Game Blog.

Q1

Glenn is a very good pro. Emotions under control despite the intensity of the occasion. He looks relaxed, focused and ready to play against the team that, in effect, dumped him for Burris.

Westerman with the start.

Ott. Henry wide open in the flats. Wasted TO for Ott.

Solo tackle. All right. Good pressure, blitz, dropped pass.

BC. Nice pass n catch Glenn EJ. Injured hand. Ouch.

Beck pass. Near pickoff, but it works. He looks OK so far.

Nice pass n catch JB to Kito. We have come out firing. Amazing.

Drop by Keola, but the good news ... JB looks good. No deer in the headlights tonight. PMc 3-0.

Ott. Not sure why we played off the line on 2nd and 2. Our left flat is wide open again. Burris to Henry, nice. Hard to believe Carter our Rd 1 pick. Fast? OK. Can he catch?

BC. KG to Rolly. Yee Haw. Antolin nice run. Nice hole.

Fast quarter.

Ott. Finch big hole. Nice cuts. Pass. Slicing us up. Bazzie stops possible big gainer. Both Os showing life. Dropped TD pass. Whoa ... Gonna be a good game, looks like. Penalty on BC. D'oh ...
........................................

Q2

BC. Benny in Mark W's grill. See, I'm in charge. Antolin nice run. Haidara catch, too bad, holding.

Ott. Run. Tkl by Solo. Nice run. Ott no pushover. Another near TD pass. Nice blitz, sack.

BC. Keola good run. Valli hurt. Home record in great decline. PI. EJ sweep. Nice catch, run Keola. Great run. Great blocking. Nice catch run Brown. PI. TD nice short yardage play. 10-0.

Lions playing well. Backs against the wall has given good focus.

Ott. Burris near misses need to hit. Henry hits one. I like Menard. Nice knock down. 3-10.

Seems like a super fast game.

BC. Bad sub. D'oh. Keola beauty. Nice try KG to SG. KG to EJ, beauty. 17-3.

We are playing very, very well. Benny posturing after the TD.

Ott. Two, out.

BC. EJ. Keola. Kito. We are dialed in. Backs against the wall. KG 200, revenge vs the RBs. Arakgi shows some speed.

Ott. Tkl by Solo.

17-3 at the half. KG getting some revenge vs Ott.
................................

Q 3

BC. EJ nice. SG nice. SG, KG slicing and dicing. Tuinei times two. Good short yardage. Tuinei TD, excellent.

Now all that whining about injuries. Nonsense. Excuses made, and not needed. 24-3.

Ott. Two out.

BC. Keola. EJ, sudden star. Tuinei and EJ loving the waggle in the CFL. FG 27-3.

Nice D by BC. But we did dodge some bullets.

Ott. Phillips misses a duck. Mark W bringing somw heat tonight. Nice pressure by Solo.

BC. Nice run by Keols. Nice blocking. Amazing catch by EJ.

....................................

Q 4

BC. Antolin productive run. Roughing the K? Huge run by Keola, with awesome open field block by Jovon. Keola TD. 34-3. Rolly takes out two.

Fun game for the Lions.

Ott. Two, out.

BC. KG 345 yards. He is a pro. Antolin beauty. EJ. KA so small can't tell if he is down. Ha ha. Game has slowed down.

Now our receiving corps looks pretty good. EJ, Tuinei, Gore. Injured Burnham, Manny, Courtney on the sideline.

Ott. Two, out, bad snap.

BC. Tuinei, draws PI. Great debut. Nice short yardage. TD. 41-3.
...........................

As noted, our backs were against the wall. The professionalism of the players, with some good game planning showed. Our talent showed. The coaches deserve credit.

B.C.'s large receivers, especially EJ and Tuinei, were just too much for the smallish Ottawa DBs in MTM coverage.

There was what has become our usual very effective defence. But Ottawa did come within a whisker of completing some very long passing plays, even potential TDs.

We saw a huge explosion of offence, both passing and running. One asks: Where has this been all year? And we did this with backups, even though there was much attention focused by Wally, the media, and others on the team's "dire" injury situation. Our O Line seemed to have little or no trouble in pass protection. We seemed to be able to make great, aggressive contact on running plays. Where has this been all year?

I think we have to give credit to Joe PaoPao for having his young receiver corps in great mental readiness to play at a high level. And Kevin Glenn was the guy who has passed for all those yards and TDs in his rather remarkable career. Perhaps playing against the team that disrespected him, in putting Burris ahead of him, had KG in fine form.

We will take the win, and the performance of the year. But does this mean we are going to steamroll through the rest of our schedule? Who knows? But it does show what our talent is capable of, even with backups, even though it was against the weak expansion RedBlacks. Can we expect any more whining about inujuries before our next game? I don't think so.

As always, nice to see the opposing players mingling after the game.

Terrific game plan once again by Mark W. And by Khari Jones, with huge help from the highly motivated Kevin Glenn.

I still don't know if Paopao at field level tonight was a first. I normally recall seeing him in the booth and only Jones at field level. I think the cones at practice had an impact and I am now suspecting even some coaches got a fire lit by the GM.

I thought that receiving group tonight had its best outing and they seem focused without the usual celebrations and hot dogging we get when the Lions REC catch a ball and they are losing.

REC corps:
1. ran better routes/ turned up as a visible unit
2. fought for balls/positioned themselves better
3. seemed focused and into it - no celebratory crap we've seen all year that seem unjustified in games when they were just catches not TDs.

Was Paopao at field level for a reason?

all I know about paopao tonight is that it was night seeing him there on the sidelines. he will always be a sentimental favorite and I have no doubt his being there made a difference.

My impressions on tonights game. The last few weeks I have been very critical of the Lions offence. Deservedly so but I will be critical or positive depending on the performance. Tonight I will give praise where it is due. Only a few criticisms and a lot to feel good about. First good job by the O Line. Glenn appeared to have time and some good holes for the running game. A lot of big receivers in the offence getting a chance to perform. Tuinei at 6'5, Jackson had a great game, and Shawn Gore. With Adekolu who wasn't that noticeable tonight but a lot of big receivers who present a big target. Great game by Glenn who was very accurate and took some tough hits. Again the D was awesome. Great job by Antolin who made some great runs. It shows the quality of a lot of the guys who are waiting in the wings to get their chance to play. The only things that bothered me the whole game was when Beck came in. Tuinei had a step on the DB and the ball is thrown four yards short which almost resulted in an interception. Then he had Antolin five yards up the middle running right and he would have walked in for a TD. Beck lobs a duck behind Antolin's left shoulder that goes incomplete. I would way rather see Partridge come in. The only other play that bothered me was when the special teams got flagged for too many men. Good job overall tonight. Nice job by Jackson, Tuinei, Glenn and the D. Good job boys !

10 random post-game thoughts:

1. Finally an entertaining game that didn't have me falling asleep or banging my head against the wall.

2. Best game of the year for the offensive line. They gave Glenn plenty of time and a large pocket. Good blocking to give Antolin some holes. Not playing Calgary or Sask caliber of Defence, but give credit when it is due.

3. Glenn looked like the QB we have seen in the past. Probably due to a combination of the aforementioned O-Line play, play calling and receivers who made some catches instead of dropping balls.

4. Much better play calling by Khari Jones. I liked the quick hitters and actually going down field early. Opens up your options if the DB's actually have to think that you may sling it down field now and again.

5. Great game by Ernest Jackson. As I mentioned in the game thread, Jackson is an enigma to me. At 6'2 with speed he should be a fixture in our offence. Every so often he has a great game and then fades off to the sidelines. I hope this game is the start of something down the stretch. A receiving trio of Jackson, Arceneaux and possibly Tuinei give speed and size that could give DB's fits.

6. If the Lions marketing staff don't build an entire marketing scheme around Solomon Elimimian, they should be gassed. What a great player to watch. He alone is worth the price of admission. If every player on the Lions played like Sol E every play, the Lions would be winning cups for years.

7. Still tired of seeing Benny's fist pump and chest bumps. Just coach the team and leave the cheer-leading to the much more attractive ladies with the pom poms!!

8. Mark Washington has done a great job in his first year as DC. He will get even better as he gets more experience. Three games without allowing a offensive TD??!! That is incredible. They say defence wins championships so hopefully we can get our offence going consistently to go with that dominant defence and we may have a chance in the playoffs.

9. The crowd seemed into it tonight and the stadium came off looking good on the TV tonight. I don't know if it was redemption night from Skulsky's brainfart marketing scheme, but a crowd of 31K on a Saturday night when the Canucks had their opener across the street is impressive. i was expecting barely over 20,000. Finally, the fans got an entertaining night of football.

10. Here's hoping that the Riders lay a big turkey on Thanksgiving in Montreal!

Great win, but I hold it with a grain of salt. We beat up on an atrocious Ottawa team. Manhandling them is a lot different then playing any other team.

Yes, it was cool seeing the Lions field a working offence TONIGHT........

Even when Glenn was off, the crowd is excited. I know Glenn's stats are good on things like 2nd down conversions but I've sat through a lot of boring football by this offence, tonight was an exception.

Still, frustrating to see puzzlement/indecision (two seperate occassions, both after big plays by the Lions, IIRC). You have to call timeout inside the five? Not saying he shouldn't have done it, saying his coaches should have had him ready.

Really enjoyed watching our feisty defence play tonight too. THe offence will get lots of kudos tonight due to putting up points.

IIRC, the replay is on at MIDNIGHT, on one of the TSN channels so I am going to stay up and watch it again...... Its been too long seeing the Lions offence play....

One other thing. Why were the Redblacks playing in their home UNIS? IIRC, their road unis are white, not that it matters, just curious.......

For as long as the challenge system has been in use, I think tonight was the first time I'd ever noticed a team granted a challenge with no timeouts left. Turns out if your timeouts are all gone before you've made any challenges, you still get to have one challenge (subject to the usual rules of what constitutes a valid challenge, one would suppose).
2013 Rule Book, RULE 1 – CONDUCT OF THE GAME, SECTION 7 – STARTING & TIMING, Article 6 – Instant Replay Review wrote:If both team time outs have been used prior to any challenges, a team will continue to have the opportunity for one challenge.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

I noticed right away that Paopao was on the sidelines and Lulay was in the spotter's booth. I had been complaining about the seemingly lack production out of the spotter's booth as in little or no in game or half time adjustments in previous games. However TSN announcers seemed to think receivers coach Paopao was on the sidelines to coach up the young receiving core. This is probably correct and i hope the Lions stay with this set up.

Beck looked more comfortable but almost got picked in the end zone. The receiver, Tuinei I think, probably prevented an int. He looked very comfortable out there and very big. A healthy Manny, Jackson, Tuinei and Gore might just scare some Ds.

Glenn moving around in the pocket and having time to go deep. GO DEEP. GO DEEP.

The Orange Ant, Antolin looked very very good. 157 yards good behind some excellent blocking. Antolin will challenge Logan for a starting job 2015.

The O line had their best game of the year and seemed to be getting on the man they need to block more quickly than in the past. Maybe it was just more determination to dominate the D line.

Gore's one yard TD run was a great call. Redblacks were expecting a QB sneak up the middle but Gore got the ball and in behind RT Olafioye. Solid game from Gore.

Statement game by Jackson. 195 yards is the best WR/SB production in a single game in the CFL this season. Front runner for O player of the week. Oh, and the statement to the coaches from Jackson : "Don't even think about making me a healthy scratch ever again, NEVER EVER".

After the long throw in the second half that was too far for Gore, I thought still worth trying, still stretches the D even when it goes incomplete. Then the next play was a short pass to Antolin that went for a big gain, followed by another long bomb to Jackson for a TD and the Ottawa D was reeling. Very good play calling and mixing things up with a pass to Lumbala for a 1st down. I really liked Tim Brown's great yac move after a catch that earned a first down.

It seemed that Lions players stepped up and made plays all night.

With this D and some improved production on O, this is a team that could do some damage in the playoffs. They need to beat the Bombers after the bye week to get into the playoffs, I think.

I am a long-time reader, first-time poster, and life-long Vancouverite (I'll save it for the introductions thread) .

Great atmosphere at the game tonight with 31,000 fans in attendance. An entertaining and decisive win has motivated me to "surface" on these boards. I realize this is against Ottawa (and that there were many redeemed "free tickets" for this game given local curiosity) but a fine night for Fall Football at BC Place.

The offense shows up for a home game! Obviously we are suffering more injuries than most would have forecasted at this point but the replacements were solid tonight. Earnest Jackson especially... And Glenn is not ideal but is the best we have for now and is an honest QB, he needs better protection and receivers... Still not the final answer mind you...

Regards to all who regularly post on these boards for your knowledgeable insights into BC LIONS football that I have quietly appreciated over the last few seasons...

ROAR!
