Every Sunday, sports fans sound off

Terry McConnell, The Edmonton Journal Published: 2:38 am

- In the first half, he's Ricky Ray. In the second half, he plays more like Martha Ray.

- It was a testament to Danny Maciocia and his coaching staff last weekend that the Eskimos were outwitted, outplayed and outscored 20-3 once they made their halftime adjustments.

- Coach Maciocia, it's time to saddle up and ride out of town before the lynch party forms.

- The most entertaining thing about Eskimos football these days is watching two other teams play a good game and trying to figure out at what point the Esks would have lost the contest.

- In only two years, Danny Maciocia and A.J. Gass have turned the Esks from a winning team with class to a losing team with no class.

- Hey coach, next time you stop by Santa Maria Goretti Church, maybe you could ask for a new defensive coach.

- The Eskimos would have beaten Calgary back in July if they had left in their starting quarterback for a first-and-goal from the two-and-a-half. Now they realize they were trying to fix something that wasn't broken because they're leaving their starter in on these short-yardage situations. If that's not bad coaching, what is?

- OK, so the Canucks have never won the Stanley Cup, but deriding them for it shows why the rest of the country dislikes Edmonton. Not only is the town flat and displeasing, but attempts by its fans to hang onto past glories is pathetic.

What a turn of events for that city. First the Oilers and now the Esks.

Ughhh-ly times in the "City of Champions"

Maciocia in danger of being run out of town on a rail.

The Eskimos falling from a franchise with history, pride and class into a shambles.

Hmmmm ... so they have abandoned the special play favorite of Jacques Chapdelaine - sub the QB in short yardage. Jacques must have thought it was genius to make that substitution. It makes sense if you wish to protect a QB from injury (like Dave D) but otherwise is questionable.

Well, yeah, that is one of the reasons why Edmonton is reviled around the country. "flat and displeasing" - True. "hanging on to past glories is pathetic" - True.
