The patient is not dead yet.

We showed many signs of life tonight.

John Jennings.

Chris Rainey.

Running lanes for Andrew Harris.

Some spirit from Manny Arceneaux.

Is Jeff Tedford, after a hands off, laid back start to the year, beginning to exert his control and influence?

Nice effort from the defence.

I love this Jennings. He has sparked the team. Along with Rainey of course.

Credit to Tedford. No panic. Making do with what he has.

I'm not ready to anoint Jennings yet until at least next week — let's see what he can do with a start, against an opponent who will have film to study; assuming Tedford rewards him with the start although Beck's health may force his hand anyway. But I am reaching for the oil.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

It's been a while, but man, why is Phillips still playing for us? The guy is afraid to hit anyone and thus receivers get great YAC yards against him.

Beck is useless, Jennings, he threw 3 picks, not impressed, BUT, he was playing in his first game so I'll give him a pass.

Rainey, wow, that kid is fast! Very impressed that he scored those 2 TD's.

Not sure about Tedford yet, but also not overly impressed with him or Cortez. What's with barely using Harris? Cannot figure that out at all.

My 2 cents worth. :)

Turnovers were the difference. The Lions lost the turnover battle 6-1. The Stamps scored 16 points off the first three B.C. turnovers, then added a turnover on downs inside the Calgary one-yard line and two end-zone interceptions to seal the victory. That's what good teams do but it added up to a boatload of points in a game the Stamps won by 12.

There were lots of positives for the Lions. Despite showing his inexperience, Jennings threw the ball all over the field and bought time with his feet, opening up lots of room for the B.C. passing game for the first time since early in the season. There were lots of missed opportunities. He overthrew at least two post patterns to Hawkins behind coverage but he has the arm strength and pocket presence to keep defences off guard, and the Lions racked up over 300 yards passing for the first time in a long time and outgained Calgary's offence overall, 377 yards to 314.

Andrew Harris had a breakout game rushing. His 58 yards on 12 carries doesn't sound like a lot but he picked up some healthy gains on first down and converted a number of second-down opportunities when needed, while outrushing Jon Cornish.

Defensively, I mentioned in the game thread that Minter and McFarland were doing a great job on Cornish, plugging gaps and not giving him any room between the tackles. Cornish finished with 12 carries for 41 yards (a 3.5-yard average), with most of his yards coming off tackle.

Last but not least, Chris Rainey gave the Lions the majority of their points for the second straight game with 333 return yards, including a 103-yard punt return TD and a matching 103-yard kickoff return TD. In 50-plus years of watching the Lions, I don't recall ever seeing two B.C. return TDs in one game. He gives the Lions a chance every game and he gave the whole team a much-needed spark. It was an interesting game to watch, despite the loss.

A successful game, despite the loss. A leader emerges, making mistakes, sure, but LEADING. The team wants to play for him! Perhaps it is the "end of the beginning."

So nice to see some spirit wearing Orange.

Nice game Lions.

Yes... leadership came in the form of Jennings.

You can't credit Tedford for the excitement tonight other than unleashing Rainey but the real stuff emerged with Jennings - that change was DUE only to injury. HC said Jennings would get a series. Wally said he'd actually get some play.

Gore at the bottom.

-- Guy on the radio dampens the spirit. NO Offensive TDs.. but they went in the right direction.

Bring in Courtenay Taylor, drop Gore as he's just not in the space to play it seems.

Manny ONLY got fired up AFTER the change in QB and the ball was coming to him. Other than that he'd have been the same old 'all about me' Manny no show. You need a receiving corps that's all about playing every down. BUT I will say it would take a lot of effort to hang in with the way the Lions QBs were until JJ got a shot.

One other thing, listening to the post-game, they're laughing and having a good time. Christ...we are paying for season tickets, it's not a laughing matter, IMO

Wow Hufnagel's recorded post game short talk to his team was the way a HC has to focus and that is on the few key lessons each game (win or lose) gives a team. That is always missing from Jeff Tedford's talks.

Hufnagel said something like 'I dont want to rain on your party but that's not good enough' . Liked their effort but....

All short and sweet and that is all a top HC does post game. No long speech but let the team know they all need to learn the lesson. Puts guys on notice that the performance orientation is still in place even though they won.

A few post game callers like the excitement but don't like no TDs from the offence.

Jennings made George Cortez look like a play-calling genius with the way he used his arms and feet. That's the way a QB is supposed to attack defences (minus the turnovers). Jennings opened up the offence because he used the whole offence and didn't let Calgary key on Harris or the short passing game.

The great news for STs - is no penalties on the returns for TDs. They just let the guy make the play. All teams should do the same as penalties aren't worth the risk. Ask Hamilton's returner.

35 -23 is nothing to holding a parade about but if they keep exciting fans and themselves - they'll get wins.

Tim Brown's replacement unfortunately had one great return but other than that was no threat to Brown's job.

Still the Lions DBs have to learn when to go for a ball vs sit back.

Some good news on the post game. Lions are thinking of moving Craig Roh to his natural position defensive end in place of Khreem Smith. First he has to lose some weight.

It's a start, and for the first time this season its a start in the right direction. As BCFAN said, with a number of injuries to deal with and a 3rd string QB with no experience, we were banging on their door to start the 4th Quarter while losing the turnover battle 6-1. We finally have a couple of DTs that can play, which is helping our LB core to excel. Fraser has been a great addition in the secondary. Why did we wait so long to address these key areas? I still absolutely HATE the style of defence that we play, but at least they are still competing out there. Its just that part of a defence's mandate is to create turnovers, we just don't do that.

Offensively, for the first time in a long time our Offence seemed energized and into the game and that came through Jennings. As I said during the week, nice guy or not, John Beck was NEVER going to be the answer in Vancouver, the simple decision to give Jennings some playing time helped to have him better prepared mentally and it showed. He possesses a lot strong qualities for a QB, so let's hope the offence can rally around him and build off of the energy generated tonight.

STs have benefited greatly from Tedford's involvement, but still WAY TOO MANY penalties and inconsistency...many times those units are simply not prepared to go on the field. IMO Chuck McMann is perhaps the worst coach at his position in the CFL. Now, if Tedford can get involved in S Ts and generate a positive result, why he won't take a more active interaction with both the offence and defence is beyond me. Cortez is still struggling and needs help and guidance right now, and Washington has to become more aggressive and that's the HC's job to make it happen. The turnover battle tonight was lost badly, if the Lions can turn that around, they can win football games with Jenning at QB, but they won't win a single one if this many turnovers continue. As I said it was a step in the right direction with Jennings at QB, lets see how they react in EDM next week.
