The decline of Vancouver sports media & its effect on Lions

Rintoul is gone from TSN 1040.
who will handle p-b-p this year. My money is on HockeyAbbs. Farhan, Moj, Price as long shots. Maybe scotty will be back via contract basis.

TSN 1040 pre and post game shows were really improved with Jeff Patterson added to the usual group of Moj, Burnie, Gulio, etc. I assume Jeff is now on contract, after been canned two years ago (probably due to complaining by canucks ownership) but seems to be on the air more than ever now. Maybe scotty will be the same.

That is too bad, Rintoul was a very good Lion supporter, bringing his football background into the equation. I guess we get more US babbling radio in his timeslot. As for the Lions broadcasts, it is becoming a revolving door which hurts the product in the end. No surprise with the T(oronto) S(ports) N(etwork) running the show. Hope Rintoul lands on his feet locally.

I thought this was going to be some kind of toast recipe favoured by Scott.

Marc Weber, whose last at the Province is tomorrow (huge carnage for Whitecaps coverage today) tweeted there is still no deal in place between the Caps and 1040 for radio coverage this coming season.
With Schaad being let go maybe they will just drop it entirely and will the Lions be next on the chopping block? They barely were able to scrape a deal together last time around.

I can't say I'm too surprised, unless you enjoy the Chipmunks version of play-by-play. He's the first Lions PBP guy ever, that I won't listen to...and I go back to Jim Cox, who was about the best in my books. I guess Rintoul's over-the-top adoration of the Seahawks rubbed me the wrong way. I do admire his love of football and hopefully Scotty will land on his feet with another gig.

Going through our archives the Lions signed a 2 year agreement with TSN 1040 in March 2015. So that deal is now officially up with the play by play guy punted today. Sure seems like they are about to drop Lions and Caps coverage. Maybe they will offer pre and post game for both only since all games are televised?

Can't see them dropping lions p-b-p. The post-game show is always loaded with callers. Its all depends on advertisers.

I could see them dropping caps radio. biggest problem is its 2hours with almost no commercials and can't make any money. They don't even put it on 1040 and perry sowkowski has said they don't even get callers for post game show.

My bet is that Scott will be on contract, and that Lions football will be a shared inventory property on 1040 or 1410.

Bell made over 700 million in the third quarter, so it's not like they are on the edge of oblivion.

Corus is skewing to a female audience, and only an arrangement like Calgary (where the Stamps drive 9% of station cluster revenue) is the Corus-sports relationship healthy. Don't count on CKNW to make a move on the Lions or the Whitecaps.

I love sports radio but not many people in Metro Vancouver do. The average combined listening audience of TSN 1040 and TSN 1410 would barely fill the Langley Events Centre. TSN 1410 is the bottom-rated station in the market, with an average audience of 500. Combined, the two stations have less than 5% of the local radio market. Bell isn't making money off these stations and they won't want to pay much for talent or broadcast rights.

If Abbott gets the job, I'll never listen to another Lions game ever again. He was gifted the Canucks job from TSN headquarters in Toronto and his on air performance shows why he was doing AHL games before coming to Vancouver.

While the ratings book is important, it's not the be all, end all when it comes to how much the station can charge its advertisers.

It's likely a very specific listener on TSN1040 (I'm willing to bet there's a huge cluster lot of middle aged white guys). If I own ACME Hardware, I know I can reach that listener far better than a station with a much wider reach but less segmented, and am willing to pay for the privilege of hitting my target demo.

I am not saying this is 100% factual - I haven't looked at their books. But that is generally how radio works. Small doesn't necessarily mean 'irrelevant' or 'money loser.'

Rintoul is a die-hard 49ers fan.

TSN1040's love for the seabags is totally advertiser driven. one advertiser is a big seahawks fan. if you don't want seahawks on TSN1040 then just boycott king of floors.

personally, i frequent all the advertisers on lions broadcasts and especially lions sponsors. They are putting $ up to invest the club just like I am.
