TEAM 1040 radio is about to lose one of its top broadcasters, The Province has learned.

According to sources, Rick Ball — who does play-by-play for the sports radio station’s B.C. Lions and Vancouver Canucks broadcasts — will be leaving Vancouver to take on a similar position with Rogers Sportsnet in Calgary, where he’ll call the Flames TV games in the coming season.

Ball’s departure, which is expected to be officially announced this week, will leave big shoes to fill at TEAM 1040.

TEAM 1040 program director Mike Whittingham didn’t return a call from The Province on Monday afternoon, requesting confirmation of the development.

Ball, who has been at TEAM 1040 for 11 years, has also been a part of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast team. Earlier in his broadcast career, Ball called games for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets.

Except he already does the sideline reporting for TSN, can't do both gigs.

They usually get former players to take on the roll of colour commentator, but I think Angus Reid, who never saw a microphone that he didn't like, should apply for the job.

Tom Larscheid too but I think he's burned his bridges with the Lions.

The signing of Rick Ball to do the Calgary Flames games on Sportsnet is a tremendous upgrade, no matter who they get to do colour!!
Last year's SN TV duo of Rob Kerr (play-by-play) and Charlie Simmer (colour) was in a word.. "horrific"!!
Welcum to "Cowtown" Rick.. hope they find you a decent colour guy!!
Cheers!

Rick Ball will be a big loss in BC.

I like his calls. His candour, etc.

I like Farhan when he called a CFL game once as a fill in but I also like his sideline reporting and other TSN stuff.

i agree that farhan is a good choice. high football IQ. plus he already works in the TSN empire.

TSN can get perry or one of the local ctv people to be the sideline guy for tsn.

TSN doesn't do the local Lions radio broadcasts so TSN is a problem not a solution.
