Finally, four years after the States, we have our own National Do Not Call List operating!

Now you can sign up and remove yourself from un-wanted telephone calls.

Just make sure when you fill out a form, to check the box that says you don't want 3rd-party solicitation. Now with the call-registry in effect, that is one way they will try to get your consent.

People who can still call you:

-Charities
-Political Parties
-Survey companies
-Newspapers (Interesting, someone did some good lobbying on that one)
-Somebody you bought from in the past 18 months
-Or if they have your consent

What you can do for the exempted parties: "You can ask to be put on the telemarketer’s own specific do not call list. Every Canadian telemarketer is required to maintain such a list."

Register here.

The problem is that an exemption has been made for "market research firms". These are the people who can consume half an hour or more of your time with those omnibus surveys on behalf of multiple clients. Call me a cynic, but I am betting that a lot of companies will now prospect for clients by first posing as a market research firm, thus skirting the law.

We will see how vigorously the law gets enforced on this. I'm not holding my breath, although you would think the government would want one high profile hanging early on to show that they mean business...

Well, that just about includes everyone that calls me now. :bang:

Like Lionut said, I'm not holding my breath that this will eliminate nuisance calls.

What I find staggering is after passing the law, government took 3 years to implement the program.

Interesting, the US Do-Not-Call list does not include an exemption for newspapers.

Heard on the news that over 300,00 people had already registered. Demand has been so high that the website is down.
