1040 has reported that former NHL coach Pat Burns, who has been battling cancer and took a turn for the worse according to some recent reports, succumbed this morning. But I don't see anything else about it online. Premature announcement?
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

It was on the TSN web site as well, but the article has been pulled. Apparently he is still alive:

Strange stuff online right now, several sources reported he died, including the Montreal Gazette. Those stores were quickly pulled down. Burns' son reports he has taken a turn for the worse.

Burns seems like a great guy, such a terrible battle he's had with some of the worst forms of cancer. Sadly, from friends or family we can all relate to some degree.

Lots of conflicting headlines right now.

Here's what TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted:

"Pat Burns just called me Seriously. Here's what he said. 'Here we go again. They're trying to kill me before I'm dead...

'I come to Quebec to spend some time with my family and they say I'm dead. I'm not dead, far f------ from it. They've had me dead since June.

'Tell I'm alive. Set them straight.' Done, my friend. Done. What a beauty. A great man, a great friend. Just leave him the hell alone."

Do ya think the NHL is going to regret now, not putting him into the Hall of Fame a couple of week ago. What a bunch of Asshats they are. They knew the guy was dying, his record is good enough for Hall of Fame admission but no, they decide to sit on it instead of honouring a member of their fraternity in what turns out to be some of his finals days.
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.
