Now you don't even need a welfare cheque. Other provinces pick up the fare to send them here.

In light of the 35-year passing of Terry Fox, I'm sure you remember the old Terry Fox Memorial Arch. Even though it meant well and had the best intentions, it was always controversial, unattractive, and unpopular and as such, I guess most don't really miss it after it was demolished in late 2010 as part of the BC Place renovations.

Oh yes, I remember that one. The Gilligans's Island reboot of a stage coach endlessly lost in the American midwest. Can't find where they are, much less their destination (San Francisco wasn't it). Only thing missing was the prairie coconut.

It's now 29 years after the Edmonton Tornado on July 31, 1987. Two videos about it.

In light of the fact that the Lions have hosted just their third west division semi-final in their long franchise history and the first time since the fall of 1986 - 30 years ago this time - who remembers the autumn of 1986?

Internationally:

1. The New York Mets won the World Series over the Boston Red Sox in seven games, with the most memorable one being game 6 in which the Red Sox led by 2 runs and got 2 outs and twice came within a strike from winning it all but instead allowed the Mets to score 3 runs with the third one courtesy of Bill Buckner's huge blunder.

2. Famous movies at that time were Soul Man and Star Trek IV The Voyage Home.

3. The Oprah Winfrey Show debuted.

4. The Iran–Contra affair was revealed.

5. Famous music albums were Madonna's True Blue, Beastie Boys' License to Ill, Duran Duran's Notorius, The Bangle's Different Light.

And close to home, locally:

1. The busy Expo 86 came to an end on October 13. Did you like the event and were there any pavilions you missed?

2. Bill Vander Zalm became the new BC premier in the summer after long time Bill Bennett resigned and on October 22 he win the BC Provincial Election over NDP candidate Bob Skelly who had public speaking problems. Who would have know than in less than 5 years Bill Vander Zalm would resign in disgrace over his sale of Fantasy Gardens and shortly afterwards the BC Social Credit party was essentially dissolved.

3. The Vancouver Canucks started another terrible season under second year coach Tom Watt.

4. The UBC Thunderbirds won their second Vanier Cup by defeating Western 25-23. The Vancouver Canadians lost the PCL championship in 5 games.

5. And then for the Lions, defending the Grey Cup from 1985 appeared to be an easy task at first after a win over Winnipeg. But on the second game the Lions suffered a huge loss in Edmonton. But nonetheless in September the Lions had an excellent record at 9-2 and led in the west. But a terrible loss to Edmonton again started a 4 game losing streak that dropped the Lions to 3rd in the west. The Lions rebounded somewhat to win the last three regular season games including two over Winnipeg in the last two final games to salvage 2nd in the west.

The west division semi-final against Winnipeg was played on a Saturday afternoon, November 15. The Lions did not produce one of their finest performances despite a 21-0 lead only to evaporate to 21-14 and but managed to force a fumble on the BC one-yard line late in the game to preserve the lead and win 21-14. The attendance was 40,381 which was lower than the usual attendance for that season. Reality set in in the WDF when the Lions were demolished 41-5 in Edmonton. I posted this before and here it is again with a short clip of that game:

The third Lions home west division semi-final will be against Winnipeg for the third time as the Lions also faced them in 1977 and managed to win by preventing a late completion. May the Lions have a more convincing blowout win this time. At least this time if the Lions win they won't be going to Edmonton. And if the Lions advance may they take out Calgary in the WDF like they did in 1994 and 2000.

Well, not exactly. He did return to the Lions in the championship 1994 season, but his impact was minimal and was released well before the start of the playoffs.

Mike Beamish also wrote his own memories of the fall of 1986 in his writeup of last night's game.
Mike Beamish wrote:In the only game of four scheduled by the Canadian Football League on the final weekend of the regular season with importance riding on the outcome, the Lions took care of business to claim second place in the division at 12-6.

Oddly enough, the Lions will play their first home game in a West semi-final since 1986, next Sunday, against the 11-7 Winnipeg Blue Bombers — the same team the Lions faced 30 years ago when they last took the runner-up spot in the division with the same 12-6 record.

Back then, the Bombers were the Lions most heated rival, when players such as Roy Dewalt, Mervyn Fernandez, James “Quick” Parker and Lui Passaglia roamed the turf at the wonder-to-behold four-year-old domed stadium. Lions averaged 46,526 fans that year, at time when the Canucks were in the doldrums and football was king of the Lower Mainland sporting scene.

actually, those who do not believe in Jesus as the son of god and their saviour, might as well say happy holidays instead.
