Looks like Wally came to his senses and has named McCallum as our starting kicker again. Wally must have got into contact with his alternate personality and realized that McCallum is the better percentage field goal kicker, has a better punt average, has huge experience, and has been clutch for our Leos in pressure situations.
Whyte kicked the winning field goal but missed two last week. However, Wally could have averted this disaster, that makes him look like he not only struggles with quarterback decisions, in game kicking decisions, but also starting place/kicker-punter decisions. Wally blew another one last week when he should have place-kicked before the half and didn't. His excuse this time..he didn't know that time was running out.
Whyte will be our kicker/punter next year. He is cheaper, younger, and Wally will avoid giving McCallum his bonus in January. For now, Wally has corrected an error in judgment...now will he punt from Edmonton's 20 yard line or go for the field goal...tune in to Wally's potential next brain cramp when we play Edmonton next.

Whyte's inferior numbers (well not inferior compared to PM this year) will be ok next year, but it's unacceptable this year?Blitz wrote:Looks like Wally came to his senses and has named McCallum as our starting kicker again. Anyway, it's already being discussed here:

I still don't see why Wally can't use both of them. He gets himself into so much difficulty falling in and out of love with ONE player at a time versus seeing how he can love them both and make them both effective.

Yes, but the Riders use both Congi and Boreham. I am not sure why if fatigue is a factor for Whyte why this wouldn't help him develop while having PM there also. Hey, who knows. With the cold weather whether PM might not get injured.
I know it is Wally's way to be in love with McCallum this week and next week it will be Whyte. Kind of like a David Letterman love affair without the illicit sex.

This will cost McCallum's job.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Looks like Wally's error in judgement came this week by having McCallum in and not giving Whyte the chance to gain the experience to kick in cold weather. Now we have to hope he can pick it up on the fly next season.
McCallum picked up right where he left off at the beginning of the season before his injury.
The only question is do you take up another roster spot and go with 2 kickers next game. McCallum for fg's and Whyte for punts.

Entertainment value = an all time low
Did anyone else have flashbacks to the 2004 Grey Cup when watching McCallum`s punting? I thought it was O`Mahony punting out there.
McCallum is done - he is 40 years old, and the clock has struck midnight on his pro football career. With limited roster sizes, I think it really hurts you to carry two kickers - far better to have one specialist for that role. Release McCallum, bring back Whyte, and start looking for a competitor for him for camp in 2010.
