Damon has received mixed reviews from CFL fans throughout his career , but you have to admire his longevity throughout the years.
Happy retirement, Damon.

No surprise, but why wait until TC to announce it?

One of the CFL's All-Time best. Congrats on a great career Damon, and thank you for 2000.

Are you aware that in Damon Allen's career, his second-highest passing season was in 2000 when he had 4,840 yards. That was his highest season before he won his 2004 MOP season.
For some reason, the 2000 championship is by far the most unpopular one and along with that, goes the starting QB for the Grey Cup win. And it seems like I've been the only who mentioned that the 1996 season was a blessing in disguise when, after starting QB Andre Ware was ineffective, Damon Allen must have been one of the best free agent signings ever.

Well, Damon was always good for at least 3-4 delay of game penalties.....so this seems only fitting.ziggy wrote:A couple of years too late in my opinion. He should have gone earlier.

I'd love you to say it to my face because you'd only say it once...if you ever had the courage to say it at all!! Blitz, 05/24/2008
lol... So will he get flagged for delay of retirement at his pressser today?West Coast Blue Fan wrote:Well, Damon was always good for at least 3-4 delay of game penalties.....so this seems only fitting.ziggy wrote:A couple of years too late in my opinion. He should have gone earlier.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
Damon Allen played for six different teams in his long 23-year career. In 10, 20, 30 years from now, which team would you associate him with? I have a feeling that most people would remember him either as an Eskimo given the fact that he won his first Grey Cup (as well as his second), or as an Argonaut given the fact that he won his final Grey Cup as well as his first Most Outstanding Player with Toronto.
However, if you take a look at his various statistics many of them were #1 or at least #2 while he was a BC Lion. In some cases, I'm ranking him as a BC Lion compared to his five other teams. In other cases, I'm ranking him as a BC Lion comparing to other BC Lions. You can see that many #1 or #2 statistic occurred when he was a BC Lion.

I picture him in a Memphis Mad Dog uniform.
Great job, Robbie. Maybe Damon can be persuaded to come back for a half dozen games to break Roy Dewalt's record for number of games as a Lion.Robbie wrote:Damon Allen played for a six different teams in his long 23-year career. Who would ever imagined that a pro QB could play as long and as well as Damon Allen has? Today will be a day when many will say we shall not see his like again and it is very likely true.
When you consider what kind of passion it takes to strap on the pads and play at a pro level into your 40s and at a position where you take some big hits, Damon has had an incredible career!!! Many players retire when they have more in the tank from a fan's point of view as they either lose the passion to sacrifice and compete at that level or they have had a career ending injury or outside career opportunities or family considerations make another career more appealing. Here is a guy who has had injuries (luckily none to the head) that would have caused most to suggest that it is time to quit and he has come back from that to win Outstanding Player and a Grey Cup.
The name Wayne Gretzky comes to mind when you consider a great athlete who also played great but managed to avoid those big career ending blows.
The CFL and Canadian football and fans are better for what he has contributed for so long to this league and each of the teams he has QB'ed.
I wish him as much success in whatever he does now as he had on the field.

When I want to reflect positively on DA, this will be a play/game that will come to mind first. The Lions were down and and out one play prior to this, not only did we snuff out the game winning drive that the Als had in their hip pocket, then DA to AJ and the entire 17K (although it was more like 15K in attendance) celebrated, CFL at its best.Longest Pass Completion

As for Damon Allen the athlete, there isn't one QB in the entire time that I have watched the CFL that has been more gifted all around. Still Doug Flutie had that extra intangible/desire that took him a step and a throw above DA, Lions were lucky to have both in uniform.
