After 9.5 years as BC Premier, Gordon Campbell resigned today. Overall, were you satisfied with him? Despite being elected three times for Premier, I think he became very unpopular after the introduction of the 12% HST. The impaired driving conviction didn't help things but I think everyone was willing to think past that. I was wondering whether Campbell would break the 20 year record as BC Premier by W. A. C. Bennett and the 11 years by Bill Bennett.

At least Campbell did not resign in disgrace as a result of scandals like Bill Vander Zalm, Mike Harcourt, and Glen Clark.

always hated that scumbag. Glad we finally rid of him. It will take a long time to repair the overall damage he did to this province, mainly for his precious olympics. I always knew that once the olympics were over, the majority of the province would finally see the light about this guy.

The only reason he lasted so long was because of the NDP alternative. I met Carol James...no way am I voting for her.
My wifes friend worked on her campaign and was reluctant to vote for her, even though she despised Gordo.
Who's next. Colin Hanson had his head so far up Gordo's butt, you could see Kevin Falcon's feet.
It just might be ...same shyte, different pile.

I too have met Ms. James and assisted on one of the campaigns for the NDP and I wasn't particularly inspired either by her or how the NDP ran their campaign. This is the way I figured it would go down. Gordo would stand by until after the Olympics. After the HST his personal popularity was so low, you couldn't help but wonder if he would quit. Now that he is gone, so to will be the focus of hatred. With the next election a good amount of time away, this is probably the only real shot that the Libs have of keeping power next time round. They are going to have to try and find someone with the credentials but who maybe wasn't so close to Campbell, lest (s)he be tainted by his legacy.
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

In some ways his leaving is a bit sad as this guy had the potential to be a great leader for BC and possibly even go on to the national stage.

He was a top Mayor of Vancouver which does not necessarily make you a good Premier but he ran the city differently than he ran his government. He did not have that mean streak about him that has so much characterized his dealings as Premier.

What he did with the HST was wrong and they lied to British Columbians. This latest income tax cut coming in Jan is fine but cynical.

The sale of BC Rail - something that Premier WAC Bennett did because he had a vision for British Columbia that could not be realized with the other national railways - CNR and CPR - who have done very little but to protect their bottom lines. Mr. Campbell lost one election by saying he'd sell BC Rail. He learned not to say that but did that in what has turned out to be a disgusting criminal investigation of members of his own Cabinet, a raid on the Legislature, and staff insiders leaking information. The culture of that government stinks and the leadership is where it all starts.

The transfer of his Chief of Staff Martin Brown to a Deputy Minister role is symptomatic of the arrogance this leader fell into. Normally that role would be filled by incoming leader and that person not remain in the public service.

In some ways Gordon Campbell leaves much like Bill Bennett who as Premier took the Province into some of the darkest days in the early 1980s with cuts in government that depleted vital ministries and plunged the entire province in a near general strike and a psychological mind set that was not broken until 1986. I recall BC Central Credit Union head economist Richard McAlary showing studies of how all but BC was fully participating in the economic recovery - all due to the leadership.

Now Mr. Campbell leaves his party decimated and in severe trouble. The last act of a cynical leader!

Do you think that squirrel would want to run for public office? :roar:

It seems that in past 40 years, more government leaders resign in disgrace before they get kicked out by the voting public.. After two + terms for any government, the bloom tends to falls off the rose very quickly.

meh

Never voted for Gordo, was outta the country for at least one of those elections

James will never win and the libs realize they have time to rebuild with their figurehead gone and will most likely win if The NDP doesn't turf Carole

Not sad to see that Campbell arrogance and secretive deal-making go, but it's hard to see an acceptable replacement at this point. Carol James and her overreacting unilateral eviction of Simpson from NDP caucus, for comments that weren't terribly critical? Huh, shows how much she adheres to the NDP's mission statement of "Leadership. For the people"... ooh, the irony. May as well state "Leadership. By Dictatorship".

Kevin Falcon or Colin Hansen? I'd rather stick needles in my eyes. Rich Coleman? Gaah, book the moving van for Alberta/Saskatchewan now while you can.

I think I'm with JCalhoun on this - we need a new political party that knows what the terms "honesty", "decency", and "representation of the public" actually means.

We've had some beauties as Premier.

Mini Wac Bill Bennett

Van Der Zalm

Glen Clark

Gordon Campbell

It has been said that people get the government they deserve. Ouch if it were true.

The quote has been attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Alex de Tocqueville and Shakespeare's character Cassius.

I think there is no immediate solution to our woes until we get a contending third party, be it conservative, some kinda reform again, green, or even a return of social credit.

I think the best long term solution is the following.

Diane Watts joins, but not as leader, a party other than lib or ndp. Preferably a resurgant conservative party.

Diane is elected as an MLA

By second election, Dianes party become the official opposition and Diane becomes part of the opposition cabinet or whatever they call it, cant remember right now

Third election from now, Diane has become leader of the party and is voted in as premier.

By this point, things will be such a mess that it would take at least two terms for them to get things looking notably better, so the voters will need to be patient.

However, sadly, I think Diane has a different agenda. Our loss.

BC is too small for a third party but I'd like to see Carole Taylor as BC Liberal Leader and Premier.

She was a good Min of Finance.
