Good for Norman. He worked hard, progressed well through his first season as a starting centre and should come out much further ahead this year. The Lions seem to be confident that he is the true heir to the centre position. I hope his tenure is as long as that of Angus Reid, Jamie Taras and others who have held the position.

The centre position has been a luxury for the Lions in the past alright. I also hope that longevity tourch has been passed on to Norman now.

Great move! I would like to see the Lions draft a CIS Centre in the first round, the SFU kid, and move Norman back to Guard though. He's a better player at guard than he is at centre...at least to this point.

Good on him. Happy things are working out, and that he doesn't have to brush that teaching certificate off right away.

Hmm...is the longer term contract the new Lions template? I thought due to the CBA both sides maybe reluctant to set things too far into the future...

Glad to see Norman inked for the long term, personally.

VANCOUVER -- The BC Lions announced this morning that Canadian centre Matt Norman has signed a contract extension through the 2016 season.

Norman originally joined the Lions as the club’s third-round selection (22nd overall) in the 2012 CFL Draft. The Western University grad enters his third season this June after solidifying his spot as the team’s starting centre last year.

Reid announces retirement

“Matt has shown tremendous progress and maturity in his first two seasons playing one of the most important positions on the field,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “His extension along with our recent signing of Hunter Steward and the return of Kirby Fabien means that the future of our offensive line is in good hands and it’s along the line of scrimmage where championships are won.”

Departing midway through his rookie season in 2012 to conclude his post-secondary studies, Norman returned to the Leos roster in time for the Western Final that year and enjoyed a remarkable 18-game regular season in 2013 filling in for veteran Angus Reid at centre.

“Matt has responded incredibly well in some very high-pressure situations,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “The centre position is extremely important and knowing we’ll have continuity there is crucial to our success on offence.”

Norman, a native of Chateauguay, Quebec has appeared in 27 regular season games along with two playoff games.

Big Guy.

Very calm.

Smart.

A Godsend in round three.

With Norman, Fabien and Steward we are transforming our NI O Line roster.

And we did pretty well after changing our blocking scheme mid season last year, with Valli and Kabongo in there.

Promising. Many issues remain however.

No need to panic over lack of free agent signings.

Only if Fabien comes back 100%...if not, big concerns.
