL greats:
John Madden
Chuck Knox
Chuck Noll
Paul Brown
Don Shula
Bill Bellichick
It's hard to come up with just 5.

Don Matthews - tops my list.
Hugh Campbell - you gotta love what he did with Edmonton. He reduces his role (even as GM) and look what happens.
Dave Ritchie - I just really enjoyed him as a coach
Tom Landry - Almost made me a Cowboys fan ...
#5 could be a # of people - not sure how to rank them after these four.

Now that I don't live in Quesnel do I need to change my handle??

Or Larry Kuharich
Ouch, and the worst part about his tenure, is that anyone from Clagary knew going in that was the case, crazy decision to place him in charge.TheLionKing wrote:Or Larry Kuharich

Worst coach ever: Lary Kuharich
Most disappointing GM: Joe Kapp
After his exploits as QB here and with the Vikings, it hurt to see how poorly Kapp did as GM.
When I was playing community football as a teenager, Kapp was the Local Hero, making the Lions the talk of the town. All those years later, after he washed out as GM, when I saw him trying to do motivation workshops in a low-class environment it looked bad. A legend tarnished.

And don't forget George "Papa Bear" Halas. Halas owned "Da Bears" for 63 years and coached for 40 of them.
I have a 1958 Baltimore Colts program from a game against the New York Giants. Amongst the Giant assistants serving under HC Jim Lee Howell were an Offensive Coordinater by name of Vince Lombardi and a fairly young Defensive Coordinator by name of Tom Landry. Not a bad staff.

You're as old as you've ever been and as young as you're ever going to be.
