The Labour Day weekend is drawing to a close. Autumn quickly approaches, with its scents of apple and spice. Male leaves turn gold and brown and spiral through the air. The afternoon sun has an amber glow. The days are shorter and the mornings and evenings gather a chill that hints of colder days ahead.

Its a time of year that is both nostalgic and significant.

Autumn is football weather. Its the time of the football season that battles in the trenches become even more violent and the games ever more important.

Its been a football season to remember so far. Four game winning offensive drives. Last minute defensive stands. A heart breaking overtime loss. A team that has played like warriors on the road. An exciting young quarterback. Big plays. Intense games.

With 8 games left on the schedule, our Leos play five of those games at home. The furthest they will have to travel is to Winnipeg. We're back at B.C. Place after winning two road games in the East. We've beaten all four Eastern teams so far this season on their home turf.

With only a 2-2 record at home this season, and coming off an embarrassing loss to the Stamps the last time our Leos played at B.C.Place, this is a game in which our Leos need to establish that they can be as tough or even a tougher team to play than on the road.

Our matchup is against the Montreal Alouttes. Lets have a closer look:

DEFENCE

I'm starting with our defense this week because it was their outstanding play that was the key to our victory over the Argos, holding Ricky Ray and the offence of the Boat Men to 13 points.

Once again this season, our Lions have suffered an injury to a defensive back on the boundary side of our defence. We've had to replace T.J. Lee and Stephen Clarke at boundary halfback. Anthony Gaitor has quietly come in and done a good job at that tough spot to play.

Now, we have lost the very under rated Ronnie Yell, an excellent cover man who is also an excellent tackler, who hurt himself in the warm up prior to the Toronto game. Brandon Steward moved to boundary corner and Kenyan Parker started at field corner and played well.

Kenyan Parker will battle Chandler Fenner at practice this week to see who will start at wideside corner on Friday night. Fenner is tall and fast. Brandon Steward will start again at boundary corner. Our pass secondary will be anchored by veteran Ryan Phillips and safety Mike Edem. Rookie defensive back Anthony Thompson draws in on special packages when we go two safety deep.

Alex Bazzie has perhaps been our most valuable defensive player this season. Leading the CFL in sacks, Bazzie has already exceeded his sack totals of last season. But pressure on the quarterback has also come from two key defensive players. Solaman Eliminian has 5 sacks on the season, the most of any linebacker in the CFL and Westerman has four sacks.

Mich'eal Brooks has been quiet for the past two games, has no sacks so far this year and 7 defensive tackles in 7 games while Jabar Westerman has quietly enjoyed an excellent first half of the season with four sacks, 11 defensive tackles and solid play inside. Now that we are dressing two International defensive tackles, Bryant Turner Jr. is making his impact. He has 2 quarterback sacks and 9 defensive tackles.

Bo Lokombo, a situational linebacker, made an incredible play on a pass rush against the Argos, hurdling a blocker and hitting Ray's arm as he threw the football. leading to a key interception by Sol E. Lokombo is complimented by rookie nickel back Louchez Purifoy, who has 2 quarterback sacks, 1 interception (52 yds return) 3 forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery, and a 47 yd. touchdown so far this season.

Our defense will be facing an Alouttes team that does not have a good road record this season and are presently in last place in the East. This type of matchup can often result in an upset. Kevin Glenn is a wily quarterback who can get hot. He is just behind Jonathan Jennings in CFL passing yardage, has a better pass percentage average (70.7%) than Jennings (64.6%) and a similar quarterback efficiency rating. Glenn has thrown for 13 touchdowns this season while Jennings has throw 12 touchdown passes. Glenn's penchant for throwing interceptions is the only blemish in what has been a very good season for Glenn, in terms of throwing the football.

Duron Carter and Nik Lewis are Montreal's two most dangerous recievers. Carter has 46 catches on the season (15. 6 yd. average), 9 receptions of over 30 yds. and five touchdowns. He is their big play threat. Nik Lewis is Montreal's clutch receiver. He has a very impressive 67 receptions so far.

OFFENCE

While our Leos offence. led by Jonathan Jennings, has come through with four game winnwing drives and created a lot of excitement with big plays, it needs to become more consistent.

We will be playing a Montreal defence that has a 3-4 defensive philosophy and likes to bring the blitz. Montreal's defense so far this season has 25 quarterback sacks, created 13 forced fumbles, and has 7 interceptions. They like to play a higher risk, higher reward style of defence than do our Leos.

We need to be prepared for Noel Thorpe's defensive style of play, where Montreal will sometimes put 8 or even 9 players up at the line of scrimmage.

In Week Six of this CFL season, we had only given up one more sack than Calgary. Calgary had given up 8 quarterback sacks and our Leos had only given up 9 sacks in the first six weeks of the season. During the next five weeks of games, Calgary only gave up 2 sacks while we've given up 14 sacks.

Since the insertion of O'Neil at left guard for Hunter Steward and Levy Adcock for Antonio Johnson, our pass protection has suffered. Not only has Jennings been sacked much more but he has also had to escape, throw under pressure, and run more often. Its an area that needs addressing.

The offensive line personnel situation may get addressed this week. Buono has not been happy with Adcock's play and signed him as a free agent, based on Dorazio's recommendation. Buono said this weekend that Adcock's play is 'not rust'. Johnson will almost certainly draw in at right tackle for Friday night's contest. There is also a good chance that we will see Steward return to his starting left guard position.

Our Leos have used Anthony Allen and Jeremiah Johnson each for five games at tailback this season. Allen started our last two games. Allen is 5th in CFL rushing with 326 yds., a very good 5.1 yd. run average (Messam averages 5.3 yds. per carry). Jeremiah Johnson is 7th in CFL rushing with 309 yds. and a 5.2 yd. run average.

The only significant difference between the two, in terms of production is that Allen has been used more in the passing game, with 14 receptions vs. 6 receptions for Johnson.

Manny Arseneaux is our leading receiver with 55 receptions but he has also been targeted 90 times. Bryan Burnham is second in receiving, with 41 receptions (58 targets) and Shawn Gore, who has 44 receptions on 60 targets. Those stats indicate that we should be looking for Gore and Burnham more often and Arseneaux a little less often. Gore only had one catch ( a huge shoe string reception) for 5 yds. against Toronto and needs to be used more in the passing game mix again.

A question mark hangs over Boldewijn, who didn't play in Toronto, fighting a stomach virus that he dealt with in training camp. Boldewijn said he was ready to go on Tuesday in Toronto but surprisingly was pulled for Courtney Taylor, who was flown in and had one catch. Iaonnuzzi had 3 catches for 30 yds. against Toronto, including a big catch on the final drive.

Chris Rainey has been used a little more often in our offence recently. He had one rush for 9 yds. against Toronto and one catch for 20 yds. Against Ottawa, he had 4 rushes for 21 yds. and one catch for 10 yds.

We'll need to have some shorter passes and anti-blitz strategies ready for the Al's aggressive defence and we'll also need to pass protect Jennings better than we recently have.

SPECIAL TEAMS

1. Field Goal Kicking and Punting

Richie Leone hit three field goals in Toronto and looked more confident than he has all season. His punting still leads the CFL, with a 50.6 yd. average. He has hit 20/29 field goals (69%) this season.

Former Leo Anthony Fera is Montreal's field goal kicker. He has made 4 of his 5 field goal attemtps for Montreal, including a 52 yarder. He has range. Even though Fera is not being used by Montreal as a punter, Fera is capable of punting well. He had a 47. 6 yd. punt average as a Leo.

2. Punt and Kick Returns

Stephan Logan leads the CFL in punt return yardage this season. He can still be dangerous, with a 71 yard return this season.
Chris Rainey leads all punt returner in touchdowns with 2 touchdowns. He also has the second best punt return average in the CFL. Rainey is due for another long punt return.

WRAP

Our Leos have a great opportunity to establish a winning record at home this season with a win and excite their home fans again. With a victory we will move our record to 8-3 for the season.

Our Leos will need a very good offensive game plan against Montreal's attacking, blitzing defence. On defense we will need to get inside pressure on Glenn and control his two main passing weapons of Duron Carter and Nik Lewis.

On special teams, its time to give Rainey some open field to allow him to show his magic.

Go Leos! :roar:

The struggling Alouettes are expected to start Rakeem Cato at QB this week in place of veteran Kevin Glenn, who ranks with Jonathon Jennings in the Top 4 in most QB statistical categories this year but who has a penchant for throwing untimely interceptions. Glenn the good threw completed 25 of 30 passes for 382 yards and 5 TDs three weeks ago against Ottawa but was just 21 of 33 for 205 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs in a rematch last week.

The Alouettes are a trainwreck and they are still looking for someone they can rally around. Cato has shown some flashes at QB but is still unproven. The Lions have faced him before but he more of an unknown than Glenn.

Montreal trainwreck, Exhibits 1a, b and c, from Monday practice:

Rakeem Cato just lost his cool with Duron Carter. Had to be separated by Kevin Glenn and Anthony Calvillo.

Rakeem Cato is in the end zone and isn't practicing. Vernon Adsms is now working with the #Als' starting offence. Quiet time for Cato.

Interesting!

In limited playing time this season, Kato has completed 24/31 passes (77.4%) and has a 113 quarterback efficiency average. That is very good, but of course its a small body of work.

Rakeem Cato had a very impressive career at Marshall. Over two seasons, he threw for more yardage than Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh Boyd, Marcus Mariotta, and Johnny Manziel. He threw for more touchdown passes than Bridgewater or Mariotta.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Vernon Adams get some action in this game, depending on the circumstances. The Als gave us a first round draft choice to be able to sign him. The Als need to transition to a new quarterback. Whether it's Kato or Adams, they need to start building for the future. Both Kato and Adams had impressive college careers.

Rakeem Kato was a prolific passer in college, while playing for Marshall. Cato set a FBS record with a touchdown pass in his 39th straight game, breaking the old mark held by Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. He broke numerous records previously held by Leftowich and Pennington while at Marshall. Hew threw for more yards and touchdowns than Bridgewater and Mariotta over a two year span. He is athletic, can evade pressure, and throw on the run. He wasn't drafted mainly due to his skinny frame and inconsistent mechanics and delivery motion.

One would think, longer term, the Als will want to give Adams a real shot at the starting quarterback job in Montreal. In three seasons at Eastern Washington, Adams threw for 10,438 yards and 110 touchdowns and was 28-6 as a starter. He threw for 518 total yards in an upset win at Oregon State in 2013, then threw for 475 yards and seven touchdowns in a 59-52 loss at Washington while at Eastern Washington.

Vernon Adams won an FBS title and amassed very impressive numbers at Eastern Washington. In his final season at Oregon, Adams started 10 games and passed for 2,643 yards, 26 touchdowns and six interceptions. Adams was the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year, named a First-Team All-American by the Associated Press, and was twice a finalist for the Walter Payton Award.

Adams is suited for the CFL. He is a very athletic but not drafted to the NFL because he was considered undersized for the position at 5’11”, 200 lbs. with 9 1/8” hands and doesn't throw the super accurate football into the tight windows required of the NFL game. But he can improvise and make plays while on the move.  He is very comfortable throwing while scrambling to either side and he displays the ability to make very difficult throws from multiple spots on the field. He was a very aggressive, confident passer In college.

What has impressed me about the Montreal Als over so many seasons now, is their ability to draft and develop National offensive lineman.

They have an all National offensive line, backed up by three Nationals. Dominic Picard retired six days into the Als training camp and center Jourdain was sidelined by off-season knee surgery. That forced the Als to shift Kristian Matte from left guard to centre, Philip Blake moved from right to left guard; and rookie Philippe Gagnon was moved to right guard. Jacob Ruby became the replacement forJosh Bourke, who signed with Toronto as a free agent. Right tackle Jeff Perrett remained in the same spot.

While Wally has fretted about playing a National at tackle, with no National backup, Montreal, season after season, has played book end National tackles. Over the years, they have had so many good offensive National offensive linemen.

Lions' facing Als, but their bigger opponent is complacency. They need to be prepared and come out ready to play. If they do, Montreal is no match for them.

I enjoyed Justin Dunk's article on Beau Baldwin, former college coach of Mike Reilly, Matt Nichols, Bo Levi Mitchell, and Vernon Adams. Baldwin states that Adams was "the best quarterback to play here. That’s not taking anything away from those other guys – I just believe that. It’s hard to say that, but that’s true."

It's time for the Als to move away from Glenn. I don't blame them for playing him up to this point--he gave them a chance to win and gave the younger guys a chance to develop a bit more before throwing them into the fire--but they're not going to have any fans left if he keeps playing.

One of the major failures in Montreal has been the inability to instill leadership and accountability. Their best player is selfish and prone to tantrums. Cato expects the world to be handed to him on a silver platter. Their DC tried to bolt in the off-season and is just finishing out his contract. Their OC is woefully under-qualified. Sad time to be an Als fan.

I think we would be smart to use more packages with Lumbala this week, for the extra protection. If MTL will blitz that many guys,it will be quick passes that will hurt them. Hell even bring in the bug boys and run it on them, if Allen can get to the second level, he will have room

Complacency would be dangerous. The Als have a good defence. If you can't beat their blitz they can make it a tough game. Playing a second string quarterback who doesn't feel the pressure and can just to out there and play can also make it tougher. We've been beaten by these types of quarterbacks in the past.

Agree rodu! We should use some tight end sets and Lumbala. You can break a run for a big gainer against the blitz. You have to attack a blitzing team in a number of ways. You have to threaten deep. But you also have to be able to throw short and quickly, with well designed, well timed plays. Some of those short plays can become very big plays.

Happy to hear that this latest experiment with the O-Line is to be dismantled; at least according to a rather encouraging article by LU at 3downNation.com. I forget who was the poster on Lionbackers who suggested Dorazio may be inclined to overthink things; that may be very apt.

Shouldn't the first thing that is established in a coaches' mind is play your most talented guys? That should be a truism, a commandment.

Certainly in Wally's mind Adcock's poor showing wasn't due to rust, at least not after 3 games. The guy may have had a potential in someone's mind but the talent obviously didn't emerge or was never there to begin with.

Along with playing your most talented guys, keep getting talented guys. Patently simple, maybe even stupidly simple but strive to get Boyko so you say without a shadow of a doubt you have the most talented aggregation of National O-Linemen possible.

Personally I don't really care about who lines up where (maybe I should) but in the roster-thin CFL, you have to assume O-Linemen are going to get shuffled up and down the line. Get the best talent you can and PLAY the best you have.

Ummm....everyone?!? :dizzy:

I understand Adcock and Johnson split first team reps at practice today. We're playing with fire if we play Levi Adcock at RT Friday night. Montreal has a very aggressive front 7, and as sure as a non-reviewable Jim Popp challenge flag, we'll be seeing a steady dose of Noel Thorpe's blitz packages.

I also read that we're likely to go back to Jeremiah Johnson at RB. Given that Montreal will be the tired team coming to the West Coast (hopefully with many two and outs :cr:), I would be inclined to go with the heavier, more punishing back in Anthony Allen to wear down the Montreal D.

Steward is back starting at left guard. Yes!!

Adcock and Johnson splitting reps at right tackle. Not so good. Antonio Johnson should be starting. There is no way Adcock should play on Friday night. We should not allow that risk to Jennings.

As for Jeremiah Johnson starting over Allen I understand that we want to alternate and keep our tailbacks fresh. However, Allen is the better pass blocker and receiver of the two and would have been a better choice in my opinion for this game. Like you David, I also think Allen would have worn Montreal down more and we will want to run against Montreal.

Ronnie Yell is out for 6 weeks it looks like. We may not have decided yet whether to start Kenyan Parker or Chandler Fenner at corner but you can bet that Fenner will be on the roster for this game.

Now they are saying that Yell is likely gone for the season. That is a tough loss. Yell is quite simply an outstanding corner with very good coverage skills and excellent tackling skills. Stewart is experienced but not the cover guy or tackler than Yell is.

Yell fractured the fifth metatarsal bone when he landed awkwardly during warm-up against Toronto. The break was pinned (surgery) after the team arrived back in Vancouver.

Only Phillips and Purifoy have been able to play in all of our 10 games so far this season. Phillips has played in 204 of 208 games as a Leo.

Purifoy has been playing injured with a painful hyperextended elbow since our July game in Calgary. He left that game due to the injury and then came back into the game because we needed him to play, even with a damaged elbow and he has been playing with the injury ever since.

Buono will be bringing in an NFL cut at receiver as well as defensive back during the bye week. Once we activate Fenner, we will be out of International defensive backs on the roster. But we have Nationals Parker and Thompson as defensive backs and Fraser as a backup safety.
