What is the speculation out there about who will light the Olympic torch at the opening ceremonies? IMO, it should be the man most synonymous with sporting excellence in Vancouver and British Columbia and that is Lui Passaglia. At a minimum, I hope that Lui is a significant part of the opening ceremonies - maybe bringing the torch into the dome at least - so that a worldwide audience can hear the fans at B.C. Place chant "Lui" once again. What do you all think?

Rick Hansen. And I would be in full support of that.

Please don't let it be a politician.

Joe Sakic. Yeah.

Nancy Green. Yeah.

Lui Passaglia. Yeah.

Scott Niedermaier. Yeah, even though he is competing.

Steve Yzerman. Yeah, even though he is heavily involved.

Ross Rebagliati. LOL No.

I think it should be somebody from BC who has won olympics medals in the past. I would have chosen Nancy, but I read in the paper its not her because she is going to be the official ambassador, whatever that means.

I agree with most of the suggestions above, but knowing Vanoc's overbearing PC earnestness, it's likely to be a French-speaking transgendered First Nations wheelchair athlete (oops, I mean paralympian).

Rick Hansen is a good idea. He has world recognition IMHO.

I first thought that Lui was as good a choice as any, that is until Rick Hansen's name was tossed into the mix here by WCJ, his selection seems to accommodate most of David's points as well.

You gotta be kidding. He'd probably lecture everyone about how the flame is filling the atmosphere with GHG. He's likely boycotting the whole thing anyway.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Is there anyone else out there that's so #$%$# sick of hearing about Terry Fox as I am?

It should be a Winter Games veteran or medal winner. From BC. That narrows it down. There are a number of hockey players we could choose, but who has a bigger history and profile than Nancy Greene Raine?

If she can't do it for one conflict of interest or another, give it to Kerrin Lee-Gartner. Nobody's mentioned her yet.

I say no to Nancy Green. I've met too many people who've all said she is one huge beotch. Anyone who throws a *poop* fit trying to cut in line and demanding her own gondola up the mountain doesn't get that honour in my opinion.

I'd prefer to stay current. Rick Hansen sounds cool .

I will stick to the same opinion from December 2007:

I'll give you my opinion:

Flag Bearer: Cindy Klassen
Cauldron Lighter: Marc Gagnon
