Apparently Stewart is injured right now and Farhan thinks we might go with two cdn DBs. I think we signed this guy as insurance at field corner

Maybe the Als can trade Adams to the Riders for the 2nd and 4th round draft picks that the Als traded to the Riders to get Durant.

#BCLions have contacted the agent for linebacker Tony Burnett. Expect a deal to get done.

CFL free agency.
Although listed as a linebacker, Burnett is really a nickelback who played cornerback and safety at USC. He is undersized for the WILL spot but might be a good fit in a Mark Washington defence.
The Lions have confirmed the signing of Tony Burnett, who is a valuable special teamer and can compete at WILL and nickel.
The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to announce that international linebacker Tony Burnett has agreed to terms on a contract with the team for the 2017 season.

The one-time Lion who attended training camp with the club in 2014 had spent the past two years as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Through 25 games with the Blue and Gold, the USC grad appeared in 25 games including a full 18-game slate in 2016, recording 33 tackles, 23 special teams stops and a pair forced fumbles.

“We liked Tony a lot a few years ago and we’re very happy to have an opportunity to bring him back,” said GM and head coach Wally Buono. “There will be plenty of competition to fill the outside linebacker position vacated by Adam Bighill and Tony’s signing makes that competition even better.”
A Bomber blogger has done a good breakdown of Burnett's suitability for the pass coverage responsibilities that Mark Washington gave Adam Bighill last year. Burnett was used in pass coverage much the same way when he filled in at WILL for the Bombers.

Farhan tweets that the Lions made an offer to Sinkfield.

Chris Rainey under contract.

Chris Williams?

Of Banks, Williams and Rainey, three super CFL smurfs, this fan prefers Rainey.

My God, such an abundance of speed. Room for two of them? Sure. Three? Dunno about that. Rainey, Sinkfield and Williams? Wow. Wally seems to have fallen in love with speed.

We will see how free agency shakes out.

D Line. That is the area of primary concern, at this time, for this fan. Jabar W close to signing back east, it has been reported. Mark W may prefer smaller, quicker tackles. This fan prefers to have a very large run stopper in there, as we have seen in the past.

It is all interesting as football fever heats up.

It sounds like the Chris Williams signing hinges on his health, with Wally wanting insurance in case he is not ready to go at the start of the season.

#BCLions and WR Chris Williams have agreed on a contract number. It's how bonuses and games played break down that have to be ironed out.

Not surprised at all that Wally is trying to sign Williams. He knows that an exciting offense helps sell tickets and he's got a great young gunslinger on a good contract.

Definitely some holes remaining on defense however.

I was very surprised at how many pending free agents we were able to lock down prior to free agency. Didn't expect to be able to sign Steward, Brooks, etc..

As well, wally doesn't like is returner to play offense due to number of hits you take as a returner.

By having Williams and Rainey, you can have them share the returner workload and Rainey can get Offensive reps.

Williams had an all-time great CFL returner season with the Ticats a few years back, but - basically disappeared as a good returner with Ottawa; i think he gets looked at as receiver only or mostly now, but could still do some return duty if need be. But what a potential great addition IF he is healthy? Him with Manny and Burnham as the big 3 in a receiver corps = so much talent and deep threat ability; throw in Gore, plus Rainey, maybe Sinkfield fits in = lots of weapons on offence.

With a young QB progressing to top notch and maybe a league best O-line = makings of a dangerous, high scoring offence.

Yep, that's what I was thinking too. They don't want to reduce the number of touches Rainey gets, so with Williams helping out on returns, that should free up Rainey to get more plays on offence, where he's been very productive. I guess Williams could be the DI receiver to come in on passing downs with the import RB taken out. LBut not sure how Rainey gets more touches as J. Johnson has been very effective out of the backfield too? That should be a pretty awesome receiving corps no matter who they put in (plus we have the guy to get them the ball!)

Sinkfield likely won't be signed by the Lions if they ink Williams. But that is OK as there is only so much room on the roster and under the SMS AND you forgot to add Nick Moore to the Lions receiving corps list above.

So WIlliams potentially replaces Iannuzzi in the starting lineup, and we roll with Manny, Burnham, Moore, Gore and Williams? Wouldn't we need another Canadian somewhere for ratio purposes?

If the Leo's can get Chris Williams on board, that is a huge scoop IMO. Sinkfield as the speed threat never really panned out and I think Williams would be an upgrade. Speed kills and Williams has that in spades. Here's a link to the highlights from the Stamps-Redblacks game on July 8 when Williams had 3 TDs. http://www.ottawaredblacks.com/2016/07/ ... ottawa-26/ At the 1:55 mark, he simply outran the cushion and angle of 2014 West Division All-Star Fred Bennett for a 52-yd TD.

The prospect of Williams and Rainey teaming up in the return game is tantalizing. I also agree that if Rainey is to feature more in the offense, Wally is going to want a quality guy who can potentially spell him off on special teams and minimize the knocks.

Plus Williams is one hell of an exciting player.

Thanks, BCFAN, for the article. Very nice writeup on Burnett's ability.

6' 205 Excellent for his CFL work. LB DB Hard hitter. Great athlete. Excellent signing.

Hoping we draft a DL stud. Hoping we get some size at International DT.

DL On the roster ...

Ainsworth 6'3'' 247 Nat

Allen 6'3'' 240

Brooks 6'3'' 295

Forde 6'5' 262 Nat

Hudson 6'3'' 245

Menard 6'1'' 259 Nat

Perkins 6'2'' 233

Roh 6'5'' 265

Turner 6'2'' 279

Not a lot of size there, it seems to me. No nose tackle types, although Brooks can certainly play inside, and play it well. I get the impression that Mark W wants speed, not necessarily size up front. Turner has also shown he can play inside. Are we big enough there? And it seems we need depth behind those two inside guys.

Just IMO ...
