Grey Cup Day

Just about to conk out for the night. Takes a look at Lionbackers. Oh yeah. Grey Cup later on today ...

I like both teams actually. I think highly of Trestman and Calvillo. I like Miller. I think Durant is a CFL quarterback prototype.

I like Etcheverry's quirky, tricky defence, even though it has its vulnerabilities.

Should be an awesome game.

Will it be another barnburner? Only time can tell!

Aside from last seasons Roughrider meltdown look for the green riders, having had the switch to kill been flicked on by our very own Leos in the semi-final as I predicted, out to avenge their own folly a year ago in a rematch of last seasons GC today.

For Montreal fans this will make it number seven if they can pull the trigger again today.

I know this will certainly not endear me to lionbacker.com members, but my heart is always in the west as it was last season (“evil empire” excluded), so I will predict a 32-28 Saskatchewan win today bringing their total GC wins to four, and pushing at our own envelope.

This is in no way an endorsement of their melon-headed fans, who are by rights amongst the worst when it comes to class in the CFL.

There are two large opposing motives going into this game.

The Riders have redemption on their minds, a chance to make amends for last years Grey Cup loss that seemingly was given away.

The Als also have a demon to rid, the concept that the Riders gave the Grey Cup away with a penalty. Win today and they can put all that 13th man losing the GC behind them as well.

All the talk has been about the 13th man, TSN plays up the commercials with it, Rider Nation is given a Gibson award, and now the Riders all claim to be the 13th man on the field. What is missing is the Als attempt for a second straight GC, which hasn't been done since the mid 90's by the Argos. Cahoon playing his last CFL game is also a strong motivator for Calvillo, he will want to see his ace receiver go out on top. On the flipside, Morgan was a Rider through the tough seasons, left for the Esks when the Riders did win the GC, only to come back and take the 09 loss.

Going to be a good one by all accounts, both teams will be hard pressed to perform better than the opening game of 2010 between the two sides. If they even come close, it will be great for the CFL.

The Als also seem to be considerably chafed by the perceived preferential treatment of the Riders by the league - the better hotel, the state-of-the-art locker room compared to their cramped quarters, and the curious timing of a special league award honouring Rider fans. That's going to be the motivational force for the Alouettes, and while Trestman won't publicly acknowledge it, I am quite sure he will remind his team of their "2nd class" status.

An article by Matthew Sekeres ...
Montreal Alouettes

1. Stay loose. No matter how dominant they are in the regular season, quarterback Anthony Calvillo and the Alouettes’ offence always seem to play tight on the biggest stage.

2. Man up. On a chilly Alberta evening, against a team that practises in blizzards and is known for its resiliency, Montreal is going to have to match Saskatchewan’s heartiness.

3. Avon Cobourne. The most outstanding player from the 2009 Grey Cup game could make all the difference if he gets Montreal’s ground game in gear.

4. Chip Cox. The outside linebacker has a nose for the ball (two interceptions against Saskatchewan this year), and his ability to blitz with speed and stealth could really disrupt the Riders’ offence.
They got dayum lucky last year. Someone unnamed on the Riders screwed up. Otherwise the Alouettes would be feeling the tightness of all those missed Grey Cup opportunities piling up.
Saskatchewan Roughriders

1. Green energy. It is bound to be another home game for the Riders, and the Sea of Green could certainly help disrupt Montreal’s offence.

2. Weston Dressler. The Riders’ receiver owned Montreal defensive backs in two games this year (22 catches, 323 yards, three touchdowns) and will either be a primary target or one heck of a decoy.

3. Darian Durant. The Riders’ quarterback also got fat on the Alouettes in 2010 (926 passing yards, seven touchdowns), and seems to be able to read Montreal’s defences better than most opponents.

4. Special teams. The Alouettes are clearly better in this area, so it is incumbent on kicker Warren Kean, punter Eddie Johnson and return specialist Ryan Grice-Mullen not to make the big mistake.
Would you bet the farm on RGM? Ha ha ... It will be interesting. Even a butter-fingered guy like RGM can make some plays though.

Durant and Dressler. Do you suppose they can make some plays? Uhhh, yeah.

Wow...the Rider fans made it easy for me to pick who I'm going for. Why would anyone in this country think having frogs on nooses would be funny?
I'll get a stuffed pig on the end of a noose and call that my tribute to Rider fans.

Go Als. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

It’s been a long week here in Edmonton, at the end of a long season, and we’ve gotten to the point where even Marc Trestman gets asked the legacy question, too. He’s been Montreal’s coach for three years now, and is hours from coaching in his third consecutive Grey Cup, and he was asked about what it would mean, were his team to win. Trestman, however, was congenitally incapable of taking the bait.

“I honestly don’t look at it, and I’ve never spent time thinking about that we’re here for the third straight year,” Trestman said. “I know that’s hard to believe, but it really is not part of my consciousness. It really isn’t. I mean, the past is so far gone, and really most of the season is now dissolved and we’re just focused in on this week.

“So I know I say it, but I really don’t think about how many games we’ve won, where we’ve been, or even where we’re going. I really don’t spend any time thinking about that. I’m just thinking about the beauty of the moment, and appreciating being able to go along for the ride with you guys, with our team, and being a part of this league.”

The beauty of the moment. Trestman is no poet, and in truth is generally predisposed to only the most utilitarian of public prose. But that was as good a description of football, and the component parts of what makes football, as anything else. Teams spend a year planning, thinking, building, rearranging, working, hoping. They spend a year breaking this violent and complicated game into its component parts and building it back up again.

Some Rider Quotes from their fan forum...
Anthony Calvillo sold poisoned milk to school children
Harvested from rats he got from Fat Tony.
I think I can work up just enough hate to keep my edge!
I think that Chipy Coxucker lives up to his name.
THAT BASTAGE! I hate that guy! I hope he breaks his leg!
I guess I should add that you don't have to be a Rider Fan to attend. Trolls that support inferior teams are also welcome.
Now I know all Rider fans aren't like this...but sometimes I wonder weather you're teaching all your children to become like this. And yes I have checked out the Als message board and there is nothing like this hate on at all.

The only negatives came from a Rider fan Trolling the Als sight.
I just want a fun game...OK?
Go Montreal

Well I have nothing against the Riders personally, and sometimes think the bile spilled here on Riders fans is a bit over the top. And I'm neutral today (will see who my wife wants to win and then choose the other side).

However, I've just been checking out the forum at riderfans.com, and the arrogance and general buttheadedness is rather astounding. It's always there but this week they've pulled out all the stops and taken it to a new level.

And over at the Als forum (goalsgo.com) there's lots of reasoned thinking - including a certain level of dismay at the whining by a couple of players about their treatment in Edmonton - but no game day thread!

AC and AC.

Good start for Calvillo and Cobourne.

Bad for Riders.
