If the offencive scheme has no backs in to block, the QB must get rid of it quickly, not wait on some slow developing play long downfield. If you want to see how to operate a CFL quick passing attack, just watch Joe Zuger in the '67 Grey Cup...not much chance for the QB to get injured in that offence:

Oh yeah. Totally agree.

Anthony Calvillo gets rid of it quickly too. And Danny McManus was a master at it. The last second throw.

Dave and Buck would virtually refuse to get rid of the ball out of bounds, and would seemingly rather take the sack than throw it away. As you point out, they would also not use the Hook Slide (I call it the Staubach Slide).

While Buck likely learned a lot from Dickenson, the fact is that he also began to emulate his style of hanging onto the football too long and also staying in the pocket and not moving enough back there, and throwing short too often. When Buck first played here in B.C. he was more mobile, more willing to take off, didn't hang onto the football as long and was more willing to throw deep or intermediate.
I'll go along with the Cavillo comment of throwing quickly but Cavillo is also an expert and sliding left and buying time to throw, when he needs to. Danhy Mac just hated to get hit and he was willing to throw interceptions rahter than take a hit.
