Yeah, in the early 1980's, there was a three way competition for video game consoles:

1. Atari 2600
2. Intellivision
3. ColecoVision

Competition between these three stopped after the video game market crash of 1983. Despite the fact that it was based on one of the most famous movies, the video game E.T. was deemed to be one of the worst games ever created.

Or the twin 7-11's in North Van a block apart?
The Granville Bridge and the Dusmuir and Georgia Viaducts that were to form the eventual (but succesfully defeated) freeway system in and out of downtown.
Mother Tuckers was a good location to go to on your B-Day, but it would be only a regular cut of beef for free.
Entertainment value = an all time low

Robbie wrote:Finally, the days of the NASL and the Vancouver Whitecaps? It was 27 years ago at this time on September 8, 1979 that the Whitecaps were playing in Giants Stadium in New York for the Soccer Bowl against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Whitecaps won the Soccer Bowl by a score of 2-1. Now...27 years later, the Whitecaps are in the state of New York again to compete for the championship. Do you feel a sense of deja vu? But somehow, I have a feeling that if the Whitecaps win the championship on Saturday, the reaction in Vancouver won't nearly be as excited and celebratory as it was in September 1979. :sigh:
27 years and 22 days ago, this group of men were heroes in Vancouver:

A crowd in excess of 100,000 cheered them on as they arrived back in Vancouver after winning the NASL championship:

That squad was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Were any of you among the crowd who greeted the Whitecaps and singing:

White is our color
Soccer is our game
We're all together
And winning is our aim
So cheer us on through the sun and rain
'Cause Whitecaps....Whitecaps is our name!

Tonight, this squad just won another soccer championship for the city of Vancouver. Maybe 27 years from now, I'll be asking all of you if you remember what you were doing this night, and if you remember what who the Lions were playing and what the score was on the same evening that the Whitecaps won the 2006 USL championship.

I remember that very well, in 1988 when they finished second in the west to host the west semi-final against BC, which the Lions prevailed 42-18.

Seeing the Hamilton rain game reminded me -- remember when some players (usually QBs?) would wear those really long overcoats in inclement weather while on the bench? The only time you see those anymore is when John Facenda is narrating.

And when NHL head coaches wore hats...
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

I believe the correct term is "open marriage." :)
